EPA Strengthens Protections for human studies with pesticides.

February 18, 2013

Lisa P. Jackson signed amendments strengthening existing standards for human research involving pesticides submitted by third parties for consideration in EPA decision-making. Amendments broaden scope and applicability of EPA 2006 rule, strengthening standards for research considered in EPA decisions; clarifying approach used in EPA's science and ethics reviews of human research involving pesticides; and disallowing participation in testing by subjects who cannot consent for themselves. NREL, Partners demonstrate quantum dots that assemble themselves.

February 18, 2013

Scientists from U.S. Department of Energy's NREL and other labs have demonstrated process whereby quantum dots can self-assemble at optimal locations in nanowires. Several practical applications are possible, and fact that stable quantum dots can be placed very close to surface of nanometers raises potential for use in detecting local electric and magnetic fields. Also, quantum dots could be used to charge converters for better light-harvesting as with photovoltaic cells. Read More

Automate 2013 reaches record number of attendees.

February 15, 2013

Automate 2013 was attended by record 10,975 people across U.S. and 55 countries. Total exhibitors were up 17%, while show attendees and conference participants were up 62% and 10%, respectively. More than 75 industry experts gave presentations, including keynote speakers Steve Forbes and Henrik Christensen. According to post-show survey, Automate is becoming primary trade show in the field for many people, as about 50% of Automate attendees do not attend any other automation-related trade show. Gold Mining Companies must correct reporting violations.

U.S. EPA settled with 3 gold mining companies, all subsidiaries of Barrick Gold Corporation, for failing to correctly report toxic chemical releases and waste management activities as required by Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA). Barrick Cortez, Inc.; Barrick Gold US, Inc.; and Homestake Mining Company will pay $278,000 total in penalties and spend additional $340,000 to conduct environmentally beneficial project as well as audit/correct TRI reports for 2005–2011. ASTM Standard addresses piping systems using recycled resins.

ASTM WK39632, Specification for 3–24 Inch Corrugated Polyethylene Pipe and Fittings with Recycled Resins, will provide assurance regarding quality of HDPE corrugated pipe using recycled resins. Proposed standard includes requirements and test methods for materials, workmanship, dimensions, perforations, and pipe stiffness. Once approved, standard will be used by manufacturers to produce pipes made from recycled materials for end users such as excavation/drainage contractors and farmers. Read More

NREL Director and Experts say USA can double energy productivity.

On Feb. 7, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Director Dan Arvizu and panel of 20 energy experts declared USA can double its energy productivity by 2030 in ways that also bolster national economy. Arvizu and other members of Alliance to Save Energy (ASE) Commission on National Energy Efficiency Policy said doubling energy productivity could create one million new jobs while saving average household $1,000 per year and reducing CO2 emissions by one-third.
