Portland, Oregon Flights to be cleaner and greener.

According to FAA, pilots will start using NextGen technology and procedures that will enable aircraft to fly more efficient, environmentally friendly flights into Portland International Airport beginning next year. NextGen program uses RNAV approach procedures, which enable aircraft to fly safely on any desired flight path within coverage of ground- or space-based navigation aids. Aircraft approaching Portland can now power back sooner, saving fuel, making less noise, and emitting fewer pollutants. Read More

NTSB recommends ignition interlocks for DWI offenders.

December 13, 2012

In its study on wrong-way driving crashes, NTSB cited alcohol-impaired driving as the leading cause of these collisions and recommended that all first-offender alcohol-impaired drivers be required to have ignition interlocks installed on their vehicles. NTSB also endorsed continued development of a passive alcohol-detection technology, which would prevent alcohol-impaired individuals from operating vehicles by detecting alcohol in driver’s system through breath- and touch-based sensors. ASTM approves specification for constant air inflatable devices.

December 13, 2012

ASTM International Committee F15 on Consumer Products has approved ASTM F2729, Consumer Safety Specification for Constant Air Inflatable Play Devices for Home Use, which covers devices intended for use by children ages 2-12. In addition to detailed general requirements, standard covers areas such as calibration, marking/labeling, and instructional literature. It also suggests that products include a label identifying conformance to ASTM F2729. Transatlantic Roundtable focuses on electric vehicle standards.

Cooperation on eMobility standardization was the focus of discussion during Transatlantic Roundtable organized by European Committee for Standardization, European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization, and ANSI, which took place in Brussels on November 28-29. Discussions concentrated on 4 key areas of electric vehicle standardization: coupler safety and interoperability; vehicle-to-grid communications; wireless charging; and safety of electric vehicle infrastructure and batteries. IEEC praises legislation's focus on industrial efficiency.

Industrial Energy Efficiency Coalition praised House passage of H.R. 6582, the American Energy Manufacturing Technical Corrections Act. Bill directs Department of Energy to establish collaborative research and development partnerships with other programs to support use of innovative manufacturing processes and to support applied research for development, demonstration, and commercialization of new technologies and processes to improve industrial efficiency. Equipment Finance Sector to surpass $740 billion in 2013.

According to U.S. Equipment Finance Market Study 2012–2013, U.S. businesses and government agencies will finance over $742 billion in equipment acquisitions in 2013. Study indicates equipment finance sector emerged from Great Recession with finance volumes at all-time high, resulting from equipment investment growth and interest rate environment. ANSI and its Procedures and Standards Administration department wish to remind all ANSI-Accredited U.S. Technical Advisory Group administrators to ISO that Procedural Compliance Form issued via email and 2012 TAG Annual Reports must be submitted no later than January 31, 2013, to ANSI PSA department. Failure to submit these required documents by deadline may jeopardize organization’s status as an ANSI-Accredited U.S. TAG and TAG Administrator. Read More

On December 6 of 2012, Frans Vreeswijk, general secretary and CEO of IEC, noted increasing importance of standardization and conformity assessment in global marketplace. He also pointed out how standards still fail to appear on CEOs' radars. "Standards are a strategic instrument in competing for markets," he explained, "but leaders who do not have a technical background often fail to see how very critical standards and conformance are to their bottom line." NEMA publishes standard for uninsulated conductors.

NEMA published ANSI/NEMA WC 67-2012 Standard for Uninsulated Conductors Used in Electrical and Electronic Applications, which covers variety of conductor types, including single end and stranded, coated/uncoated copper, coated copper alloy, coated copper-clad steel, aluminum, and thermocouple extension conductors. These conductors are used primarily in insulated wires for aerospace, electrical, electronic, and other high performance applications.   Read More

U.S. EPA and Department of Energy (DOE) are releasing 2013 Fuel Economy Guide, providing consumers with clear, understandable information to help choose most fuel-efficient and low-greenhouse gas-emitting vehicles that meet their needs. While 2013 models include efficient and low-emission vehicles in various classes and sizes, this year is notable for growing availability of hybrids and increasing number of electric vehicles. 2012 Environmental Justice Small Grants announced by EPA.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced $1.2 million in competitive grants for 50 non-profit and tribal organizations working to address environmental justice issues nationwide. Grants foster research, education, and development of solutions to local health and environmental issues in low-income communities burdened by harmful pollution. ASTM announces formation of Committee F44 on General Aviation Aircraft, bringing together global stakeholders to work on a standards roadmap that will help transform the way smaller aircraft are manufactured and certified around the world. Formed in support of FAA's Part 23 ARC, Committee F44 will develop standards that address complexity and performance of general aviation aircraft, including design and construction, systems and performance, quality acceptance tests, and safety monitoring. NREL teams with Berkeley Lab to analyze solar pricing trends.

According to report titled, "Photovoltaic Pricing Trends: Historical, Recent, and Near-Term Projections," system prices in U.S. have been falling rapidly during past decade, and are likely to continue downward trend through 2012 and into 2013. Second report, "Benchmarking Non-Hardware Balance of System Costs for U.S. Photovoltaic Systems Using a Data-Driven Analysis from PV Installer Survey Results," shows total soft costs constituted 40-50% of residential and commercial PV prices in 2010. Coalition sends letter to Senate urging support of two bills.

Coalition for Derivatives End-Users sent letter to every U.S. Senator asking that they support two common sense, bipartisan pieces of legislation. S. 3480/H.R. 2682 would exempt nonfinancial end-users — who did not contribute to the financial crisis — from onerous, costly, and unnecessary margin requirements. H.R. 2779 would exempt purely internal, inter-affiliate derivatives trades from clearing and other requirements more appropriately applied to street-facing, speculative swaps. Read More

ASTM C1675, Practice for Installation of Precast Reinforced Concrete Monolithic Box Sections for Culverts, Storm Drains and Sewers, covers initial excavation procedures, foundation specifications, construction of a leveling course, placement and joining of box sections, and proper use of sidefill and overfill around structure. EPA Awards Grants to students developing sustainable technology.

U.S. EPA awarded grants to 45 college teams in phase I of its People, Prosperity, and the Planet (P3) annual student design competition. Each grant, totaling up to $15,000 per team for overall amount of $675,000, is applied to designing and developing sustainable technologies to help protect people’s health and environment while promoting economic development.
