Collaboration to organize eMobility Standards Symposium.

IEEE Standards Association is collaborating with DIN – the German Institute for Standardization, and SAE International in organizing new event to explore how standards are driving innovation in electric vehicles and charging infrastructure globally, lessons learned from field of electromobility standards implementation, and gaps where standards are needed to propel EV market to next stage of growth. SME Announces 2013 Executive Committee and Board of Directors.

As its 2013 president, Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) announced election of industry leader Dennis Bray, PhD, FSME. Bray and others comprising 2013 SME Executive Committee and Board of Directors were sworn in at SME's Awards and Installation Banquet on November 10, 2012, in Las Vegas, NV. Those elected to serve on 2013 SME Executive Committee also included Michael F. Molnar (President-Elect), Wayne F. Frost (VP), Dean L. Bartles (Secretary/Treasurer), and Sandra L. Bouckley. PM Advance, voluntary clean air program, helps communities continue to meet soot pollution standards, improve air quality, and protect public health. ASTM Standard focuses on digital thermometers.

ASTM E2877, Guide for Digital Contact Thermometers, provides variety of recommendations for the manufacture and selection of digital thermometers. Standard includes set of accuracy classes which pertain to temperature interval from -200 through 500°C, an interval important for many thermometry applications. In addition, ASTM E2877 describes 3 types of sensors used in digital thermometers: platinum resistance sensors, thermistors, and thermocouples. Read More

ASTM Standard reflects revisions in engine coolant technology.

January 22, 2013

ASTM D3321, Test Method for Use of the Refractometer for Field Test Determination of the Freezing Point of Aqueous Engine Coolants, has been revised to reflect advances in engine coolant technology used in modern engines. Standard is used to provide freeze point determination of ethylene glycol and propylene glycol based engine coolants based on correlation of refractive index and EG or PG concentration in water. Test helps prevent engine/cooling system damage under low ambient temperatures. Read More

RIA transfers Certified Fabric Specialist program to ARCS.

The Board of Directors of RIA has voted to transfer ownership and administration of its Certified Fabric Specialist certification program to the Association of Rug Care Specialists, effective January 21, 2013. CFS is the nation’s only certification program that focuses on the advanced technical study of fabrics and upholstery, with an emphasis on the history of various cleaning and repair techniques, and potential cleaning problems based on fabric’s origin and construction. NAM Names Chair of its Council of Manufacturing Associations.

American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) President and CEO Donna Harman has taken over as chair of NAM's Council of Manufacturing Associations (CMA) to serve one-year term. According to NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons, Harman "will provide outstanding leadership to the CMA's efforts to advance pro-growth policies." Timmons cited her career highlights, such as successful and skillfull navigation of complex policy issues in Washington as well as her record of effective issue advocacy. Read More

ANSI/HI 9.8–2012 Rotodynamic Pumps for Pump Intake Design enables designers, owners, and users to configure functional pumping facility designs and provides remedial measures for problem intakes. Flowchart serves as guide to use of standard and can be used to locate appropriate sections. In addition to rectangular, formed suction, unconfined, and trench-type intakes, standard covers circular pump stations, pump suction tanks, and circular plan wet pit for solids-bearing liquids. AAMA and WDMA release updated industry review and forecast.

January 21, 2013

AAMA and WDMA jointly released December 2012 update to 2011/2012 U.S. Industry Statistical Review and Forecast, which delivers timely information on window, door, and skylight market trends. New residential construction for 2012 is expected to show 23.9% improvement compared to 2011, and for nonresidential construction, total volume is expected to end at 4.5% increase for entry doors, and 5.2% increase for interior doors. Growth rate for residential skylights is expected to be 6.5% over 2011. Read More

ASTM Standard covers polyester composition floor tile.

ASTM F2982, Specification for Polyester Composition Floor Tile, covers a new type of resilient flooring tile product that is based on a polyester binder. Among requirements detailed in ASTM F2982 are materials and manufacture information, mechanical properties, and dimensions/permissible variations. Performance Requirements section covers deflection; dimensional stability; resistance to chemicals, heat, and light stability; and static load limit. Read More

ASTM Standard addresses safety of glass used in furniture.

ASTM F2813, Specification for Glass Used as a Horizontal Surface in Desks and Tables, aims to minimize furniture-related injuries. Developed by Subcommittee F15.42 on Furniture Safety, standard covers performance requirements and test methods to ensure relative safety of glass used in furniture as primary or secondary surface on tables. Henry Chamberlain of F15.42 says "ASTM F2813 will provide assurance...that glass tops of tables and desks will be made of a safety glass product." Read More

Toxics Release Inventory shows air pollutants still on decline.

January 21, 2013

According to EPA's annual Toxics Release Inventory report, total toxic air releases in 2011 declined 8% from 2010, mostly because of decreases in hazardous air pollutant emissions, even while total releases of toxic chemicals increased for second year in a row. Among HAPs showing decline were hydrochloric acid and mercury. Releases into surface water decreased 3% and releases to land increased 19% since 2010, with the latter due primarily to the metal mining sector. Read More

ASC pushes for bipartisan TSCA reform in new Congress.

With opening of 113th Congress, ASC again took its message of the need for a bipartisan solution to the reform of Toxic Substances Control Act to offices of Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and Kay Hagan (D-NC). In discussion, it was emphasized that complexity of TSCA will require that concerned parties find common ground in modernizing legislation and that TSCA reform legislation proposed in prior Congress did not address critical issues regarding chemical assessments or took a step backwards. Tracy Murrell To Serve as NTSB's Director of Marine Safety.

January 18, 2013

Tracy Murrell, former chief safety officer for Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., will begin her job as director of NTSB's Office of Marine Safety on January 22. NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman called Murrell "an accomplished leader with more than 20 years of experience in the maritime safety industry" and noted her "proven track record of achieving safety results." Murrell holds U.S. Coast Guard master's license and has worked for several shipping companies. Read More
