BIO Lauds Navy, USDA Leadership on advanced biofuel procurement.

BIO thanked Navy Secretary Ray Mabus and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack for announcing advanced biofuel procurement opportunities through Farm to Fleet program. BIO's Brent Erickson postulated that "The Navy’s leadership in procuring advanced biofuels will encourage rapid scale up of new technologies and construction of capacity." He went on to say that "The USDA can help to build the necessary supply chains of sustainable, renewable biomass supplies." BIO Expresses Gratitude for hearing on RFS.

BIO thanked Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works for holding hearing on Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) and EPA's proposed rule for 2014. BIO's Brent Erickson called attention to advanced biofuel companies' "billions of dollars" of investments in building industry from ground up and noted how EPA's proposed rule will strand those investments, inhibit further investment/development, and threaten existing and future jobs as well as efforts to commercialize other biotech R&D. Proposed Standard addresses vacuum cleaner air performance. .

ASTM WK14392, Test Method for Evaluating the Sustained Air Performance and Exhaust Emissions of Central Vacuum Cleaning Units, is being developed by Subcommittee F11.22 on Air Performance, part of Committee F11 on Vacuum Cleaners. Standard will test how vacuum performance will be affected after multiple vacuuming events over extended period of time. It will help identify areas in which manufacturers may be able to improve designs and provide sensible advertising claims based on industry test. Read More

SME announces 2014 Officers and Board of Directors.

Director of the federal Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office has been elected to lead SME as it continues its new strategic direction and brand position. Michael F. Molnar, FSME, CMfgE, PE, was sworn in as the 2014 president of the 81-year-old organization dedicated to advancing manufacturing and attracting future generations. ASTM Standard helps assure implantable medical device safety.

ASTM WK19883, Test Method for Conducting and Evaluating Galvanic Corrosion Tests of Medical Implant Devices, is being developed by Subcommittee F04.15 on Material Test Methods. Cardiovascular, orthopedic, neurovascular, and dental implants will be evaluated using this standard. Making sure these devices do not experience galvanic corrosion helps assure they are biocompatible and can function as intended in the human body without degrading or eliciting an unwanted response.
