Glen Albert Barton receives Subir Chowdhury medal.

Glen Albert Barton, retired chairman and CEO of Caterpillar Inc., has received 2012 SAE Subir Chowdhury Medal of Quality Leadership, which honors those in the mobility industry who bring forth innovation and broaden impact of quality in mobility engineering, design, and manufacturing. A graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia, Barton joined Caterpillar in 1961 and held numerous marketing and general management positions around the world. He retired in 2004 after 5 years as CEO. Read More

PACK EXPO International 2012 breaks multiple records.

PACK EXPO International 2012 took place in Chicago, IL from October 28–31 and covered more than 1.1 million net square feet, up 6% from 2010. Packaging and processing trade show also saw 1,965 exhibiting companies, 45,338 attendees, and 6,749 international attendees which were respectively up 7%, 3%, and over 53% from 2010 levels. This momentum continues, with exhibitors already planning their presence at PACK EXPO Las Vegas (September 23–25, 2013).

PMI President's Award has been presented to Craig Selover.

Craig Selover received President's Award at Plumbing Manufacturers International's (PMI) Fall Conference in Washington, D.C., which was held October 7–10, 2012. Given in recognition of lifetime achievement and outstanding contributions to plumbing industry, President's Award was established in 2009 by then PMI President Walt Strader. Selover, Masco Corporation's director of plumbing products technology, has been PMI member for 30+ years and served as president of organization in 1990. Read More

New Highway Projects boost Indian construction industry.

National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) awarded about 4,375 km of roads in first 9 months of 2012, which can be compared against 4,553 km during 2011, 3,338 km during 2010, and 643 km in 2009. Q3 of 2012 saw ~1,898 km of projects awarded. Projects for road construction sector were awarded under public-private partnership programs, and Indian construction industry is surging via flow of funds and EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) contracts in 2012. NAM Official speaks about October 2012 employment report.

In response to October 2012 employment report, Jay Timmons, President and CEO of NAM, said uptick in jobs is sandwiched between months of job loss and looming fiscal cliff. Manufacturers are increasingly worried that unemployment rate and government policies have lowered GDP by 0.6% this year. Timmons also believes fiscal crisis could lead economy into recession in 2013, with nearly 6 million jobs lost through 2014. Read More

Following meeting between business leaders and President Barack Obama, NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons said manufacturers and employees are already struggling due to uncertainty of fiscal abyss. Timmons said by end of 2012, U.S. GDP will have declined 0.6% as result. Also, he said manufacturers believe solution should focus on repairing structural imbalances in entitlement programs. NAM Letter urges Congress to allow U.S. exports to Russia.

November 16, 2012

NAM sent Key Vote letter to members of House of Representatives urging passage of Russia and Moldova Jackson-Vanik Repeal Act. Legislation will grant U.S. Permanent Normal Trade Relations with Russia to grow U.S. exports and secure market access. According to NAM's Aric Newhouse, it will support jobs and provide intellectual property protections. Newhouse also said less than 5% of Russian imports were U.S. goods in 2011, providing opportunity to increase exports if bill is passed. Read More

U.S. Commerce Department named 4 U.S. organizations as recipients of the 2012 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation’s highest Presidential honor for performance excellence through innovation, improvement, and visionary leadership. NIST, USC Researchers discover nanotube growing process.

University of Southern California (USC) and NIST researchers demonstrated technique for growing virtually pure samples of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with identical structures. If it can be scaled up, approach could solve problem in nanoelectronics of producing carbon nanotubes of specific structure to order. Technique developed by NIST researchers for extracting nanotubes of specific twist from solution involves using DNA molecules that bind to one particular nanotube chirality. Read More

IPC and SMTA jointly announced agenda for Session 5 of High-Reliability Cleaning and Coating Conference, which will take place November 13–15, 2012.  Chaired by Dave Hillman of Rockwell Collins, this session will reach outside of assembly residue failures and address failures due to ionic contamination and tin whiskers, creep corrosion, conformal coating over residues, soldering material combinations used to build assemblies, and residues trapped under bottom termination components. EPA approves additional fuel waivers for NJ, PA, and NY.

U.S. EPA has exercised its authority under Clean Air Act to temporarily waive federal clean diesel fuel requirements in NJ, PA, and in and around New York City to allow use of home heating oil in highway vehicles, nonroad vehicles, and nonroad equipment designated by states for emergency response. Jackson determined that, as a result of Hurricane Sandy, extreme and unusual supply circumstances exist, which may result in temporary shortage of diesel fuel compliant with federal regulations. IPC and WHMA revise cable and wire harness standard.

A joint effort of IPC and the Wire Harness Manufacturer's Association, B revision of IPC/WHMA-A-620, Requirements and Acceptance for Cable and Wire Harness Assemblies addresses more than 500 documented comments and recommendations from users throughout the industry, with 125 new or changed illustrations. Document offers expanded molding and potting section for increased coverage of Class 2 and 3 requirements, new criteria for wires as small as 32 AWG, and section on requirements flow down. Read More

Construction Unemployment dips to 11.4% in October.

According to U.S. Labor Department, nation's construction industry saw slight increase in number of jobs last month as unemployment rate fell to 11.4%, down from 11.9% in September and 13.7% from 1 year ago. Industry added 17,000 jobs in October, resulting in 5 consecutive months of job increases. Construction job growth emerged from nonresidential building construction sector, which added 4,600 jobs for the month, but lost 100 jobs from October 2011. Read More

ASABE to develop grain bin entry standard.

ASABE has initiated project to develop standard that will direct grain bin manufactures to include interior anchorage points to which safety equipment can be attached. Proper use of such equipment would reduce risk of user falling through crusted grain or being pulled into flowing grain if other safety instructions are not followed. NTSB makes safety recommendations to FAA.

According to NTSB, the FAA should require aircraft owners, during each triennial re-registration with FAA's aircraft registry, to identify presence and type of safety devices (ejection seats, ballistic recovery systems, or inflatable restraints) that contain explosive components on aircraft. FAA should make information about these safety devices readily available to first responders and accident investigators by displaying it on FAA online aircraft registry. Read More

AASHTO Transportation TV covers passenger rail in Vermont.

On AASHTO Transportation TV's Two Minute State DOT Update, Brian Searles, Secretary of Vermont Agency of Transportation, said his department is investing more than $60 million to make improvements to keep up with growing demand for passenger rail service. Searles says ridership has climbed steadily every year since 2008 recession. Update also talks about study to find sources of funding for transportation and assessment of permanent fixes following Tropical Storm Irene in 2011. Read More
