ASTM Committee revises sieve terminology standard.

ASTM E1638, Terminology Relating to Sieves, Sieving Methods and Screening Media was developed by Subcommittee E29.01, part of ASTM Committee E29 on Particle and Spray Characterization. Standard reflects the latest technological advances in particle size analysis and particle separation. Terms are related to the manufacture of standard test sieves and screening media as well as methods, analysis, procedures, and equipment for sizing and separating particles. Read More

AASHTO Executive Director commends US DOT Secretary LaHood.

AASHTO Executive Director John Horsley commended U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood for his leadership during the past 4 years. According to Horsley, fatalities have dropped by about 5,000 deaths per year on LaHood's watch, and distracted driving is a national priority today because of his personal zeal. He also helped states create thousands of jobs through investments in highways, transit, and high speed rail. Read More

ASTM Standard addresses testing of hand hygiene products.

January 31, 2013

Approved by Committee E35 on Pesticides, Antimicrobials and Alternative Control Agents, ASTM E2897 describes the use of pigskin as an alternative to human hands in testing the efficacy of hand hygiene products in combating contamination. Standard will permit testing of pathogens that may be encountered in a healthcare environment but would not be tested on human subjects. It also permits testing of conditions that cannot be simulated in a test tube. Read More

EXPO PACK Guadalajara sells out 100% of its exhibit space.

Debuting with 309 exhibitors from 18 countries, premiere edition of EXPO PACK Guadalajara will take place February 27 to March 1, 2013. Enrique Guzman, director of PMMI’s Latin America office reported that 100% of available booth space is taken and noted that the show was announced less than 7 months ago. Covering 32,000+ ft² net of exhibit space, event will be hosting domestic and international exhibitors. Anticipated attendance is 3,000 packaging and processing professionals. Read More

Heidi Brock elected to NAM's CMA Board of Directors.

Heidi Brock, President of Aluminum Association, was elected to Board of Directors of the National Association of Manufacturer’s Council of Manufacturing Associations. CMA is made up of more than 200 industry-specific manufacturing associations that provide resources and networks to members in order to broaden reach of NAM’s advocacy efforts. AAI and MPIF sign MOU to advance workplace safety.

Aluminum Association and Metal Powder Industries Federation announced memorandum of understanding to cooperate in sharing of information in area of metal powder safety. Powder producing members will support one another where appropriate and when feasible by participating in regional workshops and meetings concerning dust hazards and promotion of safety in plant operations. FMA CEO receives CMA Leadership Award.

Ed Youdell, President and CEO of FMA, received CMA Leadership Award from NAM's Council of Manufacturing Associations. Award recognized Youdell's leadership in creating the concept of a national Manufacturing Day and bringing together other industry-leading organizations including NAM, The Manufacturing Institute, and U.S. Commerce Department's Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership to collaborate as co-producers. NREL's RSF influences new high performance buildings.

The Research Support Facility at NREL demonstrates energy savings every day as 1,800 NREL staff start their workdays in a 360,000 ft² Class A office building that generates as much electricity as it uses, thanks to rooftop photovoltaics. The 50,000 ft² Bullitt Center in Seattle is being built with one goal in mind — to be the greenest, most energy-efficient commercial building in the world. SME Invites Art Submissions created with new process.

SME seeks artwork submissions for display in Contemporary Art Gallery during RAPID Additive Manufacturing Solutions Conference and Exposition, which will be held in Pittsburgh, PA from June 10–13, 2013. Contemporary Art Gallery will recognize artists who use additive manufacturing, 3D printing, or 3D imaging technologies to create works of art. By March 4, artists must submit renderings in JPG file format along with their credentials and list of processes used to create said artwork. Annual Reports and Procedural Compliance Forms are due Jan 31.

ANSI and its Procedural and Standards Administration department wish to remind all ANSI-accredited U.S. Technical Advisory Group administrators to ISO that the Procedural Compliance Forms and 2012 TAG Annual Reports must be submitted no later than January 31, 2013, to the ANSI PSA department. Failure to submit these required documents by deadline may jeopardize organization’s status as an ANSI-accredited U.S. TAG and TAG Administrator. Read More

Green Seal Releases Standard for sustainable laundry products.

January 30, 2013

Publication of GS-51 provides standard that specifically addresses life cycle impacts of laundry care products for institutional and industrial settings. In addition to minimizing or eliminating use of hazardous ingredients often found in such products, GS-51 establishes minimum requirements for concentrated (2X) and ultra-concentrated (4X) detergents and fabric softeners. Framework for performance testing was also developed for this standard in cooperation with laundry care industry. Read More

ELFA releases December Monthly Leasing and Finance Index.

According to ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index, overall new business volume for December was 11.5 billion, up 6% from $10.8 billion in same period in 2011. In typical end-of-year spike, volume was up 80% from previous month’s volume of $6.4 billion. Cumulative new business volume for 2012 rose 14% over 2011; receivables over 30 days decreased to lowest level in last 2 years at 1.6%; and charge-offs were up from previous month at 0.6%, but down by 14.3% compared to same period last year. NAM Calls Bipartisan Immigration Proposal strong step forward.

Noting the ineffectiveness of "patchwork solutions," NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons called proposed framework for immigration reform released by bipartisan group of senators "a strong step forward toward comprehensive reform."  Timmons also stated that manufacturers believe all ideas should be on table as comprehensive immigration reform discussion moves forward and that they look forward to offering input and recommendations as specific language is developed. Biofuels Producers React to D.C. Circuit decision on RFS.

D.C. Circuit decided to vacate 2012 cellulosic biofuel standard and affirm 2012 advanced biofuel standard. In reaction, biofuel organization comprised of ABFA, AEC, ACE, BIO, Growth Energy, and RFA made joint statement in which it was noted, “although we disagree with the court’s decision vacating the 2012 cellulosic volumes, today’s decision once again rejects broad-brushed attempts to effectively roll back the federal Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS)."
