PTDA 2012 Industry Summit delivers big ideas.

Held Oct 18-20, PTDA Industry Summit gathered power transmission/motion control industry to network, share solutions, and build business. Themed "Big Ideas to Steer Your Business," event hosted 715 participants, which included 570 industry delegates. Summit featured opening keynote titled "Trends, Technology Taking the Lead" as well as workshops titled "The Changing Sales Model," "Knowledge Transfer  The Emerging Generations," and "Understanding and Implementing Cloud and Mobile Computing." SME Digital Design Award Winners named at RAPID 2012.

November 7, 2012

Announced at SME RAPID 2012 Conference and Exposition, winners of 2012 Design for Direct Digital Manufacturing Competition included 3 entries from University of Louisville, KY. In high school category, 2 winners were announced from Cedar Falls High School in Iowa. Contestants were required to design products representing working prototypes, usable in another assembly, with geometry defined using 3D CAD system capable of producing stereolithography files. ASTM International has announced a new academic offering for university professors to include technical standards as part of their engineering and business curricula. Professor's Tool Kit includes: 5 scripted PowerPoint modules; sample syllabi and standards; short videos on the value of standards and student membership in ASTM; articles about standards education; ASTM industry sector overviews; standards case studies; and informational brochures on membership/benefits. Standards cover insulated apparel and tensile membrane structures.

ANSI/ISEA 201-2012, Classification of Insulating Apparel Used in Cold Work Environments, provides apparel manufacturers, purchasers, and wearers with parameters whereby cold weather clothing can be measured, certified, and specified, so employees can choose the right workwear for their needs. ASCE 55-10, Tensile Membrane Structures, provides minimum criteria for design and performance of membrane-covered cable and rigid member structures, including frame structures. Read More

New ISO Standard aids design of energy-saving residences.

ISO Technical Committee (TC) 205, Building environment design, developed new International Standard – ISO 13153:2012, Framework of the design process for energy-saving single-family residential and small commercial buildings – that provides framework for effective consideration of energy-saving approaches to building of residences and small commercial buildings during various design process stages. Standard also includes 3 annexes intended to facilitate effective usage. RIA announces milestone for Certified Robot Integrator program.

Ten leading system integrators have received the Certified Robot Integrator designation from RIA. In order to become certified, integrators go through rigorous process which includes on-site audit, safety training, and hands-on testing of key personnel among other important criteria. IPC releases PCB industry results for September 2012.

November 6, 2012

According to IPC's North American PCB Statistical Program, rigid PCB shipments were down 5.3% in Sept 2012 from Sept 2011. Bookings decreased 1.8% year over year, and book-to-bill ratio slipped to 1.00. Compared to Sept 2011, flexible circuit shipments were down 19.9%, and bookings were down 20.9%  In addition, flexible circuit book-to-bill ratio dropped to 0.71. For rigid PCBs and flexible circuits combined, shipments were down 6.7% and bookings decreased 3.3% , compared to Sept 2011. Read More

Report Shows North American Robotics Industry up 20% in 2012.

November 5, 2012

According to RIA, North American-based robotics companies reported new orders up 20% in 2012. Total of 16,363 robots, valued at $1.1 billion were ordered in first 9 months, representing increase of 20% in units and 29% in dollars over same period in 2011. Including numbers outside North America, totals are 18,844 robots valued at $1.25 billion. While automotive OEM and component suppliers were largest contributor, other industries include metalworking and life sciences/pharma/biomedical. Read More

Equipment Lease Finance Industry Confidence remains steady.

October 30, 2012

According to October 2012 Monthly Confidence Index for the Equipment Finance Industry, confidence is 53.3, relatively unchanged from September index of 53.0, reflecting steady industry confidence despite economic, political, and regulatory concerns. When asked to assess business conditions over next 4 months, 8.6% of executives said they believe business conditions will improve, relatively unchanged from 8.8% in September, and 74.3% believe business conditions will remain the same. NTSB issues safety recommendations A-12-54 through -58.

According to NTSB, FAA should inform domestic and foreign manufacturers of airplanes that are certified under 14 Code of Federal Regulations Parts 23 and 25 about circumstances of accident. FAA should also work with Flight Test Safety Committee to develop and issue detailed flight test operating guidance that addresses deficiencies documented in this report, and to develop and issue flight test safety program guidelines based on best practices in aviation safety management. ASTM Award of Merit has been presented to Wallace Munden.

October 30, 2012

ASTM International Committee C13 on Concrete Pipe presented Award of Merit to Wallace J. Munden. Member of ASTM International and Committee C13 since 1994, Munden works on several C13 subcommittees and was chairman of Subcommittee C13.07 on Acceptance Specifications and Precast Concrete Box Sections from 2002–2010. He was also member-at-large on C13.90 Executive Subcommittee from 2005–2011 and has provided significant technical knowledge in development of several concrete pipe standards. Read More
