EPA Program seeks to improve air quality in port communities.

December 20, 2013

EPA is announcing availability of $4 million in grant funding to establish clean diesel projects aimed at reducing emissions from marine and inland water ports, many of which are in areas that face environmental justice challenges. Available under Diesel Emission Reduction Act Program, grant competition is the first to focus solely on reducing emissions at ports. DERA funds are used to clean up legacy fleet of diesel engines that were produced before more recent environmental standards. Read More

Equipment Finance Industry Confidence Index decreases slightly.

December 19, 2013

According to the Foundation, December 2013 Monthly Confidence Index for Equipment Finance Industry is 55.8, a decrease from November index of 56.9, reflecting industry concerns over uncertainty regarding capital expenditures and competitive market pressures in 2014. When asked to assess business conditions over next 4 months, 12% of executives said they believe business conditions will improve, down from 17.2% in November, and 9% believe business conditions will worsen, up from 3.4%. Trucking Associations propose sleeper berth pilot project.

American Trucking Associations and Minnesota Trucking Association petitioned Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to conduct pilot program. In addition to examining potential benefits of sleeper berth flexibility for professional truck drivers, pilot project will look how technological improvements promote driver alertness/safety. According to Minnesota Trucking Association's John Hausladen, letting drivers break up 10 hr off-duty period into 2 shorter periods would be beneficial. Read More

ASTM approves airborne nanoparticle measurement standard.

During manufacture of some products, there is potential for nanomaterials to become airborne, resulting in inhalation exposure to workers and consumers. ASTM E2864, Test Method for Measurement of Airborne Metal and Metal Oxide Nanoparticle Surface Area Concentration in Inhalation Exposure Chambers Using Krypton Gas Adsorption, provides clear steps to collect airborne nanomaterials and analyze them to determine their surface area, promoting safe development and use of nanomaterials. EPA is accepting applications for environmental education projects under agency's Environmental Education Grant Program. This program works to engage communities through variety of educational projects that have a lasting impact on people's health by facilitating environmental stewardship. Fuel Economy of New Vehicles sets record high.

December 19, 2013

According to EPA's annual report that tracks average fuel economy of vehicles sold in the U.S., model year 2012 vehicles achieved all-time high fuel economy of 23.6 mpg, representing 1.2 mpg increase over previous year. Fuel economy has now increased in 7 of last 8 years. While EPA does not yet have final data for 2013, preliminary projections are that fuel economy will rise by 0.4 mpg, and carbon dioxide emissions will decrease by 6 grams/mile. Read More
