NTSB holds conference on GIS mapping technology.

On Dec 4-5, NTSB will hold conference to explore use of Geographic Information Systems in analyzing and preventing transportation accidents. GIS technologies and analytical techniques use geographically referenced data to support complex data integration, advanced statistical analysis, precise investigation, and effective visualization of data. NTSB Recommendations address air cargo fires.

November 30, 2012

NTSB has issued 3 recommendations to reduce impact of in-flight fires aboard cargo airplanes, saying current fire protection regulations are inadequate. Recommendations urge Federal Aviation Administration to require active fire suppression systems in all cargo containers or compartments of cargo aircraft. They also recommend improving early detection of fires within cargo containers and pallets and urge that cargo containers provide better fire resistance. Read More

Motion Control Shipments are up 2.3% for first 9 months of 2012.

According to statistics released by Motion Control Association (MCA), motion control product shipments are up 2.3% for first 9 months of 2012 compared to same period in 2011. MCA President Jedd Burnstein called the figure "encouraging," citing weakening global manufacturing and the fiscal cliff threat. MCA Director of Market Analysis Alex Shikany pointed out that strongest growth in shipments for first 9 months of 2012 was seen in sensors and feedback devices at 22.5% and AC Motors at 21.2%. NEMA welcomes House vote on U.S.-Russia trade.

NEMA congratulated strong bipartisan vote by House of Representatives to approve legislation to grant permanent normal trade relations status to Russia and provide access for U.S. businesses to the benefits of the entry of world's ninth largest economy into rules-based international trading system. Russian Federation formally joined the World Trade Organization on August 22, 2012, after many years of negotiations with the U.S. and other major trading partners. Read More

NIST Releases Annual Report on federal technology transfer.

NIST released annual report detailing efforts to transfer results of public investment in research to meet marketplace and other needs. Most recent report tallies thousands of patents, cooperative agreements, licenses, and other pathways. In 2010, 11 federal laboratories included in report had 18,000+ active collaborative relationships with private entities and other government agencies, disclosed more than 4,700+ inventions, submitted 1,830 patent applications, and received 1,143 patents. Grant awarded to train 426 Minnesota workers at MDI.

Minnesota Job Skills Partnership awarded Itasca Community College and AdvancED a $260,000 grant from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. Grant is for the development and delivery of a Commitment to Quality training program for Minnesota Diversified Industries. In addition to award from MJSP, MDI is contributing $750,000 toward training program, along with monies also contributed by ICC. Four individuals and teams have been selected for final phase of the My Air, My Health Challenge, which was created to encourage development of portable devices that gather and integrate health and air quality data to help protect people's health and make environmental information more accessible. Individuals and teams submitted designs for sensors that can be worn or carried and take into account link between airborne pollutants and health measurements, such as heart rate and breathing. PTDA Business Index for 3Q 2012 shows slower continued growth.

Reading of 50.3 produced by 3Q12 PTDA Business Index represents deceleration from 2Q12 reading of 54.2, indicating power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) industry expanded for tenth consecutive quarter at slower pace compared with 2Q12. Distributors and manufacturers reported decelerated sales growth compared to last quarter. On average, sales rose 5% in 3Q12, down from 7% growth in 2Q12. With average forecast of 6%, PTDA members expect 2013 to be another year of growth. Read More

EPA keeps renewable fuels levels in place.

EPA announced that it has not found evidence to support a finding of severe "economic harm" that would warrant granting a waiver of the Renewable Fuels Standard. Economic analyses of impacts in the agricultural sector, conducted with USDA, showed that on average waiving the mandate would only reduce corn prices by approximately 1%. PMA Business Conditions Report forecasts steady conditions.

According to November 2012 PMA Business Conditions Report, metalforming companies expect steady business conditions during next 3 months; 45% of 125 sampled metalforming companies anticipate economic activity will remain unchanged. Companies also expect slight uptick in incoming orders over same time period, while average daily shipping levels remained steady. EPA raises food waste awareness on America Recycles Day.

For 15th annual America Recycles Day, held on November 15, EPA renewed its commitment to helping Americans reduce wasted food with Sustainable Materials Management Food Recovery Challenge. Initiative helps participants make purchasing decisions, find uses for surplus food, and recycle rather than send waste to landfills. NEMA publishes Flashing Yellow Arrow amendment.

NEMA published Amendment 4 to NEMA TS 2-2002 (R2008) Traffic Controller Assemblies with NTCIP Requirements, supporting Flashing Yellow Arrow features. Amendment 4 standardizes control and monitoring features for FYA, a traffic signal head indication, adding these features to widely used NEMA TS 2. In government-sponsored field trials, FYA improved driver performance when yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians before making a turn. Read More
