ANSI Takes Part in Moscow Meeting on technical standards.

February 21, 2013

ANSI took part in meeting of Russian and U.S. experts on international trade hosted by Moscow's World Trade Center. Attended by number of U.S. officials and high-ranking Russian representatives, meeting included discussion of methods to promote future U.S.-Russian trade, including cooperation in areas of technical standards and compliance assurance. One suggestion included launching standards exchange event to gain better knowledge of each side's approach to standards development. Read More

Program aims to help applicants develop solutions to local challenges and to share them with other communities. NEMA welcomes call for U.S.-EU trade negotiations.

February 20, 2013

NEMA welcomed President Obama's announcement during the State of the Union address of his intention to enter the U.S. into comprehensive free trade negotiations with the 27-member European Union later this year. In 2012, NEMA urged the administration to launch such negotiations as part of a strategy to reduce uncertainty and raise the level of confidence for electrical manufacturers and associated services providers that want to trade and invest across the Atlantic. NEMA publishes small electric motor standards white paper.

NEMA MGW 1-2013 covers issues pertaining to rulemaking for Energy Conservation Standards for Small Electric Motors of March 9, 2010, and related documents. White paper does not cover Department of Energy’s energy conservation standards and test procedures for electric motors, which apply to much larger set of products. EPA releases Chemical Data Reporting information.

February 20, 2013

EPA has released 2012 CDR information database, which provides use and exposure information on more than 7,600 chemicals used in U.S. commerce. Companies are now required to provide information on chemicals used in children’s and other consumer products, along with reports on commercial applications and industrial uses of chemicals. For first time ever, EPA also required companies to substantiate confidentiality claims to ensure that as much information as possible is made available to public. 4Q12 PTDA Business Index indicates continued moderate growth.

Up from 3Q2012 reading of 50.3, 4Q12 PTDA Business Index reading of 50.7 indicates power transmission/motion control industry expanded for eleventh consecutive quarter. Sales rose 6% in 4Q12, up from 5% in 3Q12, and same percentages applied to distributor sales growth. Manufacturers reported sales of 6%, flat from 3Q, and PTDA members expect 2013 to be another year of growth with average projection of 7% (up from 6% in 3Q2013). Also, 13 of 14 end markets were reported in positive territory. Read More

BIO praises Rep. Patrick McHenry on bill to speed JOBS Act.

BIO lauds Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) for introducing H.R. 701, a bill to speed implementation of a key provision in Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act, which directed US SEC to make revisions to Regulation A that will increase access to capital for growing companies, such as biotech innovators. Once changes are implemented, Regulation A will spur fundraising for emerging biotech companies, for which $50 million capital influx could support groundbreaking research and stimulate job creation. A number of RIA members have partnered with All Hands Volunteers to create The Sandy Solution, a cleaning solution designed to remediate houses with mold growth as a result of flooding from Hurricane Sandy. Depending on building conditions and needs of homeowner, solution offers stepped approach to repair the damage. Advanced Biofuel Organizations expose API's RFS distortions.

February 19, 2013

In January 2012 ruling, U.S. Court of Appeals for D.C. Circuit ordered EPA to reconsider 2012 Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) obligation for cellulosic biofuels but rejected all other complaints brought by American Petroleum Institute (API). Regarding letter sent by API to EPA that claims "zeroing out the 2012 obligation is the only proper implementation of the Court’s ruling," BIO's Brent Erickson said API should yield to EPA's recognized authority and EPA should reject API's spin attempt. FAA Requests Proposals for UAS research and test sites.

FAA solicited proposals to develop 6 unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) research and test sites around USA. UAS introduction into national airspace will require ensuring privacy is appropriately protected. Accordingly, FAA is requesting public input into FAA efforts to ensure privacy questions surrounding pilot program are properly addressed. FAA's proposed privacy approach emphasizes transparency, public engagement, and compliance with existing law. BSA supports Operation Military Kids.

U.S. Manufacturing Technology Orders have best year since 1996.

According to AMT, December U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $499.43 million, which was up 17.8% from November but down 9.4% when compared to total of $550.99 million reported for December 2011. With year-end total of $5,705.58 million, 2012 was up 2.6% compared with 2011. These numbers and all data in this report are based on totals of actual data reported by companies participating in USMTO program.

Speed Identification Symbol Standard has been revised by ASABE.

American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) revised its standard defining speed identification symbol for agricultural equipment. Specifically, ANSI/ASAE S584.3 JAN2013, Agricultural Equipment: Speed Identification Symbol (SIS), corrects transposed symbol in previous version. Read More
