Developing Textile Wear Test Standard is open to contributions.

Interested parties are invited to join ongoing development of ASTM International standard ASTM D3181, which provides data that helps predict expected wear performance of various textiles in end-use conditions. Content includes statistical methods for test design and analysis of data as well as standard procedures for evaluation of textiles. Uses include determining comparative performance; determining suitability in different end uses, and wear effect evaluation and comparison. Read More

National Aerospace Standard NAS9924, "Cyber Security Baseline" benefits aerospace and defense suppliers of all capability levels by giving supply chain a base line of standard practices they can follow to protect their information system infrastructures from cyber threats. Standard enables companies to assess themselves on their IT security practices and helps them determine their preparedness for cyber threat risk management for their customers while assessing risks presented by their suppliers. LIA Standard covers laser-based fiber optic system safety.

With exponential growth of fiber-optic telecommunications comes the need for well-trained installation and service personnel. ANSI Z136.2 provides guidance for safe use, maintenance, service, and installation of optical communications systems utilizing laser diodes or LEDs operating at wavelengths between 0.6 microns and 1 mm. Proposed Standard pertains to stormwater hydrodynamic systems.

Proposed standard ASTM WK39909, Specification for Surrogate Test Solids for Measuring Performance of Stormwater Treatment Devices, will be used to specify test material with common target particle size distribution for use in testing HDS systems. According to ASTM's Adam Stevens, standard will give regulatory agencies option to adopt such surrogates into their existing testing protocols and eliminate need to address possible market discontinuance or later revision of their protocols. Industry Associations honor NREL employees.

NREL Engineer Ian Metzger has been named by ASHRAE as its New Face of Engineering. Program promotes accomplishments of young engineers by highlighting their engineering contributions and resulting impact on public welfare. NREL's net-zero, 360,000 sq ft., Research Support Facility in Golden, CO, also was also honored by ASHRAE. NREL Research Fellow David Ginley received Materials Research Society's Woody Award, which recognizes volunteer who has made extraordinary contributions to Society. Read More

NREL's Economic Benefit to Colorado totals $814.8 million.

According to study by University of Colorado's Leeds School of Business, net economic benefit of NREL to Colorado's economy was $814.8 million in fiscal year 2012. Jefferson County, where NREL's main campus is located and where half of NREL's employees live, enjoyed greatest economic impact, with $274.6 million. Although NREL's economic impact in Colorado fell 2.4% from FY 2011, it is still 38.5% higher than $588.3 million impact in FY 2009. Laboratory supported approximately 2,300 jobs in 2012. Read More

Peter Chiang joins IPC as new vice president of IPC China.

Within his role of vice president of IPC China, Peter Chiang will work in conjunction with IPC China President Phil Carmichael to lead the organization’s China operations and staff. Motion Control Association (MCA) announced its 2013 Board of Directors on February 21 during MCA Business Conference in Orlando, FL. John Hegel was named Chairman of the Board, and Bill Steury will serve as Vice-Chairman of MCA. Construction Materials Prices see increase in January 2013.

March 1, 2013

National construction material prices increased 0.7% in January, with year-over-year prices rising 1.3%, while nonresidential construction materials prices were up 0.6% for month and 0.8% during last 12 months. According to ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu, this data "indicates that ABC’s prediction of increased volatility in 2013 after a period of unusually stable prices in 2012 is proving to be correct." Committee approves last standard in military sampling series.

ASTM International Committee E11 on Quality and Statistics has approved the last in a series of ASTM standards that preserve military sampling standards that were originally under jurisdiction of U.S. DOD. ASTM E2910, Guide for Preferred Methods for Acceptance of Product, preserves MIL-STD-1916 in its original form. Purpose of standard is to encourage producers supplying goods and services to submit efficient and effective process control procedures in place of prescribed sampling requirements. Read More

EPA announced nominations for 2013 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards for companies and institutions that can design chemicals or new products that help protect public health and the environment. Nominations for innovative technologies that feature design of greener chemicals, greener chemical synthesis, or greener chemical reactions are due by April 30. An American National Standard from Consumer Electronic Association, CEA 708.1-2012, Digital TV Closed Captioning: 3D Extensions, specifies signaling to allow CEA-708 caption services to be rendered with stereoscopic program content. To ensure filtration process is effective and results in safe drinking water, American Water Works Association released AWWA B101-2012, Precoat Filter Media.
