EPA Study reveals shift in housing developments across USA.

December 24, 2012

Released by U.S. EPA, 2012 Residential Construction Trends in America's Metropolitan Regions report finds nearly 3 of 4 large metropolitan regions saw increased share of new housing development in previously developed areas (infill housing) during 2005–2009 compared to 2000–2004. Among all 209 metropolitan regions examined, 21% of new homes were infill; remaining share was built on undeveloped land outside existing communities. Read More

ASTM International and Standards Engineering Society have presented 2012 Robert J. Painter Award to Daniel J. Lemieux, principal and unit manager at Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates Inc. Award is presented annually to individual who contributes the most outstanding service to standards development in given year. A member of ASTM since 1995, Lemieux was recognized for his exceptional contributions to consensus standards for building and construction, specifically building enclosure commissioning. Read More

November 2012 ELFA MLFI-25 shows new business volume growth.

December 24, 2012

ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) shows overall new business volume for November is up 3% from volume of $6.2 billion in same period in 2011 and down 16% from previous month. Cumulative new business volume increased 15% year-to-date. Receivables over 30 days increased to 2.0% from 1.7% in October, and charge-offs were up from previous month at 0.5% but down by 28.6% compared to same period last year. Credit approvals totaled 77.0%, down from 79.5% percent in October. Read More

NAM Speaks on Court Ruling about EPA greenhouse gas regulation.

In his statement on U.S. Court of Appeals for D.C. Circuit's denial to rehear coalition's case against EPA's regulation of greenhouse gases, NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons expressed disappointment but also welcomed "careful and well-reasoned dissenting opinions" written by 2 judges who supported NAM's arguments. On Jan 22, 2013, ASTM and Bombay Textile Research Association will conduct workshop on geotextiles. Dual-Core Optical Fiber enhances data routes.

Optical fibers, which carry content at speed of light, must connect to sluggish switches, routers, and buffers to transmit data. Researchers have developed dual-core optical fiber that can perform same functions by applying miniscule amount of mechanical pressure. Described in OSA's open-access journal Optics Express, these nanomechanical fibers, which have light-carrying cores suspended less than 1 µm apart from each other, could enhance data processing and serve as sensors in electronic devices. ELFA's December 2012 MCI-EFI shows declining confidence.

According to December 2012 Monthly Confidence Index for Equipment Finance Industry (MCI-EFI), confidence in equipment finance market is 48.5, down from November's 49.9, and reflects concerns regarding impact of fiscal issues on capital expenditures despite overall sense of optimism. Of executives responding to prediction of business conditions over next 4 months, 5.9% expected improvement, 73.5% said it would remain same, and 20.6% believe conditions will worsen. Read More

EPA Enforcement protects communities from harmful pollution.

U.S. EPA released its annual enforcement results, showing significant environmental and public health protections achieved. In 2012, there was a reduction of 2.2 billion pounds of air, water, and land pollution, as well as 4.4 billion pounds of hazardous waste, and $252 million in civil and criminal penalties levied. In addition, EPA also focused on enforcement efforts that reduce smaller amounts of pollution but have substantial health impact in communities. Read More
