Transocean Pleads Guilty to Deepwater Horizon CWA violation.

February 25, 2013

Transocean Deepwater Inc. pled guilty today to violation of Clean Water Act (CWA) that involved illegal conduct which led to 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster and was sentenced to pay $400 million in criminal fines and penalties. During guilty plea and sentencing proceeding, Judge Milazzo found imposed criminal payments, directed to National Academy of Sciences and National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, appropriately designed to help remedy harm done to Gulf of Mexico. During Robotics Industry Forum, 2013 RIA Board of Directors was announced. The following robotic industry leaders join the board for their first 2-year terms: Henrik Christensen, Director of Robotics, Georgia Institute of Technology; Chuck Keibler, VP, Genesis Systems Group, LLC; and Pete Squires, VP, Schneider Packaging Equipment Company. AAMA 520-12, Voluntary Specification for Rating the Severe Wind-Driven Rain Resistance of Windows, Doors and Unit Skylights, is based on rapidly pulsed pressure differential method, recognizing that conditions encountered during tropical storms, hurricanes, or severe thunderstorms are not static. Dr. Robert Furey receives honorary membership award from ASTM.

ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants presented Robert Furey with George V. Dyroff Award of Honorary Committee Membership in recognition of outstanding achievement in and contributions to field of petroleum products and lubricants. Member of ASTM and Committee D02 since 1979, Furey began his professional career at General Motors in Warren, MI in 1969. Outside ASTM International, Furey is member of American Chemical Society and SAE International. Read More

AEM Commends President's Focus and chides lack of policies.

In his statement regarding President Barack Obama's State of the Union address, AEM President Dennis Slater agreed with the need to create jobs and grow USA's economy but pointed out "a glaring absence of focus on policies that could immediately create jobs and provide certainty to our economy." Slater noted failure to mention Keystone XL pipeline approval plans and also brought up long-term farm bill as well as shortcomings of short-term stimulus funding. Read More

NIST's Boulder Lab achieves LEED Gold certification.

Despite any need to meet special requirements for its research mission, Precision Measurement Laboratory (PML) at NIST campus in Boulder, CO received LEED Gold certification. Features that led to this rating include estimated overall building design that is 37% more efficient than that of standard building of same size, reduced water use via low-flow fixtures and natural irrigation, efficient lighting fixtures, variable-speed chillers, and project's use of recycled content (over 30%). NIST, DOJ Form Commission to develop forensic lab guidelines.

NIST and U.S. DOJ announced forming of National Commission on Forensic Science, which will develop policy recommendations for Attorney General. Considering guidance on practices for federal, state, and local forensic science laboratories developed by NIST-administered groups of forensic science practitioners and academic researchers, commission will be responsible for developing guidance concerning intersections between forensic science and courtroom and developing policy recommendations. IPC names John Hasselmann as VP of Government Relations.

In his role as vice president of government relations, John Hasselmann will be responsible for development and implementation of organization's global advocacy efforts and policy agenda. He will work closely with IPC’s Government Relations Steering Committee, and IPC Washington, D.C. office staff, to identify issues and other opportunities where IPC can demonstrate its global leadership in government relations and public policy. ANSI supports Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership.

During State of the Union address, President Barack Obama announced administration’s decision to launch formal U.S.–EU trade negotiations in form of Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. Decision was taken based on recommendations from U.S.–EU High Level Working Group on Jobs and Growth. At their meeting in Dublin, European Standards Organizations CEN, CENELEC, and ETSI, along with ANSI, agreed to maintain and intensify collaboration with concern to aligning their standards. This effort is seen as necessary in order to facilitate trade in both goods and services between Europe and USA and will become increasingly important as EU and USA are about to begin negotiations on Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). Bryce Davis selected College Edition nominee.

Bryce Davis, a 4th year manufacturing engineering student at Texas State University-San Marcos, has been selected a College Edition nominee by the National Engineers Week Foundation, one of 37 promising engineering students nominated by 15 engineering organizations from the United States and across the world. Bryce will graduate in 2013 thanks in part to scholarship funding provided by the SME Education Foundation who nominated him. Read More
