ASTM Standard covers water vapor transmission in packaging.

ASTM International Committee F02 on Flexible Barrier Packaging is developing a new standard to test the transmission rate of water vapor into packaging materials, which is a key component for the shelf life of many products. Proposed standard WK49124, Test Method for Water Vapor Transmission Rate through Packages Using a Modulated Infrared Sensor, is based on another ASTM standard, F1249, that measures water vapor through plastic film and sheeting with pressure modulated infrared detector. IPC issues statement on TSCA Modernization Act of 2015.

IPC commends the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Environment and the Economy for taking action on the draft TSCA Modernization Act of 2015. IPC supports bipartisan efforts to reform the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976, which needs to be modernized to reflect 21st century realities.  A strong, cost-effective, science-based federal chemical regulatory program is important to members, their customers, and consumers, and the draft bill is a step in the right direction. CSA Group opened a new laboratory for testing and certification of equipment used in hazardous locations. Located in Flintshire, U.K, laboratory is 27,000 sq-ft and utilizes latest equipment and techniques. It offers compliance testing as well as Ingress Protection tests, temperature rise testing designed to simulate real life conditions, explosion and flameproof test cells, fuel dispenser testing, and non-metal lab specifically designed to reduce risk of sparking. Newly revised draft addresses comments from previous comment period and aims to help standardize ways in which plant water demands are quantified for landscape purposes. NEMA testifies on critical minerals legislation in U.S. Senate.

Kevin J. Cosgriff, president and CEO of NEMA, testified at hearing of U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources in support of legislation to update federal policy related to mineral resources critical to many NEMA member companies. ASTM Proposed Standard supports interlaboratory collaboration.

Proposed standard WK49230, Guide for Conducting Round Robin Studies for Additive Manufacturing, will describe how to plan and conduct interlaboratory study involving additive manufacturing processes or materials. Specifically, this standard will provide guidance to ensure process, logistics, and tools are identified and agreed upon in advance to manage round robin. Report on GM Crops indicates effect on global food security.

According to "GM Crops: Global Socio-Economic and Environmental Impacts 1996–2013", economic benefits for farmers using genetically modified (GM) seeds amounted to average of over $122/hectare in 2013. This report, released by PG Economics, cites more productive agriculture, higher farmer incomes, and improved environment for citizens in this 18th year of "widespread adoption." LanzaTech CEO to receive 2015 BIO Rosalind Franklin Award.

BIO announced that Dr. Jennifer Holmgren, CEO of LanzaTech carbon recycling company, has been selected by a committee of peers to receive 2015 BIO Rosalind Franklin Award. The award was established to honor an outstanding woman in the field of industrial biotechnology. Prior to joining LanzaTech, Dr. Holmgren was VP and General Manager of the Renewable Energy and Chemicals business unit at UOP LLC, a Honeywell Company. BIO applauds SEC for finalizing tick size pilot program.

BIO praises Securities and Exchange Commission for approving proposal by the national securities exchange and FINRA for 2-year pilot program that would widen minimum quoting and trading increments for stocks of some smaller companies. Pilot program will test impact of $0.05 tick on certain small companies to spur trading activity in their stock. ASABE Revises 3 Standards for PTO operating requirements.

May 13, 2015

ASABE announced completion of 3 standards projects — adoption of two ISO standards and revision of one ASABE document — related to Type 4 power take-off (PTO) specifications. ANSI/ASABE AD 500-1:2014 consists of adoption with modifications of identically titled ISO 500-1:2014, and ASABE/ISO 500-3:2014 is identical adoption of ISO document of same name. ASAE S207.13 includes Type 4 PTO requirements and such changes as updates to normative references. Read More

AASHTO Congratulates Nadeau on nomination as FHWA Administrator.

May 13, 2015

AASHTO offered congratulations to Deputy Administrator Greg Nadeau on his nomination as Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Administrator. Calling Nadeau "a solid choice" by President Obama, AASHTO executive director Bud Wright said that Greg "served as the acting FHWA administrator with distinction" and cited his "energy and vision" regarding Every Day Counts program. FAA Re-Evaluates Method for measuring effects of aircraft noise.

May 12, 2015

FAA plans to begin work on next step in updating scientific evidence on relationship between aircraft noise exposure and its effects on communities around airports. Starting within next 2–3 months, FAA will contact residents around select U.S. airports through mail and telephone to survey public perceptions of aviation noise throughout course of any given year. Study will poll communities surrounding 20 airports nationwide, and FAA hopes to finish gathering data by 2016's end. Read More
