Jamie Gregorian joins BIO staff.

BIO announces that Jamie Gregorian will be joining BIO staff as Director, Federal Government Relations. Gregorian comes to BIO after 5 years with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Jamie was AAOS' Senior Manager, Government Relations and Specialties where he worked on variety of health-related issues and oversaw all advocacy efforts related to judiciary matters, medical research, defense, appropriations, and subspecialty interests. EPA aims to reduce copper in motor vehicle brake pads.

January 26, 2015

U.S. EPA, the automotive industry, and states signed agreement to reduce use of copper and other materials in motor vehicle brake pads. Copper-Free Brake Initiative calls for cutting copper in brake pads to less than 5% by 2021 and 0.5% by 2025. Voluntary initiative also calls for cutting amount of mercury, lead, cadmium, asbestiform fibers, and chromium-6 salts in brake pads. These steps will decrease runoff of these materials from roads into nation’s streams, rivers and lakes. Read More

NEMA Low Voltage Surge Protective Devices Section launched updated version of its website, nemasurge.org, which is home to NEMA Surge Protection Institute and provides information and resources to residential, commercial, and industrial consumers related to surge protection. According to Committee Chairman Tom Colcombe, nemasurge.org's mission is to raise awareness concerning benefits of surge protection to users of low-voltage electrical systems in North America. LIA has updated their Laser Safety Guide making it a necessity for every safe laser environment. Easy to comprehend and full of practical information, guide has been revised to comply with new terminology and guidelines of 2014 edition of ANSI Z136.1 Safe Use of Lasers standard. It can serve as useful tool during training and is recommended for personnel who work with or around lasers and laser systems greater than Class 1, who do not have the specific responsibilities of LSO. Hunter Technology Corp hosts visit by Congressman Mike Honda.

As part of IPC's "Meet the Policymakers" program, Congressman Mike Honda (D-CA-17) met with executives and employees of Hunter Technology Corp in Milpitas, CA. Issues discussed included Revitalize American Manufacturing and Innovation (RAMI) Act, of which Rep Honda was co-sponsor. Honda also toured the facility and met with staff to discuss current manufacturing industry state as well as how recent legislative moves will enhance it. Read More

ASTM International announces leadership succession plan.

January 22, 2015

ASTM International's future leadership was decided at October meetings of ASTM board of directors in Seoul, South Korea. Katharine E. Morgan, current ASTM vice president of technical committee operations, will succeed ASTM president James A. Thomas. To ensure smooth transition for ASTM members and customers, Morgan will assume ASTM executive vice president position on March 1, 2015 and work closely with Jim Thomas until his retirement on February 1, 2017. OSHA and LIA renew alliance to protect workers.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration has renewed an alliance with Laser Institute of America to help protect workers from exposure to beam and non-beam laser hazards in industrial, construction, medical, and research workplaces. During 5-year alliance, participants will provide annual training on the Best Practices Seminar on Laser Safety, develop a Webinar training program based on the seminar, and distribute laser safety guidance products at safety conferences and exhibits. A group from the China Association of Machinery Industry for Environmental Protection visited ASTM headquarters for a training session on Dec. 15. Delegation, which included representatives from manufacturers of environmental monitoring and sampling equipment located throughout China, learned about ASTM Committee D22 on Air Quality and its Subcommittee D22.03 on Ambient Atmospheres and Source Emissions. EPA's Actions to Restrict PFOA yield health benefits.

To further agency and industry achievements, U.S. EPA proposed measures to ensure that perfluorinated chemicals that have been phased out do not re-enter the marketplace without review. Action builds on several EPA has taken since 2006, when reaching agreement with companies to phase-out chemicals by the end of 2015. Participating companies are on track to phase-out these toxic chemicals and have successfully developed over 150 alternatives. Read More

Administration takes steps forward on climate action plan.

January 20, 2015

Obama Administration is announcing new goal to cut methane emissions from oil and gas sector by 40–45% from 2012 levels by 2025, and a set of actions to put U.S. on path to achieve this ambitious goal. EPA will initiate a rulemaking effort to set standards for methane and VOC emissions from new and modified oil and gas production sources, and natural gas processing and transmission sources. In developing these standards, EPA will work with industry, states, tribes, and other stakeholders. Read More

In conjunction with Dubai Municipality's Dubai Central Laboratory, ASTM supported the 2nd Annual Quality Assurance for Sustainable Construction Materials Conference, held Dec 10-11. ASTM provided keynote address, "The Role of ASTM International in Improving Quality Standards," to the 180 attendees. While in Dubai, ASTM staff also visited the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company to present information about ASTM's new self-guided online training courses on ASTM test methods for petroleum. Read More
