SPI announces expo agenda and call for speakers.

NREL Research advances understanding of photoelectrodes.

December 7, 2015

Scientists of NREL have developed a new spectroscopic probe that could lead to better photoelectrochemical cells, which can be used to convert solar energy into transportable chemical fuels. By using newly developed probe, scientists uncovered the role that a titanium dioxide (TiO2) / GaInP2 interface plays in the photoconversion process. Paper on the discovery, "Semiconductor interfacial carrier dynamics via photoinduced electric fields," was published in Science Magazine. Read More

AMCA International announces 2015-2016 president, board members.

AMCA International Inc. announced Tim Kilgore as 2015–2016 president of AMCA Board of Directors. AMCA 2014–2015 Executive Committee members include Chairman Patrick A. Cockrum, President Tim Kilgore, VP Tim O’Hare, Treasurer Doug Yamashita, and Secretary Dan Hartlein. Newly elected Board members include Amit Ahuja and David A. Johnson. AMCA director Tom Gustafson will serve second 3-year term. Board members currently serving as director are Mats Georg Sándor, Bek Siew Hup, and John Magill. Read More

BIO supports Fostering Innovation Act.

BIO applauds Reps. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) and Michael Fitzpatrick (R-PA) for introducing the Fostering Innovation Act. This bill would reduce compliance costs for growing businesses that benefited from the JOBS Act, which provides Emerging Growth Companies with 5-year exemption from Section 404(b) of Sarbanes-Oxley. Fostering Innovation Act would extend exemption for additional 5 years for former EGCs that maintain public float below $700 million and average annual revenues below $50 million. Read More

October Construction Unemployment improved in 30 States from 2014.

December 7, 2015

Year-over-year, not seasonally adjusted (NSA) construction unemployment rates for USA and 30 states were lower in October 2015. Year to date (YTD), construction added 159,000 seasonally adjusted (SA) domestic jobs. National NSA jobs increased 228,000 from October 2014 to October 2015, and SA construction spending in October increased 1% from September. YTD NSA construction spending, as of October, was up 10.7%, and NSA construction unemployment rate rose to 6.2%. Read More

ISO has submitted updated proposal for new field of activity on corrosion control. As U.S. member body to ISO, ANSI invites all interested stakeholders to submit comments on proposal by end of business day Friday, January 15, 2016. Work item proposal, submitted by ANSI and Standardization Administration of China, explains that the standardization of corrosion control would include terms and definitions, general requirements, and evaluation of corrosion control engineering life cycle. BIO Issues Statement on Hepatitis C medicines report.

In his statement regarding report released by Senators Grassley and Wyden, BIO Senior VP of Communications Kenneth Lisaius stated that BIO is reviewing said report in full and generally does not comment on product pricing by member companies. Lisaius added, however, that "balanced debate about the cost of groundbreaking cures" cannot narrow their focus on price but also acknowledge value provided to patients as well as overall healthcare system. SPI Issues Statement on Senate's approval of TPA.

On behalf of U.S. plastics industry and its workers, SPI's William R. Carteaux congratulated Senate for approving Trade Promotion Authority (TPA). "This vote," offered Carteaux, "will give trade negotiators the authority and the flexibility they need to finalize a robust Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) between the United States and 11 Pacific-rim countries." Carteaux cited TPA as having potential to expand exports as well as allowing companies to create more jobs with better wages. Read More

ASTM Standard helps make public bathrooms safer for disabled.

ASTM International standard C1822, Specification for Insulating Covers on Accessible Lavatory Piping, provides guidance on protecting people from exposed pipes in accessible lavatories. Standard identifies insulation materials and also provides safety, health, and durability criteria for combinations of materials and performance. As part of that, it allows designers and specifiers to select from 4 fire performance classifications, depending on type of building being designed. Read More

ASTM Test Method aims to protect systems during fires.

ASTM's Committee D09 invites anyone to join in developing new standard to help maintain integrity of cables during emergency such as a fire. Proposed standard WK52230, Test Method for Determination of Acid Gas Content of Wire and Cable Insulation or Jacket Material, will help determine halogen content of flame retardant cables. Manufacturers, insulation-materials producers, and test laboratories will use standard to ensure that insulation and cable jackets protect against corrosive damage. Read More

AIA says Congress must pass full appropriation.

In statement, AIA President and CEO David F Melcher called on Congress to pass an omnibus appropriations bill in early December that would avoid the specter of a year-long continuing resolution. Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015 provides badly needed funds and a measure of stability across all government agencies for the next 2 years. AMCA confers Distinguished Service Award to Art Lapointe.

AMCA International Inc. announced it will confer its 2015 Distinguished Service Award upon Art LaPointe, Group President, Construction Specialties Inc., Cranford, NJ, at its 60th Annual Meeting. Construction Specialties has been an AMCA member for over 35 years, and LaPointe has been personally involved with AMCA for nearly 20 years. Proposed Energy Audits Standard is open for public comment.

ASHRAE/ACCA Standard 211P, Standard for Commercial Building Energy Audits, intends to bring order to energy audit industry. Open for public comment until January 4, 2016, this standard from ASHRAE and the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) will define procedures for performing Energy Audits Levels 1, 2 and 3; provide common scope of work for said audit levels for users; establish standardized industry practices; and establish minimum reporting requirements for results. FAA Administrator addresses UAS registration report.

FAA Administrator Michael Huerta made the following statement regarding the UAS Registration Task Force Report: At the direction of the Secretary, FAA announced the formation of a task force to develop a process for owners of small Unmanned Aircraft Systems to register their aircraft.
