BIO praises Rep. Patrick McHenry on bill to speed JOBS Act.

BIO lauds Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) for introducing H.R. 701, a bill to speed implementation of a key provision in Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act, which directed US SEC to make revisions to Regulation A that will increase access to capital for growing companies, such as biotech innovators. Once changes are implemented, Regulation A will spur fundraising for emerging biotech companies, for which $50 million capital influx could support groundbreaking research and stimulate job creation. RIA Members create cleaning solution for flood damage.

A number of RIA members have partnered with All Hands Volunteers to create The Sandy Solution, a cleaning solution designed to remediate houses with mold growth as a result of flooding from Hurricane Sandy. Depending on building conditions and needs of homeowner, solution offers stepped approach to repair the damage. Unlike other cleaning solutions used in flood cleanup, The Sandy Solution uses a foam generator to apply anti-microbial cleaners. Read More

Advanced Biofuel Organizations expose API's RFS distortions.

In January 2012 ruling, U.S. Court of Appeals for D.C. Circuit ordered EPA to reconsider 2012 Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) obligation for cellulosic biofuels but rejected all other complaints brought by American Petroleum Institute (API). Regarding letter sent by API to EPA that claims "zeroing out the 2012 obligation is the only proper implementation of the Court’s ruling," BIO's Brent Erickson said API should yield to EPA's recognized authority and EPA should reject API's spin attempt. FAA Requests Proposals for UAS research and test sites.

FAA solicited proposals to develop 6 unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) research and test sites around USA. UAS introduction into national airspace will require ensuring privacy is appropriately protected. Accordingly, FAA is requesting public input into FAA efforts to ensure privacy questions surrounding pilot program are properly addressed. FAA's proposed privacy approach emphasizes transparency, public engagement, and compliance with existing law. BSA supports Operation Military Kids.

BSA is supporting U.S. military families through local charity in South Carolina called Operation Military Kids, which is part of the National Operation Military Kids initiative designated to provide support to children and youth of families that are impacted by global contingency operations. To make bearing industry contribution more significant, convention committee and Board of Directors are suggesting that each member company and participating manufacturer match BSA's contribution of $3,000. U.S. Manufacturing Technology Orders have best year since 1996.

According to AMT, December U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $499.43 million, which was up 17.8% from November but down 9.4% when compared to total of $550.99 million reported for December 2011. With year-end total of $5,705.58 million, 2012 was up 2.6% compared with 2011. These numbers and all data in this report are based on totals of actual data reported by companies participating in USMTO program.

AASHTO Applauds Obama's consistent message on transportation.

EPA Strengthens Protections for human studies with pesticides.

Lisa P. Jackson signed amendments strengthening existing standards for human research involving pesticides submitted by third parties for consideration in EPA decision-making. Amendments broaden scope and applicability of EPA 2006 rule, strengthening standards for research considered in EPA decisions; clarifying approach used in EPA's science and ethics reviews of human research involving pesticides; and disallowing participation in testing by subjects who cannot consent for themselves. NREL, Partners demonstrate quantum dots that assemble themselves.

Scientists from U.S. Department of Energy's NREL and other labs have demonstrated process whereby quantum dots can self-assemble at optimal locations in nanowires. Several practical applications are possible, and fact that stable quantum dots can be placed very close to surface of nanometers raises potential for use in detecting local electric and magnetic fields. Also, quantum dots could be used to charge converters for better light-harvesting as with photovoltaic cells. Read More
