Scientists mimic fireflies to make brighter LEDs.

January 10, 2013

Researchers from Belgium, France, and Canada studied internal structure of firefly lanterns and identified unexpected pattern of jagged scales that enhanced the lanterns’ glow. They applied that knowledge to LED design to create an LED overlayer that mimicked the natural structure. This overlayer, which increased LED light extraction by up to 55%, could be tailored to existing diode designs. The work is published in a pair of papers in Optical Society’s open-access journal Optics Express. Read More
