Association completes Aluminum Standards and Data 2013.

Aluminum Association has finalized the 2013 edition of Aluminum Standards and Data, the preeminent reference for aluminum mill product standards and the most complete source of information on wrought aluminum. This edition includes updated chemical limits and mechanical property tables; revised terminology section; added color codes for alloy identification; modified density calculation procedure; and amended specifications section to improve cross referencing industry specifications. EPA honors green chemistry award winners.

Through Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge program, EPA is recognizing landmark green chemistry technologies that are contributing to use of chemicals and products that are safer for people’s health and environment. Awards are presented in 5 categories: academic, small business, greener synthetic pathways, greener reaction conditions, and designing greener chemicals. EPA adds 9 hazardous waste sites to National Priorities List.

EPA is adding 9 hazardous waste sites that pose risks to people's health and the environment to the National Priorities List of Superfund sites. Established by Congress in 1980, Superfund program has provided important benefits, including reduction of threats to human health and ecological systems, improvement of economic conditions and quality of life in communities affected by hazardous waste sites, prevention of future releases of hazardous substances, and advances in science and technology. SME announces 2014 Officers and Board of Directors.

Director of the federal Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office has been elected to lead SME as it continues its new strategic direction and brand position. Michael F. Molnar, FSME, CMfgE, PE, was sworn in as the 2014 president of the 81-year-old organization dedicated to advancing manufacturing and attracting future generations. ASTM Standard helps assure implantable medical device safety.

December 17, 2013

ASTM WK19883, Test Method for Conducting and Evaluating Galvanic Corrosion Tests of Medical Implant Devices, is being developed by Subcommittee F04.15 on Material Test Methods. Cardiovascular, orthopedic, neurovascular, and dental implants will be evaluated using this standard. Making sure these devices do not experience galvanic corrosion helps assure they are biocompatible and can function as intended in the human body without degrading or eliciting an unwanted response. ASTM International Committee D13 on Textiles will celebrate its 100th anniversary with reception and dinner on January 27, 2014 in Houston, TX, where D13 will be meeting from January 27–29 during ASTM January Committee Week. Events scheduled for this anniversary event include entertainment, awards ceremony, cocktail reception, and dinner.
