First Group of Veterans completes GSTW program.

The Manufacturing Institute, in partnership with GE, Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, Alcoa Inc., Boeing, and Lockheed Martin, celebrated accomplishments of the first group of U.S. veterans to complete classes from the Get Skills to Work program. With an estimated 600,000 open manufacturing jobs across America, GSTW is joining major manufacturers and educators to help close the skills gap through training and skills matching. Flex-Grid System prevents optical network traffic jams.

Researchers from Spain and Japan have achieved traffic control for connections in optical networks by using flexible-grid dynamic network management system, which combines OpenFlow controller and stateful path computation element. Controller uses protocol that allows behavior of network device to be remotely configured, while PCE finds network routes between endpoints. AASHTO Issues Praise for proposed transportation funding levels.

AASHTO expressed strong support for proposed transportation funding levels in Senate's version of continuing resolution that would fund government operations through September 2013. In comment, AASHTO executive director Bud Wright said resolution "provides for the full funding of all the programs included in MAP-21" and added that continuing resolution recognizes U.S. economic recovery is dependent on MAP-21 funding levels and that "now is not the time to deviate from those levels." Comments Sought on ISO field of activity on water re-use.

Standardization Administration of China (SAC) submitted proposal for new field of technical activity on water re-use. Proposal cancels and replaces 2012 proposal regarding creation of new technical activity on re-use of treated wastewater in urban areas. If approved, proposal will be merged with ISO Project Committee (PC) 253, Treated wastewater re-use for irrigation. As U.S. member body to ISO, ANSI invites interested stakeholders to submit comments on proposal by April 19, 2013. Read More

FAA approves Boeing 787 certification plan.

FAA approved Boeing's certification plan for the redesigned 787 battery system, after thoroughly reviewing Boeing’s proposed modifications and company’s plan to demonstrate that system will meet FAA requirements. Certification plan requires series of tests which must be passed before the 787 could return to service. It establishes specific pass/fail criteria, defines parameters that should be measured, prescribes test methodology, and specifies test setup and design. Read More

TRIB to Give Away Retreaded Tires at Mid-America Trucking Show.

Tire Retread and Repair Information Bureau (TRIB) is renewing its "Spot The Retreads" competition at Mid-America Trucking Show, which takes place March 21–23 in Louisville, KY. Participants who correctly identify range of new and retreaded tires will be entered into daily drawings for sets of 8 commercial truck tires, which will be retreaded on participants' own casings. Jan U.S. Manufacturing Tech Orders drop 12.2% from January 2012.

As reported by companies participating in USMTO program, January U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $370.62 million. This total is down 26.5% from December and 12.2% from January 2012. With year-to-date total of $370.62 million, 2013 is down 12.2% compared with 2012. AMT President Douglas K. Woods called drop-off between December and January typical and pointed out "that orders were exceptionally strong at the end of 2012, outperforming much of the broader economy." Read More

PCB Market Report from IPC predicts growth in 2013.

North American PCB Market Report, published by IPC, predicts modest return to growth in North American PCB market in 2013 and also contains market data and 2013 monthly sales forecast for rigid PCBs and flexible circuits. While sales and orders are down slightly for rigid PCBs and positive for flexible circuits, book-to-bill ratios for both segments are strengthening. Order backlogs are lower than average, but finished goods inventories are normal. Digital Video Coding Standard reaches final draft status.

Promoted to status of Final Draft International Standard, ISO/IEC 23008-2 is intended to reduce bit rate required to deliver high-quality digital video to array of technologies and applications. Technical standard was developed by MPEG in collaboration with ITU's Video Coding Experts Group and will succeed MPEG-4 AVC standard. By improving approaches to digital video compression, standard is expected to bolster future of video by reducing demand for bandwidth on overburdened global networks. Read More

Proposed Standard addresses inactivation of enveloped viruses.

ASTM International Committee E55 on Manufacture of Pharmaceutical Products is developing proposed standard that will document set of process steps that can reproducibly inactivate or remove any potential retrovirus in new biological products, particularly antibodies and antibody-like compounds. Once approved, ASTM WK39883, Practice for Process of Inactivation of Enveloped Viruses Using Detergent, will benefit producers of biological drug substances and their patients. Read More
