EPA 2012 TRI shows air pollutants continue to decline.

According to U.S. EPA's annual Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) report, releases of toxic chemicals decreased 12% from 2011–2012. This includes 8% decline in total toxic air releases due to reductions in hazardous air pollutant (HAP) emissions. Data on 2012 shows 3.63 billion lb of toxic chemicals were disposed of or otherwise released into environment through air, water, and land. Between 2011 and 2012, toxic releases into surface water decreased 3% and toxic releases to land decreased 16%. Read More

Expert Says EPA Toxic Substances Rules discourage recycling.

Dr. Brent Grazman, speaking for 2,000+ U.S. electronics manufacturers, brought up industry concerns related to how EPA implemented Section 8 of Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Pointing out how "EPA's treatment of manufacturing byproducts does not reflect sound priorities," Grazman noted how EPA's interpretation of TSCA causes byproducts to be considered as new chemicals if sent for recycling and how that creates compliance burden for substances already regulated under other statutes. Media-Oriented Webinar to offer training on EPA's TRI database.

EPA's Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) program will offer training on release of their 2012 national analysis on February 4, 2014 at 1:00 pm. This will include overview of TRI program, discussion of highlights from most recent TRI data on toxic chemical releases and pollution prevention activities, as well as illustration pertaining to how public can use TRI tools to find out what releases are occurring in their areas. AIA Makes Announcement for 2014 Board appointees.

Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) appointed Michael T. Strianese, Chairman and President and CEO of L-3 Communications, as Chairman of AIA's Board of Governors for 2014. David L. Joyce, President and CEO of GE Aviation, will serve as Vice Chairman for 2014. Reappointments include Marion C. Blakey as President and CEO and Ginette C. Colot as Secretary-Treasurer. Additionally, there were 15 members named for Executive Committee for 2014 and 57 members for Board of Governors for 2014. Read More

ASTM Develops Standard for central vacuum cleaner performance.

ASTM F2826, Test Method for Evaluating the Sustained Air Performance and Exhaust Emissions of Central Vacuum Cleaning Units, was developed by Subcommittee F11.22 on Air Performance. This standard will help manufacturers determine how well their products will perform over time, identify areas in which they might improve their designs, and provide sensible, test-based advertising claims. NFPA Creates Fluid Power Industry Forum at IFPE 2014.

Serving as gathering place for NFPA members and other IFPE attendees, NFPA's booth (S81730) at IFPE 2014 will be available for meetings between industry colleagues and customers. Reception will be held March 5 at 5:00 pm, and booth will be open to help attendees learn about NFPA's activities in support of its strategic plan's focus on workforce, technology, and inclusiveness. EPA Awards Near $9 Million for work on improving water quality.

At 14th National Conference and Global Forum on Science, Policy, and the Environment, U.S. EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy announced Science to Achieve Results (STAR) grants to 4 research institutions for innovative and sustainable water research to manage harmful nutrient pollution. These grants support sustainable water research and demonstration projects consistent with strategy for managing nutrients and active community engagement throughout research process.
