LED Streetlight Design can help curb light pollution.

As reported in OSA's open-access journal Optics Express, team of researchers from Taiwan and Mexico has developed lighting system design that utilizes high-efficiency LEDs and ensures they shine only where needed. This spares surrounding homes and evening sky from unwanted illumination. "High-performance LED street lighting using microlens arrays" co-author Ching-Cherng Sun said system offers adaptability to different street lamp layouts and is based on 3-part lighting fixture. AAMA has published first North America standard for multipoint locking hardware for side-hinged door systems. AAMA 909-13, Voluntary Specification for Cycle Performance and Testing of Side-Hinged Exterior Door Multipoint Locking Hardware establishes minimum performance requirement and test procedure to evaluate durability of multipoint locking door hardware. Test methods and evaluation criteria in AAMA 909 ensure rigorous representation of real-world lock use. Read More

Annual NCC Competition showcases construction talent.

On May 1–2, nearly 1,000 people will gather for National Craft Championships (NCC). Annual event, hosted by Associated Builders and Contractors, pits construction industry's top apprentices and trainees against each other to call attention to construction industry and 21st century job opportunities that are available. Event begins with in-depth, 2.5 hr written exam and continues with 6 hr hands-on performance test. NEMA's April 2013 Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American business conditions indicates continuing improvement in business environment, rising to 66.7 from 65.9 in March. Confidence in future business conditions, however, declined in April but remains firmly in positive territory. Also, EBCI for North American conditions 6 months hence dropped to 80.6 from 90.9 in March. Read More

NIST announces plan to sponsor first cybersecurity FFRDC.

To help the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence address industry's needs more efficiently, NIST will sponsor its first Federally Funded Research and Development Center. FFRDCs are independent nonprofit organizations that operate in public interest and provide a highly efficient way to leverage and rapidly assemble physical resources and scientific and engineering talent, both public and private. RIA releases position on Florida HB 909.

RIA has announced its support of Florida House Bill 909, which addresses the practice of Assignment of Benefits. RIA believes that the use of an AOB is in the best interest of the policy holder, and any prohibition will result in delaying work needed for proper restoration of damage. Current language in HB 909 has the potential to allow insurance providers to remove the rights of consumers to assign benefits within policies and RIA recommends that this language be eliminated in its entirety. EPA Announces Winner of building energy conservation competition.

By demonstrating 52% energy use reduction, Demarest Elementary School in Bloomfield, NJ won EPA's 2012 Energy Star Battle of the Buildings competition. Over 3,000 schools, businesses, and government buildings across USA competed to see which could reduce its energy use by most in one year. Together, this year's competitors cut energy costs by $50+ million, saved 3+ billion kBtus of energy, and reduced annual greenhouse gas emissions equal to amount of electricity used by 43,000+ homes. EPA Proposal targets power plant toxic pollutants discharge.

In accordance with consent decree and in line with requirements under Clean Water Act, U.S. EPA will propose options to help reduce dangerous pollutants, including mercury, arsenic, lead, and selenium, released into America's waterways by coal ash, air pollution control waste, and other waste from steam electric power plants. Proposal includes options for whether and how said waste streams should be treated, and EPA will take comments on all of these options to help inform most appropriate final standard.
