Sujit Ghosh Honored for marine technology standards contribution.

ASTM International Committee F25 on Ships and Marine Technology presented John Nachtsteim Award to Sujit Ghosh, mechanical engineer at U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) in Washington, D.C. Honored for his meritorious contributions to international marine technology standards, Ghosh has been ASTM International and Committee F25 member since 2009 and specializes in ship modification, operation, and maintenance as well as research and development for marine environmental projects. ASTM Committee Approves Standard for accreditation bodies.

ASTM D7495, Specification for Minimum Requirements for Accreditation Bodies That Accredit Agencies Testing and Inspecting Road and Paving Materials, has been developed by Subcommittee D04.95 on Quality Control, Inspection, and Testing Agencies. In addition to definitions of important terms, ASTM D7495 contains guidance on role of personnel at accreditation bodies, accreditation process, proficiency testing requirements, and assessment reports. ANSI/SCTE 186 2012, Product Environmental Requirements for Cable Telecommunications Facilities was created to enhance energy efficiency by defining physical, environmental, electrical, and sustainability requirements. Student Rocket Contest achieves record turnout.

On May 11, students from across the country will meet to decide winner of world's largest student rocket contest. Team America Rocketry Challenge encourages students to advance their education and pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math. In year of record turnout, attracting 725 teams, only top 100 will proceed to compete in final fly-off. Students will compete for national title, more than $60,000 in scholarships, and chance to participate in NASA’s Student Launch Initiative. Read More

EPA SAB Announces Panel to review hydraulic fracturing research.

U.S. EPA's independent Science Advisory Board (SAB) announced formation of its Hydraulic Fracturing Research Advisory panel. Comprising 31 independent experts, this panel will peer review EPA's 2014 draft report of results for its national study on potential health and environmental impacts of hydraulic fracturing on drinking water resources. CDA provides motor management best practices.

By upgrading to more energy-efficient motors, facility managers can improve equipment reliability, increase productivity, and reduce downtime. Working with government and industry-based motor experts, CDA has created comprehensive 3-part Motor Management Program. Michigan Computer Company sentenced for counterfeiting.

April 2, 2013

U.S. District Judge David M. Lawson sentenced Mark Jeffrey Glover to 30 months in prison and a $10,000 fine, and his company, Discount Computers, Inc., a $2 million fine with $10,839 in restitution to Michigan landlord, for trafficking in counterfeit goods and services. DCI was also sentenced for storing and disposing of hazardous waste without a permit. Glover pleaded guilty to charges on his behalf and that of his company in October 2012.

EPA Settlement aims to improve sewer and stormwater systems.

April 2, 2013

U.S. EPA and U.S. Department of Justice announced that the Unified Government of Wyandotte Co. and Kansas City, KS, has agreed to settlement to address unauthorized overflows of untreated raw sewage and to reduce pollution levels in urban stormwater. Settlement requires Unified Government to implement improved operation and maintenance programs for its sewer system, perform initial work to address sewer overflows, and implement improved Storm Water Management Plan. Valve Shipments to grow 3% in 2013.

According to figures released by the Valve Manufacturers Association as part of its annual market forecast, shipments for U.S. industrial valve industry will grow 3%, increasing to nearly $4.3 billion. Increase marks fourth consecutive year of growth following recession, and exceeds industry’s previous 10-year peak in 2008. The membership is optimistic too, according to recent VMA monthly economic survey, which showed that 85% of membership expects 2013 to be better or equal to 2012. Read More
