EPA Proposal targets power plant toxic pollutants discharge.

In accordance with consent decree and in line with requirements under Clean Water Act, U.S. EPA will propose options to help reduce dangerous pollutants, including mercury, arsenic, lead, and selenium, released into America's waterways by coal ash, air pollution control waste, and other waste from steam electric power plants. Proposal includes options for whether and how said waste streams should be treated, and EPA will take comments on all of these options to help inform most appropriate final standard. IREC updates Model Interconnection Procedures for power grid.

IREC update to Model Interconnection Procedures addresses Pre-Application Report for developers, use of location-specific criteria during interconnections, establishing timeframes for technical criteria during Supplemental Review Process, and electronic signatures. Update also includes footnotes with key provisions and information on state alternatives. Procedures specify technical requirements, timeframes, fees, and review process for connecting renewable energy systems to utility grid. Read More

NIST to hold second cybersecurity workshop.

On May 29-31, NIST is holding second of 4 planned workshops to develop voluntary framework to reduce cybersecurity risks for critical infrastructure. During spring and summer workshops, attendees will be asked to identify, refine, and guide the many interrelated considerations, challenges, and efforts needed to build framework. Participants in working sessions will analyze and discuss framework's initial inputs, including RFI responses and preliminary analysis conducted by NIST. Read More

Demand Bumps Up WESTEC Expo Date to October of 2013.

While previously scheduled as spring 2014 event, WESTEC will now take place October 15–17, 2013 at Los Angeles Convention Center due to increased industry demand and participant feedback. Christine Longroy, WESTEC event manager, noted American manufacturing sector's "renewed strength and economic vitality" and expressed desire to capitalize on this progress. IPC Releases PCB Industry Results for March 2013.

According to March 2013 findings from IPC's North American PCB Statistical Program, total North American PCB shipments and bookings were down 2.1% and 2.3%, respectively, from March 2012. Year to date, PCB industry shipments and bookings were down, respectively, 4.4% and 5.1%. Compared to previous month, PCB shipments and bookings saw respective increases of 20.0% and 22.2%. Book-to-bill ratio for North American PCB industry continued to strengthen in March, reaching 1.08. Read More

BIO responds to white paper on Renewable Fuel Standard.

In letter addressing House Energy & Commerce Committee’s white paper, "Agricultural Sector Impacts," Brent Erickson wrote, "Congress established the RFS to encourage the use of existing biofuels and the development of advanced biofuels in order to reduce our reliance on the rising cost and price volatility of foreign oil. Therefore, it is crucial we maintain the RFS in order to spur on alternative energy production to stabilize and lower both energy and food costs." Read More

ANSI President Signs MoU to support U.S.-Ecuadorian cooperation.

Formalizing standardization activities cooperation commitment, ANSI and Instituto Ecuatoriano de Normalización (INEN), Ecuador’s national standards body, signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in support of greater U.S.-Ecuadorian cooperation. Under this agreement, ANSI and INEN will work to develop mutually supportive positions related to international standardization, encourage dialogue between Ecuadorian and U.S. experts on standards activities, and exchange senior management visits. U.S. EPA announced 4 winners of Campus RainWorks Challenge, which was created to inspire next generation of landscape architects, planners, and engineers to develop green infrastructure systems that reduce stormwater pollution and support sustainable communities. Comprised of undergraduate and graduate students working with faculty advisor, winners included University of Florida; Illinois Institute of Technology; University of Arizona; and Missouri University of Science and Technology. EPA Continues Climate Change Conversation for Earth Day.

In celebration of Earth Day, U.S. EPA expanded conversation on climate change through public engagement and education concerning importance of protecting air, water, and land. Activities included announcement of District Sustainability Award and honorees for Green Ribbon Schools program, Earth Day event at Union Station, and announcement of Campus RainWorks Challenge winners, focused on stormwater infrastructure. NREL teams with Navy to cut energy use.

During first phase of partnership, NREL worked to identify what technologies would help meet Navy energy goals, along with best locations to demonstrate them. Eight technologies were chosen with roughly half in Hawaii and other half in Guam. Technologies being installed fall into 3 general categories: advanced HVAC, building efficiency, and advanced renewables and facility integration. Final phase will be to report on technologies and help transition them to other sites and commercial market. Read More

At ANTEC® 2013, SPE installed Jon Ratzlaff, technical services manager for Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP, as President. Ratzlaff has been SPE member since 1995, is SPE Certified Plastics Technologist, and is an author of SPE Injection Molding Technicians Toolbox guide. Society also named Vijay B. Boolani as President-elect, who is President of Boolani Engineering Corporation in Mumbai, India. Boolani, SPE member since 1981, was Chair of ANTEC® Mumbai held in December 2012. Read More

MESA North American Conference sees launch of TCS's PIB.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) launched its first Plant in a Box (PIB) offering during MESA 2013 North American Conference. According to TCS, this offering, which leverages such models as MESA's B2MML and ISA 95, is intended to help manufacturers rapidly set up, operate, optimize, and replicate lean manufacturing plant business systems. ASTM D7568, Specification for Polyethylene-Based Structural-Grade Plastic Lumber for Outdoor Applications, presents all requirements needed so that plastic lumber materials can be appropriately specified for uses, such as main and secondary framing members, in which improved mechanical properties are essential. Standard applies to solid, rectangular SGPL products in which polyethylene resin (non cross-linked) is continuous phase and represents at least 50% of product by weight. S. Joe Bhatia, president and CEO of ANSI, was elected to 2-year term as president of Pan American Standards Commission during group's annual General Assembly, held April 21-26, 2013.
