NEMA-Backed Smart Grid Study passes House Committee.

U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security adopted Payne amendment, which is backed by NEMA and will result in assessment of actions needed to expand and strengthen capabilities of electrical power system to prepare for, respond to, mitigate, and recover from natural disaster or cyberattack. Specifically, amendment directs National Research Council to conduct study on resiliency and reliability of USA's power grid and related issues. Read More

FAA Proposes Civil Penalty against Sierra Academy of Aeronautics.

FAA is proposing $204,050 civil penalty against Sierra Academy of Aeronautics of Atwater, CA for allegedly operating 9 Cessna 152 airplanes for total of 358 flights when they were not in compliance with Federal Aviation Regulations. Allegedly, Sierra mechanics failed to inspect planes' seat locking pins according to requirements of an Airworthiness Directive (AD). Also, FAA alleges Sierra improperly recorded maintenance log entry for one of said aircraft. Read More

EPA Requests Input on hazardous waste management in retail sector.

February 14, 2014

Beginning in February 2014, Solvent Wipe rule from EPA will provide new exclusions for shop towels and wipes if they are managed correctly. Environmental Resource Center's Solvent Wipe Rule webcast aims to help understand answers to critical issues, such as applicability to cloth and paper wipes and rags, permissible types of solvents, towels that contain characteristic hazardous waste, and more. Course will be held from 1 to 2 pm Eastern Time on February 13 and 21 and March 7 and 19. Read More

AIM Europe hosts executive roundtable in Stuttgart.

On February 25, AIM will bring together international leaders in the automatic identification and data capture industry for the inaugural meeting of the newly created AIM Europe. FAA Proposes Civil Penalty against Amazon Fulfillment Services.

February 14, 2014

FAA is proposing $78,000 civil penalty against Amazon Fulfillment Services of North Las Vegas, NV for allegedly violating U.S. Department of Transportation Hazardous Materials Regulations with its shipment of one quart of high gloss enamel paint on August 29, 2013. Workers discovered leaking paint had soaked through shipping box, and investigators determined shipment was not accompanied by proper shipping papers. Also, box was not marked, labeled, or packed in accordance with regulations. Read More

Third volume of ASTM International's STP 1559, Fatigue and Fracture of Metallic Medical Materials and Devices, includes 11 peer-reviewed papers on fatigue behavior of nitinol SMA's and influence of residual surface stress as well as influence of inclusions and test speed on long-life performance. Other topics deal with biomechanical loading and fatigue characterization of orthopedic devices, surface modifications on fatigue/corrosion behavior of Ti-6Al-4V, and fracture toughness of Ti-MMC.
