ELFF May Confidence Index shows improved optimism.

May 2013 Monthly Confidence Index for Equipment Finance Industry revealed market confidence of 56.7 over April's 54.0. Number reflects participant's increasing optimism despite concerns over economy and impact of federal policies on capital expenditures. Also, 9.7% of executives think business conditions will improve, 25.8% expect more access to capital, and 19.4% expect more hiring over next 4 months. Survey also shows 32.3% of respondents predict economic improvement over next 6 months. Read More

Association Connecting Electronics Industries® and PCB Libraries, Inc. have added PCB Libraries Footprint Expert land pattern calculation tool, with library of more than 5,000 components, to IPC-7351B. Library documentation conforms to engineering rules established within standard, while tool can automatically output land patterns into various CAD formats. ANSI Chairman Pauley has been inducted into Hall of Distinction.

University of Kentucky (UK) College of Engineering named James T. Pauley, senior VP of external affairs and government relations at Schneider Electric USA and chair of ANSI's Board of Directors, to its Hall of Distinction based on his career achievements and outstanding character. Established in 1992, Hall of Distinction, recognizes past graduates to encourage similar success among current students. Pauley graduated in 1986 with bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. Read More

ANSI EESCC Workshops to cover energy efficiency standardization.

Consisting of 5 workgroups, ANSI Energy Efficiency Standardization Coordination Collaborative (EESCC) will hold workshops in Washington, DC on June 4, 11, 18, and 20 and July 25, from 10:00am to 4:00pm EST. Meetings will begin gap analysis and roadmapping phases of standardizing energy efficiency in built environments. Interested stakeholders must register by Tuesday, May 28. First draft of roadmap is expected by October 2013, with final version anticipated for publication by mid-2014. Read More

ASC to foster Environmental Product Declaration development.

ASTM will be collaborating with industry to develop Environmental Product Declarations across 90+ industry markets they support, including sealants. ASC will partner with ASTM to raise awareness of this effort, educate industry on value of Type III EPDs, and engage industry in developing Product Category Rules. ASTM's role will be to bring diversification to stakeholders involved on PCR development team, and guide process forward as PCR begin to develop foundation for Life Cycle Assessments. Read More

Crowd Funding Campaign reminds young Americans of opportunities.

Aerospace Industries Association, in partnership with Challenger Center for Space Science Education, sponsored crowd funding campaign to place trailer before Star Trek Into Darkness, beginning May 17, to educate public on human spaceflight programs that are currently underway. This trailer will play in 50+ cities nationwide. According to AIA President and CEO Marion C. Blakey, this project aims to counteract "widespread misperception" that U.S. human spaceflight program is over. Read More

Proposed standard ASTM WK39806, Practice for the Capacity of Ion Exchange Oxygen Removal Cartridge, will provide comprehensive approach to analyzing oxygen removal cartridges. Specifically, this standard, being developed by Subcommittee D19.08 on Membranes and Ion Exchange Materials, will help determine exchange capacity of ion exchange oxygen removal cartridge used to remove dissolved oxygen from water. EPA announces selected grant recipients.

U.S. EPA announced selection of 240 recipients recommended to receive $62.5 million in grants to protect people's health and the environment in local communities. These investments, funded by EPA’s Brownfields Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund, and Cleanup (ARC) grants, target under-served and economically disadvantaged neighborhoods, providing funding necessary to assess, cleanup, and redevelop contaminated properties, boost local economies, and leverage jobs. EPA Announces Grants for reduction of diesel engine emissions.

U.S. EPA announced availability of up to $9 million in grants through National Clean Diesel Funding Assistance Program (DERA) for Fiscal Year 2013 for new projects to reduce emissions from existing fleet of diesel engines. States, tribes, local governments, and non-profits are eligible. Projects can reduce air pollution from school buses, transit buses, heavy-duty trucks, marine engines, locomotives, and other diesel engines. Closing date for receipt of proposals is June 25, 2013. During IPC Electronic System Technologies Conference, May 21-22, electronics professionals will have new venue for collaboration on IPC standards. IPC’s Requirements for Structural Enclosure Task Group will evaluate submissions for IPC-A-630, Acceptability Standard for the Design, Manufacture, Inspection and Testing of Electronic Enclosures. IPC and the Surface Mount Technology Association announced the finalized agreement to co-locate the SMTA International Conference and Exhibition with the IPC Fall Standards Development Committee Meetings for 2013, 2014, and 2015.
