USA Construction Industry added 13,000 jobs in June.

According to July 5 report by Department of Labor, USA's construction industry unemployment rate fell to 9.8% for first time since September 2007 with the addition of 13,000 jobs in June. Industry has added 190,000 jobs, 3.4% increase since June 2012. Every major category of construction experienced gains in employment. Across all industries, USA added 195,000 jobs as private sector expanded by 202,000 jobs and public sector shrunk by 7,000 jobs. Read More

EPA warns against use of refrigerant substitutes.

July 10, 2013

U.S. EPA is warning homeowners, propane manufacturers and sellers, home improvement contractors, and air conditioning technicians of potential safety hazards related to the use of propane or other unapproved refrigerants in home air conditioning systems. At this time, EPA has not approved use of propane refrigerant or other hydrocarbon refrigerants in any type of air conditioner. Use of these substances poses potential fire or explosion hazard for homeowners and service technicians. Read More

Nonresidential Construction Spending rises 0.1% in May.

July 9, 2013

According to July 2 report by U.S. Commerce Department, total construction spending, which includes nonresidential and residential spending, was up 0.5% for month and 5.4% from May 2012. ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu noted that “The economy has now entered its fifth year of economic recovery and many economic forecasters expect an acceleration of growth later this year and in 2014." Basu also noted the hindering effects of ongoing sequestration. Read More

Aluminum Association announced addition of 3 companies to organization's membership. Scotwood Industries, Page Transportation, and Alloy Technology Innovations, each of which provides goods or services to aluminum industry, will join as Associate members, bringing total membership to 98, consisting of 51 producer and 47 associate members. EPA strengthens Energy Star requirements.

Under EPA's new standards, Energy Star certified residential refrigerators and freezers will use at least 10% less energy than models meeting 2014 federal minimum efficiency standards. Certain Energy Star refrigerators and freezers with "connected" features will provide new convenience and energy-saving opportunities, allowing consumers to view real-time energy use, receive energy-related messages, such as an alert when door has been left open, and manage appliance settings remotely. EPA reaches agreement with SunCoke Energy for violations.

July 8, 2013

SunCoke Energy Inc. and two of its subsidiaries have agreed to pay $1.995 million to resolve alleged Clean Air Act violations of emission limits at the Gateway Energy and Coke plant in Granite City, IL, and the Haverhill Coke plant in Franklin Furnace, OH. Companies will also spend $255,000 on a lead abatement project in southern Illinois to reduce lead hazards in owner-occupied low income residences with priority given to families with young children or pregnant women. NAM Comments on delay of ACA implementation.

Administration announced, via blog post, it would delay collection of data needed to enforce employer-mandate under Affordable Care Act (ACA). NAM Vice President of Human Resources Policy Joe Trauger called this postponement "good news" but pointed out that this does not "halt or reverse the cost increases absorbed by employers and employees since the adoption of the law – nor does it prevent future increases."
