RIA recognizes Phoenix Award winners.

At the recent Leadership Summit & Industry Expo in Las Vegas, Kelmann Restoration received the Phoenix Award for Innovation in Restoration, while Platinum Restoration received the Phoenix Award for Innovation in Reconstruction. Kelmann was recognized for its innovative work following the restoration of the St. Alphonsus Parish and School after a fire. Platinum Restoration was chosen for their restoration of an historical home built in 1898. Read More

LIA launches medical laser safety awareness training.

Available online, LIA's Medical Laser Safety Awareness course is a 2-hour learning experience that will give healthcare personnel a complete overview of the safe use of these devices. With LIA's interface, Medical Laser Safety Officers can also train their employees without having to send them away to specialized course or bring in an expensive expert. Course is based on ANSI Z136.3 standard Safe Use of Lasers in Health Care, which is recognized by OSHA and The Joint Commission. Read More

Nominations Sought for 2014 ANSI Board of Directors.

ANSI invites all members to recommend qualified candidates for 2014 ANSI Board of Directors. Nominations are due by June 3, 2013 and are for terms that begin January 1, 2014. Board is responsible for management and control of activities, property, and affairs of ANSI, including its strategic direction, annual budget, as well as scope of responsibilities of Board and Institute Committees, Councils, and Boards. David Stevens of Tire Retread & Repair Information Bureau (TRIB) will be present "An Overview of the Global Retreading Industry and the Use of Advanced Technology to Improve Retread Quality" as featured speaker at 4th Annual China International Rubber Tire and Auto Accessory Exhibition. To be held from May 15–17, 2013, this event will take place in Guangrao, China, which according to Stevens, holds growing importance as Chinese tire industry continues to grow. RIA's Martin L. King Award is presented to Larry Holder, CR.

At recent Leadership Summit and Industry Expo in Las Vegas, NV, RIA presented Martin L. King Award to Larry Holder, CR, of BELFOR USA. Holder is BELFOR's national safety director and heads Environmental Services division. In restoration industry for over 20 yr, he served on task force that created RIA Glossary of Standardized Terms, and on RIA Restoration Council. Holder currently serves on association's task force creating first restoration industry accounting guideline. Read More

During its recent Leadership Summit and Industry Expo, RIA honored Tracy Bachtell of Paul Davis Restoration with its 2013 Golden Quill award. Eligible articles are reviewed by panel of judges who select winning article based on degree of usefulness of information to readers; composition and clarity of article; and style or personality conveyed by author. BIO shares US Trade Representative's international patent concerns.

Following Office of U.S. Trade Representative's (USTR) release of Special 301 Report, BIO shared concern over weak IP enforcement efforts of foreign nations. Report details failings of India, China, Brazil, and Canada, among others, to provide adequate IP protection for biotechnology companies, or their adding of bureaucratic hurdles to patentability. Organization encouraged USTR, in recent Special 301 Submission, to perform out-of-cycle reviews of these countries' patent systems.  Read More

NIST transfers time signals over wireless optical channel.

By bouncing eye-safe laser pulses off mirror on hillside, researchers at NIST have transferred ultra precise time signals through open air with precision equivalent to "ticking" of world's best next-generation atomic clocks. Described in Nature Photonics, demonstration shows how next-generation atomic clocks at different locations could be linked wirelessly to improve geodesy, distribution of time and frequency information, satellite navigation, radar arrays, and other applications. NIST Measurement Tool aids growing MEMS industry.

Introduced by NIST, measurement tool will help device designers, manufacturers, and customers see 8 common dimensional and material property measurements key to device performance. Test chips, Reference Materials 8096 and 8097, are QA tools that enable comparisons of measurements on MEMS devices made with different equipment and by different labs/companies. AWEA Board of Directors names Tom Kiernan as new CEO.

May 6, 2013

American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) Board of Directors, via unanimous vote, announced that Tom Kiernan has been named as Chief Executive Officer. Kiernan has served as President of the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) since 1998 and will assume his new role on May 28. In comment, AWEA Board of Directors Chair Tom Carnahan praised Kiernan's "bipartisan, practical experience at the national and state levels as well as in small, rural communities." Read More

ASABE revises standard for peanut drying systems.

ASABE's revised standard, ASAE S488.1, Energy Efficiency of Peanut Drying Systems, includes updated reference information as noted in most recent periodic review of the document. This is the first revision of the standard since its initial publication in 1990. Wisconsin Utilities will reduce emissions to comply with CAA.

May 6, 2013

U.S. EPA, Department of Justice, and U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Wisconsin announced Clean Air Act settlement with Wisconsin Power and Light Company that will reduce air pollution from 3 coal-fired power plants located near Portage, Sheboygan, and Cassville. WPL and its co-defendants agreed to invest more than $1 billion in pollution control, spend $8.5 million on environmental mitigation projects, and pay civil penalty of $2.45 million to resolve alleged violations of CAA. LED Streetlight Design can help curb light pollution.

As reported in OSA's open-access journal Optics Express, team of researchers from Taiwan and Mexico has developed lighting system design that utilizes high-efficiency LEDs and ensures they shine only where needed. This spares surrounding homes and evening sky from unwanted illumination. "High-performance LED street lighting using microlens arrays" co-author Ching-Cherng Sun said system offers adaptability to different street lamp layouts and is based on 3-part lighting fixture. AAMA has published first North America standard for multipoint locking hardware for side-hinged door systems. AAMA 909-13, Voluntary Specification for Cycle Performance and Testing of Side-Hinged Exterior Door Multipoint Locking Hardware establishes minimum performance requirement and test procedure to evaluate durability of multipoint locking door hardware. Test methods and evaluation criteria in AAMA 909 ensure rigorous representation of real-world lock use. Read More

Annual NCC Competition showcases construction talent.

On May 1–2, nearly 1,000 people will gather for National Craft Championships (NCC). Annual event, hosted by Associated Builders and Contractors, pits construction industry's top apprentices and trainees against each other to call attention to construction industry and 21st century job opportunities that are available. Event begins with in-depth, 2.5 hr written exam and continues with 6 hr hands-on performance test.
