NREL to build solar performance database.

April 22, 2013

NREL has launched initiative to build open-source database of real-world performance from solar facilities across the country. Part of DOE's SunShot Initiative, Open Solar Performance and Reliability Clearinghouse (O-SPaRC) will improve access to capital by enabling credit rating agencies and potential investors to assess underlying risk of asset class. It will also give private market tools to develop investment vehicles such as asset-backed securities and real estate investment trusts. Read More

Manufacturers Hold Cybersecurity at highest priority level.

NAM announced it would key vote in support of H.R. 624, Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA). According to NAM's Aric Newhouse, "Preparation is a critical line of defense from cyber threats, and we believe CISPA will help protect manufacturing jobs and intellectual property." Manufacturers have supported solutions that offer necessary protections and information sharing without adding duplicative regulations that do not improve security. Read More

UVIG announced NREL's Debbie Lew, Greg Brinkman, Maureen Hand, and Trieu Mai received 2013 Annual Achievement Award. UVIG also honored accomplishments of NREL's Brian Parsons. NREL's John Rugh was named 2013 Forest R. McFarland Award Recipient by SAE International, and NREL Research Fellow (Emeritus) Arthur J. Nozik received Heinz Gerischer Award from Europe Section of Electrochemical Society. Additionally, regional chapter of IEEE named NREL an Outstanding Large Company. Read More

Proposed Standard addresses hydrogen fuel quality analysis.

Proposed ASTM International standard, ASTM WK34574, Test Methods for Determination of Organic Halides, Total Non-Methane Hydrocarbons and Formaldehyde in Hydrogen Fuel by Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry, will be used by laboratories to monitor quality of hydrogen fuel for fuel cell vehicles to satisfy requirements of SAE J2719. Proposed test method will allow users to monitor formaldehyde and each hydrocarbon compound at one part per billion. Read More

Developed by ISO Technical Committees 205 and 163, ISO/TR 16344:2012 establishes unambiguous and consistent set of terms, definitions, and symbols for all elements to assess overall energy performance of buildings. Standard includes tables containing relevant concepts and physical quantities, designating energy measures with their corresponding symbols and units, and lists symbols and subscripts that are common to set of International Standards covering energy performance of buildings. ODVA and FDT Group announce work to support CIP networks.

Technical work is underway in FDT Group to develop annex to FDT2 specification for ODVA’s family of CIP Networks. Annex will ensure that support for FDT-compatible Device Type Manager is possible for users of EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, CompoNet, and ControlNet who are also using updates to FDT technology that are included in FDT2. Industrial Ethernet Initiative targets process automation.

Initiative for process automation, launched by ODVA in cooperation with major suppliers to process industry – Cisco Systems, Endress+Hauser, Rockwell Automation, and Schneider Electric – aims to accelerate adoption of industrial Ethernet in process automation. ODVA's first action was to form standing committee to define strategic market requirements for new areas of technical work. It will publish white paper describing ODVA's vision for process automation and resulting technical approach. Vegetable Oils/Fats ID Standard will aid fire investigations.

Subcommittee E30.01 on Criminalistics is developing ASTM WK34571, Test Method for the Extraction and Derivatization of Vegetable Oils and Fats from Fire Debris and Liquid Samples with Analysis by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. Detailing process by which acids can converted to their corresponding methyl esters, this proposed ASTM International standard will aid in fire investigation by facilitating identification of vegetable oil or fat gathered from fire debris. For contributions to SME's professional activities and growth, IPS Corporation senior design engineer Jim Whitehead received 2013 Award of Merit. Whitehead is currently member of Memphis Chapter 105 and began his involvement with SME in 2002 while completing his bachelor's at University of Memphis. AEM Urges International Trade Treaty to cover off-road equipment.

AEM urged that off-road equipment be included in international treaty facilitating export financing, helping small and mid-sized U.S. manufacturers grow their export businesses. Expressing support for expansion of Cape Town Convention, AEM signed letters sent to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry as well as secretary general of UNIDROIT.
