BIO Welcomes Release of final 2013 RFS rules.

In welcoming release of final rule and 2013 Renewable Volume Obligations for Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), BIO noted how EPA's carefully balanced implementation of RFS provides advanced biofuel developers and investors with confidence that if they can produce advanced and cellulosic biofuels they will have market access. BIO's Brent Erickson also relayed importance of EPA's continued stance against outside legal and political challenges to undermine RFS. Read More

ASTM Developing Standard for precast concrete retaining wall units.

August 8, 2013

ASTM WK38192, Specification for Wet-Cast Precast Modular Block Retaining Wall Units, is being developed by Subcommittee C27.20. According to C27 member Clint Hines, "This standard will set requirements for dimensional tolerances of individual block units and lifting device requirements for improved safety in handling and installation." Hines also noted this standard will, among other things, eliminate use of reconstituted ready-mixed concrete in production of block units. Read More

ASTM Symposium covers graphite testing for nuclear applications.

Graphite Testing for Nuclear Applications: The Significance of Test Specimen Volume and Geometry and the Statistical Significance of Test Specimen Population (September 19–20) will focus on testing of as-manufactured graphite. EPA awards $2 million to small businesses.

August 8, 2013

EPA awarded more than $2 million in contracts to 7 small businesses to develop sustainable technologies that will help protect human health and the environment. Small Business Innovation Research program funded 25 research proposals from small businesses for 6 months through last year’s Phase I contracts of $80,000. Following peer-review process, 7 Phase I recipients are being awarded Phase II contracts for up to $300,000, supporting further development and commercialization of their technology. Read More

AAMA Specification streamlines fenestration industry BIM process.

AAMA 912-13, Voluntary Specification for Non-Residential Fenestration Building Information Modeling (BIM), identifies and outlines minimum requirements for Design intent (DI) models and Project execution and coordination (PEC) models. Intended to be referenced in other industry standards, contract documents, proposals, and marketing materials, specification should, according to AAMA BIM Task Group chair Dan Luoma, "provide a more streamline BIM process for the fenestration industry." NEMA publishes dimensional requirements for plugs/receptacles.

NEMA has published ANSI/NEMA WD 6-2012 Wiring Devices—Dimensional Specifications, which covers dimensional requirements for plugs and receptacles up to 60 A and 600 V. Substantive changes to current document include introduction of marking for automatically controlled receptacles adopted by NEMA and mandated by National Electrical Code®, and dimensions for single and dual 2 1/8 in. mounting plates. Dr. Webster is Professor and Chair in the Department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials at North Dakota State University. ASTM International is launching initiative to develop standards for body armor worn by military and criminal justice personnel. This effort is supported by National Institute of Justice, U.S. Army Program Executive Office – Soldier, and NIST, who are collaborating to harmonize existing ASTM body armor standards, especially test methods, where practical. EPA strengthens chemical assessment process.

EPA announced changes to its Integrated Risk Information System Program to improve scientific foundation of assessments, increase transparency in the program and process, and allow agency to produce more IRIS assessments each year. EPA proposes rule to modernize Clean Water Act reporting.

August 6, 2013

EPA's e-reporting rule would make facility-specific information, such as inspection and enforcement history, pollutant monitoring results, and other data required by permits accessible to public through EPA's website. EPA estimates that, once rule is fully implemented, 46 states and the Virgin Island Territory that are authorized to administer National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System program will collectively save $29 million each year by switching from paper to electronic reporting. NREL Report details solar land-use requirements.

Published by NREL, Land-use Requirements for Solar Power Plants in the United States is based on actual land-use practices from existing solar facilities. Lead author Sean Ong gathered data from 72% of the solar power plants installed or under construction in USA. Findings include that solar power plant providing all electricity for 1,000 homes would require 32 acres of land. Lincoln Electric Company becomes RIA Certified Robot Integrator.

Lincoln Electric (Cleveland, OH) received Certified Robot Integrator designation from RIA. To become fifteenth Certified Robot Integrator, Lincoln Electric had to go through on-site audit, safety training, and hands-on testing of key personnel. Certification, according to RIA President Jeff Burnstein, helps integrators looking to showcase their capabilities and experience to users and suppliers as well as benchmark their own processes against best industry practices.
