EPA calls for Green Chemistry Challenge Award nominations.

EPA is asking companies or institutions to nominate their innovative technologies for the 2014 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards. Agency is looking for nominations that have developed safer chemical processes and products that may reduce the generation and use of chemicals that are hazardous to people’s health and the environment. EPA anticipates recognizing 5 award winning green chemistry technologies this fall. LIA releases revised standard to promote safer facilities.

Updated for first time in 7 years, American National Standard for Safe Use of Lasers will be available through LIA. ANSI Z136.1 guides safe use of lasers and laser systems by defining control measures for 7 laser hazard classifications. Some highlights include: 19 new definitions of key terms; increase in allowed exposure levels for wavelengths between 1.2–1.4 µm; and updated section on "special qualifications" for medical-related exposures to include MPEs expressed in terms of illuminance. Jeff Tomitz joins NEMA as VP of finance and administration.

Coming to NEMA with 30 years of experience, more than 10 of which has been in public accounting, Jeff Tomitz is responsible for overseeing financial activities of the organization and human resource management. He will maintain budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting, as well as improve internal controls. Tomitz principally served the not-for-profit community within the Baltimore–D.C. metro corridor, Recently, he served as CFO for National Quality Forum and American Council of Education. Read More

SME Education Foundation supports ITA, IMTTA with scholarships.

In support of Italian Trade Agency's (ITA) Call for Papers for 2014 Italian Machine Tool Technology Awards (IMTTA), SME Education Foundation will award scholarships to top winners. Winners of Fifth IMTTA, selected as having the best papers, will be awarded 2-week trip to Italy with activities scheduled from June 29 to July 12, 2014. Foundation scholarship is in addition to aforementioned trip. Papers should be submitted in electronic format by May 9, 2014. Read More

ATA welcomes electronic logging device proposal.

March 20, 2014

ATA officials welcomed proposal by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to mandate use of electronic logging devices in commercial trucks as potential improvement for highway safety. ATA successfully advocated for inclusion of provision mandating ELDs in most recent highway authorization law. ATA has a few concerns with some details relating to supporting document retention requirements and grandfathering of existing devices, among others, and will address those with FMCSA going forward.
