ASTM and NAMII sign memorandum of understanding.

Memorandum of understanding (MOU), signed by ASTM International and National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute (NAMII), outlines framework of cooperation regarding development of ASTM standards for additive manufacturing. Specifically, MOU states that standards for additive manufacturing will be developed by ASTM International Committee F42 on Additive Manufacturing Technologies. NAMII will participate in ASTM process by providing technical expertise as well as technical content. Read More

Washington Governor to deliver keynote at BIO Convention in China.

As announced by BIO, Washington State Governor Jay Inslee will deliver keynote address on November 12 at third annual BIO® Convention in China (November 11–13, 2013). Beijing-based event, bringing together biotechnology executives, pharmaceutical companies, and investment firms, will foster exploration of business opportunities within China’s emerging biotech sector. TRFA Annual Meeting increases attendance by 14%.

TRFA began its second decade with 14% jump in meeting attendance, breaking previous attendance record for 2012's 10th Anniversary event. Meeting featured keynote address by Dr. Dean Webster on "Improving the Sustainability of Thermosets Using Renewables," as well as presentation of 11 technical papers focused on latest products and advanced techniques. SPE names finalists of Automotive Innovation Awards.

SPE's Automotive Division announced finalists for its 43rd-annual Automotive Innovation Awards Competition, the largest recognition event in the automotive and plastics industries. Nominations were first subjected to pre-qualification review, and then were presented before panel of industry experts. Some finalist innovations include semi-convertible sunroof system, window glazing system, all-olefinic liftgate, decklid trim with self-locking feature, and high-heat turbo EGR sleeve. Read More

Veto by Governor Brown incurs BIO's disappointment.

BIO was disappointed to learn that CA Governor Jerry Brown vetoed legislation, Senate Bill 598, designed to address regulatory issues related to interchangeability of biological medicines. Vetoed bill aligned with all 5 BIO principles on biologic substitution, properly preserved patient access to accurate prescription information, maintained incentives for innovation, and promoted competitive market for biologic therapies. IPC Examines On-Shoring and its impact on North America.

In its 2013 update to On-Shoring in the Electronics Industry: Trends and Outlook for North America, IPC confirms that companies have continued to locate new operations in North America and are returning some existing operations to region. This study also finds more on-shoring is planned for coming year. U.S. Cutting Tool Consumption rises 1.3% in August 2013.

According to U.S. Cutting Tool Institute and AMT, August 2013 U.S. cutting tool consumption totaled $161.7 million as reported by companies participating in Cutting Tool Market Report (CTMR) collaboration — up 1.3% from July but down 13.2% from August 2012. Year-to-date shipments are $1.33 billion, which is down 7.9% from same period in 2012. USCTI president Dave Povich pointed out modest growth in 2013 that purchasing manager surveys point to uptick heading towards 2014. Read More

VMA releases Employment Snapshot Report.

During briefing at its 75th Anniversary Annual Meeting, VMA reported that the valve industry employs 50% more people than a decade ago and is expecting to add many more this year. VMA unveiled the Employment Snapshot Report and discussed new trends affecting economic outlook of valve industry. More than half of responding member companies reported their domestic hiring was growing 5% this year. Nearly 1/5 expected growth up to 10% and another fifth is planning to grow their ranks up to 16%. Read More

Standard addresses manufactured graphite/carbon electrodes.

NEMA has published NEMA CG 1-2013 Manufactured Graphite/Carbon Electrodes, a standard that adopts the requirements of two international standards—IEC 60529 and IEC/TR 62157—concerning dimensions and designations of graphite and carbon electrodes used in arc furnace applications. All requirements in CG 1-1999 were replaced with requirements from IEC 60529 and IEC/TR 62157. Read More

ASTM Roofing Committee developing sustainability standards.

Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing, through Subcommittee D08.24 on Sustainability, is developing ASTM WK26599, Guide for Design of Sustainable, Low-Slope Roofing Systems. Standard describes process by which designer or specifier looks at demands and factors that roofing system must be capable of withstanding. External factors include wind, weather, rainfall, chemical exposure, and foot traffic. Building pressurization and humidification are among internal factors to be considered. Read More
