ASQ Report says gaps remain in management of quality.

Thirty years after U.S. business embraced the quality movement, research by ASQ shows there are significant gaps in the governance and management models of quality, and the availability and use of metrics in manufacturing and service-based organizations worldwide. With data collected from 1,991 organizations in 22 countries, ASQ Global State of Quality Research: Discoveries 2013 report also shows disparities between manufacturing and services in quality management frameworks and training. NEMA applauds Senator Wyden.

NEMA applauds Sen. Wyden for urging the administration to commit federal agencies to meeting its 2013 goal of retrofitting federal buildings with energy efficient technologies. According to Senator Wyden (D-OR), Chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Energy Savings Performance Contracts are a good deal for the government. BIO Applauds Senate Agriculture Committee for draft Farm Bill.

BIO thanked Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Thad Cochran (R-MS) and other Senate Agriculture Committee members for including mandatory funding for Energy Title programs as well as eligibility for renewable chemicals in draft Farm Bill reauthorization legislation. NEMA Publishes Standard on single-ended metal halide lamps.

On behalf of American National Standard Lighting Group (ANSLG), NEMA published ANSI/ANSLG C78.43 American National Standard for Electric Lamps—Single-Ended Metal Halide Lamps. This standard, to ensure interchangeability and safety, poses physical and electrical requirements for single-ended metal halide lamps operated on 60 Hz ballasts. Also, standard provides basis for electrical requirements for ballasts and ignitors as well as lamp-related requirements for luminaires. Read More

USDA and EPA Release Report on honey bee health.

Released by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and U.S. EPA, scientific report on honey bee health states that there are multiple factors – including parasites and disease, genetics, poor nutrition, and pesticide exposure – contributing to honey bee colony declines. Acting EPA Administrator Bob Perciasepe called this "a complex problem" and affirmed EPA's commitment to continuing to work with USDA, researchers, beekeepers, growers, and public to address this challenge. EPA to Award Over Half Billion to NY/NJ areas impacted by Sandy.

U.S. EPA will provide grants of $340 million to New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and $229 million to New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection for improvements to wastewater and drinking water treatment facilities impacted by Hurricane Sandy. This funding will give both states capacity to reduce risks of flood damage and increase resiliency of wastewater and drinking water facilities as to withstand effects of severe storms similar to Sandy. IPC APEX EXPO® 2012 has been recognized by Trade Show News Network (TSNN) as one of top 250 trade shows in USA. Current ranking of 166 marks improvement from 2011's rank of 189. According to IPC's Alicia Balonek, 2012 show surpassed its participant and exhibition goals and marked 26% increase in attendance over 2011. Construction Spending Report shows nonresidential spending slip.

May 10, 2013

According to May 1 construction spending report by U.S. Census Bureau, nonresidential construction spending declined 2.9% in March. Year-over-year total nonresidential construction spending is down 1.2%, and total nonresidential construction spending stands at $555.08 billion on annual basis. Respectively, private and public segments registered monthly declines of 1.5% and 4.5% in construction spending. Residential construction spending was up 0.7% for month and 17.8% year-over-year. Interim procedural guide by American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) provides documented, optional process to extend current, unexpired AAMA product certification to any edition of AAMA/WDMA(/CSA) 101/I.S.2(/A440), North American Fenestration Standard/Specification for windows, doors, and skylights (NAFS), for 2 years for products that have had no changes. EPA Takes Action against violators of RRP rule.

EPA announced 17 enforcement actions for violations of Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) rule, which protects homeowners and tenants from dangerous lead dust that can be left behind after renovation, repair, and painting work. Specifically, actions include 14 administrative settlements assessing civil penalties of up to $23,000 and 3 administrative complaints seeking civil penalties of up to statutory maximum of $37,500 per violation. Paper in Optics Express describes on-site asbestos detector.

Researchers from University of Hertfordshire in UK have developed and tested prototype of portable, real-time airborne asbestos detector as described in "Real-time detection of airborne asbestos by light scattering from magnetically re-aligned fibers" paper, which was published in Optics Express. If commercialized, this tool could help workers in commercial and residential buildings identify if they have inadvertently disturbed asbestos fibers into air. Read More
