ASTM Sports Equipment Standard covers wrestling mats.

ASTM F2983, Guide for Manufacturers for Labeling and Care Instructions for Wrestling Mats, provides list of required information to be placed on labels that are affixed to wrestling mats, including identification and contact information for manufacturer and instructions stating that mat is only to be used under supervision of qualified instructors. Standard also provides requirements for additional product literature that can be placed directly on packaging for mat or included with it. Read More

SPE Automotive Division selects 2013 Hall of Fame winner.

First North American implementation of an integrated front-end module system used on 1996 model year Ford® Taurus® and Mercury® Sable® sedans produced by Ford Motor Co. was selected as 2013 Hall of Fame winner in SPE's 43rd annual Automotive Innovation Awards Competition. To be considered for award, automotive-plastic component must have been in continuous service in some form for at least 15 years and preferably have been widely adopted within automotive or ground-transportation industries. Tulkoff, of DfR Solutions, is among the experts who will address wide range of factors impacting reliability at IPC Conference on Solder and Reliability, Nov 13–14. ASTM Road and Paving Committee honors Stuart Schwotzer.

Committee D04 on Road and Paving Materials presented ASTM International Prevost Hubbard Award to Stuart Schwotzer, senior geologist in Construction Services Division at Bowser-Morner Laboratories in Dayton, OH, for his contributions to development of standards for road and paving materials. ASTM International member since 1978, Schwotzer specializes in testing and evaluation of aggregates used in construction. He has also held various roles at Ohio DoT in Columbus. Read More

L. David Suits, executive director of the North American Geosynthetic Society, Albany, NY, has received A. Ivan Johnson Outstanding Achievement Award from ASTM International Committee D18 on Soil and Rock. Award is presented to member whose efforts have produced particular outstanding result or significant contribution to work of committee. Bolivian Government Accepts ASTM Standards for amusement rides.

At amusement ride safety seminar in La Paz, Bolivia on August 23 of 2013, Bolivian officials announced acceptance of amusement ride safety standards developed by ASTM International Committee F24 on Amusement Rides and Devices. Seminar focused on amusement industry sector growth as well as importance of having comprehensive safety programs for all facets of business. Incorporation of ASTM standards by IBNORCA, national standards body of Bolivia, was made possible through MOU signed in 2002. Read More

NIST Grants will improve access to services and reduce fraud.

NIST has awarded more than $2 million in grants to Pennsylvania and Michigan to test new online identity technologies to improve access to government services and the delivery of federal assistance programs, and to reduce fraud. Pilot projects support administration's National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace, which envisions an "Identity Ecosystem" that allows people to choose from array of private and public credentials to prove they are who they say they are online. ASTM approves standard for lean duplex stainless steels.

ASTM A1084, Test Method for Detecting Detrimental Phases in Lean Duplex Austenitic/Ferritic Stainless Steels, provides tool to check if product made out of lean duplex alloy contains deleterious phases originating from improper heat treatment. Standard will give added information outside existing standard specifications that material is free from deleterious amounts of unwanted phases that, if present in significant amounts, may deteriorate corrosion resistance and toughness properties. International Code Council adopts specification for sunrooms.

At its Public Comment Hearings, International Code Council voted to adopt AAMA/NPEA/NSA 2100-12, Specification for Sunrooms, into 2015 International Residential Code. Adoption of reference standard means IRC will now have 5 distinct categories of sunrooms for purpose of uniformly applying code's requirements to patio covers, sun porches, sunrooms, solariums, and conservatories that have been popular for homeowners who want to add recreational space by enclosing porch, deck, or patio area.
