BIO Announces NSF Track featuring 10 emerging biotech companies.

BIO's announced agreement with National Science Foundation (NSF) to bring SBIR-funded, early-stage biotech companies to present at BIO Investor Forum 2013. Presenting companies in NSF track include ADMdx, Biodesy, Carmot, CertiChem, Jade Therapeutics, Nano3D Biosciences, Nanofiber Solutions, Parabon Nanolabs, Stemina, and Tymora Analytical Operations. AASHTO awards top prizes in Faces of Transportation contest.

October 1, 2013

During Faces of Transportation competition, 28 transportation department employees from 21 states and 6 private citizens submitted 121 photographs. Grand Prize was awarded to California DOT Engineer Martin Chandrawinata for photograph of iron worker using a cutting torch while suspended from San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. People's Choice Award was presented to photographer Bill Hall who captured California DOT Engineer Matt Bruce inspecting cable band installation near top of same bridge. Read More

IPC invites researchers, technical experts, and industry leaders to submit poster presentation abstracts for IPC APEX EXPO®, which will take place March 25–27, 2014 in Las Vegas, NV. Technical poster presentations are being sought on relevant electronics topics, including design, materials, assembly, processes, and equipment. EPA Flame Retardants Evaluation covers safer substitute for HBCD.

U.S. EPA released Design for the Environment Alternatives Assessment draft report on alternatives to hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), a flame retardant chemical that has persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic characteristics. Findings in report can help manufacturers identify safer alternatives to use of HBCD in polystyrene building insulation. In addition to identifying 2 viable chemical alternatives, report provides list of substances that are not currently expected to be viable. Read More

Cycling Emissions Calculated for increased alt energy in West.

October 1, 2013

Phase 2 of Western Wind and Solar Integration Study (WWSIS-2) quantifies potential impacts of increasing wind and solar power generation on operators of fossil-fueled power plants in West. Study finds carbon emissions induced by more frequent cycling are negligible (<0.2%) compared with carbon reductions achieved via wind and solar power generation. SO2 emissions reductions from wind and solar are 5% less than expected, and emissions of nitrogen oxides are reduced 2% more than expected. Read More

PPA announces Student Design Challenge winners.

Paperboard Packaging Alliance, a joint initiative between AF&PA and the Paperboard Packaging Council, announced winners of its Ninth Annual Student Design Challenge at the PACK EXPO convention. This year's challenge tasked students with designing functional and creative package for movie theater candy, addressing how design could be merchandised. First and second place winners were from Pratt Institute, and third place winners were from Fashion Institute of Technology. Read More

EPA Announces WaterSense Labeled Product for commercial kitchens.

U.S. EPA finalized first WaterSense specification for a commercial kitchen product: pre-rinse spray valves. These kind of valves, which remove excess food waste from dishes prior to dishwashing, are now eligible to earn WaterSense label and help food service establishments conserve water and energy. WaterSense labeled pre-rinse spray valves will be promoted by ENERGY STAR® program as part of  energy saving products and practices for restaurant industry. Read More

U.S. EPA presented its 13th annual Green Power Leadership Awards to 21 Green Power Partners and 3 suppliers for achievements in advancing USA's renewable electricity market. ASTM Standard deals with arc rating for protective hand products.

ASTM F2675/F2675M, Test Method for Determining Arc Ratings of Hand Protective Products Developed and Used for Electrical Arc Flash Protection, has been developed by Subcommittee F18.65 on Wearing Apparel. This standard will be used to determine arc rating of hand protective products – gloves, glove material, glove material systems, and other protective products – designed to fit on hand and specifically intended for electric arch flash protection. EPA Proposes Carbon Pollution Standards for new power plants.

To combat climate change and improve public health, U.S. EPA proposed Clean Air Act (CAA) standards to cut carbon pollution from new power plants. Outreach and engagement with state/tribal/local governments, industry and labor leaders, non-profits, and others aim to establish carbon pollution standards for existing power plants and move toward cleaner power sector. NEMA welcomes Senate approval of Helium Bill.

September 27, 2013

NEMA welcomed Senate passage of compromise legislation to reauthorize, extend, and improve operations of Federal Helium Reserve in Texas and called on House to vote as soon as possible to approve bill. If Congress fails to act on helium legislation before October 7, Federal Helium Reserve will cease operations. U.S. users of helium acquire much of their supply via industrial gas refining companies associated with the reserve, which currently holds approximately 30% of global supply. Read More

EPA announces greenhouse gas standards for new power plants.

According to EPA, electricity generation represents one-third of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. Proposed standards are an important step toward reaching U.S. goal of reducing greenhouse gas emission by 17% below 2005 levels by 2020. In statement, Kevin Kennedy, Director, U.S. Climate Initiative at the World Resources Institute, said proposal on new power plants sends a clear message that U.S. is serious about meeting its international commitment. BIO, Member Companies urge Congress to pass 5-year Farm Bill.

Along with group of renewable chemical companies and state advocacy organizations, BIO wrote to chairpersons and ranking members of House and Senate Committees on Agriculture to urge passage of 5-year Farm Bill that includes Senate's language on Energy Title. Title IX of Senate-passed Farm Bill (S.954) provides mandatory funding to USDA energy programs and grants renewable chemicals companies access to Biorefinery Assistance Program and Biomass Research and Development Program.
