AIA Says Security of Americans is threatened by budget politics.

Addressing risk to USA's national security strategy outlined in Defense Secretary Hagel's July 10 letter to Senate Armed Services Committee, AIA President and CEO Marion C. Blakey said AIA is "gravely concerned by the second wave of sequestration impacts." Blakey continued, expressing AIA's advocacy for President Obama's annual proposed budgets for fiscal years 2013 and 2014, but also noted unseen effects of cuts including loss of critical skills and experience represented by workforce. Mikhail Sokolov, Ph.D., senior research staff member at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Materials Science and Technology Division, Oak Ridge, TN, received Award of Merit and honorary title of fellow from ASTM International. Sokolov was honored for contributions to successful symposia for Committee E10 on Nuclear Technology and Applications as well as his work on transition range fracture toughness standards for Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture. Sonia Bain, supervisor of refining, analytical, and development at Marathon Petroleum Co., has been honored with Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow by ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants. A member of ASTM International since 1986, Bain was cited for her outstanding contributions in the development of standards related to liquid fuels within Subcommittees D02.A0 on Gasoline and Oxygenated Fuels and D02.D0 on Hydrocarbons for Chemical and Special Uses. Dr. Ara Jeknavorian receives ASTM Award of Merit.

ASTM International Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates presented Award of Merit to Ara A. Jeknavorian, Ph.D., a research fellow at W.R. Grace & Co. Jeknavorian was honored for his dedicated longtime service and outstanding contributions to standards for traditional and newly developed concrete admixtures and supplementary cementitious materials. A member of ASTM since 1984, Jeknavorian was awarded honorary C09 membership status in 2004 and received Award of Appreciation in 2011. Read More

IREC invites public comment on new training standard.

Draft IREC Standard 01023: 2013 for Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Distributed Generation Training is a result of IREC revising Standard 01022, currently used for assessment of training organizations and instructors in same industry space. Standard 01022 has been divided to address training provider and instructor separately. Ali Bahrami joins AIA as vice president of Civil Aviation.

Ali Bahrami, an executive with more than 30 years of experience in aviation and one of America’s leading experts in commercial aircraft certification and validation, has joined AIA as VP of Civil Aviation. He will be responsible for managing AIA’s work and advocacy on civil aviation issues including integration of unmanned aircraft systems into national airspace system. Most recently, Bahrami was the Manager of the Transport Airplane Directorate of the FAA Aircraft Certification Service. Read More

USA Construction Industry added 13,000 jobs in June.

July 10, 2013

According to July 5 report by Department of Labor, USA's construction industry unemployment rate fell to 9.8% for first time since September 2007 with the addition of 13,000 jobs in June. Industry has added 190,000 jobs, 3.4% increase since June 2012. Every major category of construction experienced gains in employment. Across all industries, USA added 195,000 jobs as private sector expanded by 202,000 jobs and public sector shrunk by 7,000 jobs. Read More

EPA warns against use of refrigerant substitutes.

U.S. EPA is warning homeowners, propane manufacturers and sellers, home improvement contractors, and air conditioning technicians of potential safety hazards related to the use of propane or other unapproved refrigerants in home air conditioning systems. At this time, EPA has not approved use of propane refrigerant or other hydrocarbon refrigerants in any type of air conditioner. Use of these substances poses potential fire or explosion hazard for homeowners and service technicians. Read More
