USAID/ANSI Alliance to aid countries with TBT compliance.

ANSI and United States Agency for International Development (USAID) have agreed to collaborate on multiyear public-private partnership intended to assist developing countries in implementing their commitments under World Trade Organization's Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) agreement. ANSI and USAID will oversee the selection process, with input from U.S. government and private-sector experts. Expressions of interest from developing country partners are now being accepted. NIST Test helps improve firefighter breathing equipment.

As of September 1, 2013, standard firefighter breathing equipment cannot be certified to NFPA standards unless facepiece lenses pass test developed by NIST. Said test is designed to reduce degradation and possible failure of facepiece lens in SCBA under high-heat firefighting conditions. Incorporated within 2013 update of its standard for SCBA units, new Elevated Temperature Heat and Flame Resistance Test exposes SCBA to 500°F for 5 min in oven followed by 10 sec of direct flame contact. NIST Microscopy Technique could aid 3D component development.

Through-Focus Scanning Optical Microscopy (TSOM) technique, developed at NIST for improving optical microscopes, has been applied to monitoring next generation of computer chip circuit components. Sensitive to features as small as 10 nm across, TSOM has been shown to detect tiny differences in 3D shapes of circuit components. This addresses industry measurement challenges for manufacturing process control and maintaining viability of optical microscopy in electronics manufacturing. Read More

ASTM Awards Peter Collette for plastic piping standards work.

In recognition of his contributions to development of standards for ASTM International Committee F17 on Plastic Piping Systems, Peter Collette, retiree of Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) in Newark, NJ, received Frank W. Reinhart and Henry W. (Butch) Kuhlmann Award. Collette has been ASTM International member since 1979 and, as ASTM fellow, was honored with Award of Merit from Committee F17 in 2000 for his dedicated work. Read More

ASTM Honors Eric Boes for copper standardization contributions.

Eric Boes received Copper Club Award from ASTM International Committee B05 on Copper and Copper Alloys for his leadership of main committee as well as subcommittees and task groups and his contributions to development of new standards and revisions of existing standards. Member since 1991, Boes is ASTM fellow who received Award of Merit in 2003. Outside ASTM, Boes is member of American Foundry Society, American Society for Quality, American Welding Society, and ASM International. Read More

NREL Fills Leadership Role for Energy Systems Integration.

On June 24, Bryan J. Hannegan will join Energy Department's National Renewable Energy Laboratory as associate laboratory director for Energy Systems Integration. NREL Director Dan Arvizu cited Hannegan's "unique background as a scientist, engineer, and manager," claiming his experience "will provide NREL with leadership in this important field of energy integration." AAMA Contest commemorates 50th anniversary of certification label.

AAMA announced search contest for oldest in-service window, door, or skylight bearing AAMA air-water-structural certification label. Contest marks 50th anniversary of Certification Gold Label. Photo of label, product, and building, with entry form, are needed for eligibility. Contest runs from June 15 to September 15; winners will be announced at AAMA Fall Conference, October 27–30, and prizes include $300 for first place, $150 for second place, and $50 for third place. NREL launches open-source system for data collection/analysis.

Used on its own campus, NREL's open-source system stores, integrates, and aligns energy-related time-series data. Energy DataBus can collect data from control systems using BACNet protocol, from electrical meters via ModBus protocol, and from weather sensors via web requests to on-site weather station. Suitable for single buildings as well as large campuses, software can store large amounts of data collected at high frequencies, and integrate data into single database. Read More

EPA awards students for sustainable environmental solutions.

EPA announced that 7 university and college teams received P3 Award for their innovative solutions to public health and environmental challenges. EPA’s People, Prosperity and the Planet award competition was held at the 9th Annual National Sustainable Design Expo and featured approximately 300 student innovators showcasing their sustainable project. Each award winning team qualifies to receive grant of up to $90,000 to further develop their design and potentially bring it to marketplace. Read More

Released by NIST, FACTS: A Framework for Analysis, Comparison, and Testing of Standards outlines problem-solving methodology for facilitating design and implementation of voluntary consensus standards. Methodology uses matrix format to aid process of analyzing proposed or existing standard in light of relevant characteristics. ISO Prize honors individuals contributing to standardization.

ISO Prize, an award created on the recommendation of Dr. Boris Aleshin, ISO's immediate past-president, is intended to honor an individual outside the ISO community who has made significant contributions to the wider understanding and use of ISO voluntary consensus standards. International Organization for Standardization will present the award and prize of 20,000 Swiss francs to the winner at the 2013 ISO General Assembly in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Read More

Proposed Standard will help combat Clostridium difficile spores.

ASTM WK31504, Test Method for Producing High Titers of Viable and Semi-Purified Spores of Clostridium difficile using a Liquid Medium, is currently being developed. Proposed standard will describe production and semipurification of Clostridium difficile spores (endospores) when testing environmental surface disinfectants used to combat C. difficile. Liquid medium described therein will enable proper testing of disinfectants for ability to deal with C. difficile in environment. Read More

ASTM WK42011, Guide for Contractor Self-Assessment for U.S. Government Property Management Systems, is being developed by Subcommittee E53.20. McCormick Place Development Plan to expand options at IMTS.

Development plans announced by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's administration include 1,100-room hotel, to be completed in 2016, plus 500-room hotel to be built afterward. Included in plans is arena for DePaul Blue Demons basketball team where conferences, meetings, and concerts will also be hosted. Totaling $1.1 billion, plans provide for greater choice of options for IMTS exhibitors and attendees. Redevelopment of Navy Pier and expansion of Children's Museum are also planned. Read More
