AEM Announces Winners of safety materials promotion.

AEM announced winners of promotion conducted as part of safety outreach from exhibit booths at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2014 and 2014 AED Summit & CONDEX trade show. Promotion aimed to raise awareness for AEM's industry-consensus safety materials program, and winners received iPads and iTunes gift cards to download AEM safety manual eBooks. Winners were John Mason of International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) and Tom Viskniskki of Sullivan-Palatek Compressors. Read More

Ashley Easterby of Network Restorers wins Martin L. King Award.

Restoration Industry Association (RIA) presented Ashley Easterby with Martin L. King Award for his multiple achievements. These include creating strong network by convincing restorers in Australian market they would mutually benefit by working together, establishing Internet-based job management system, expanding service offerings to include TPA that administers multiple-area restoration claims for carriers, and establishing training academy. RIA Announces Winner of 2014 Golden Quill award.

At 69th Annual RIA Convention and Industry Expo, Restoration Industry Association (RIA) awarded 2014 Golden Quill award to Chuck Violand of Violand Management Associates for his 2-part article, "Overcoming Stage II Stall." In response, Violand said he was "truly honored" and that he appreciated the award as well as "the opportunity to help build strong, successful businesses in our industry." Golden Quill will be renamed "Patricia L. Harman Golden Quill Award" beginning in 2015. Read More

AEM Updates Safety Manuals with illustrative graphics.

AEM updated its Roller Compactor and Directional Drilling Tracking Equipment Safety Manuals with pictorial graphics, included in AEM Pictorial Database, that conform to ISO and ANSI standards. These graphics reinforce manual safety text and harmonize with current machine safety sign and manufacturer manual practices. As industry-consensus safety documents, manuals provide safety information to operators but not as substitute for manufacturer manuals. Read More

EPA honors winners of 2013 Campus RainWorks Challenge.

EPA announced winners of its second annual Campus RainWorks Challenge, a design challenge created to engage college and university students in reinventing water infrastructure and developing innovative green infrastructure systems to reduce stormwater pollution and build resilience to climate change. Winners include: University of Florida, Gainsville, FL; Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS; Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI; and Mississippi State University, Mississippi State, MS. PRIME School Initiative is recognized with 2 industry awards.

SME Education Foundation’s flagship educational program, PRIME (Partnership Response in Manufacturing Education), has earned award nominations from two industry associations. PRIME was recognized by the Great Lakes Manufacturing Council's Talented Workforce Initiative which identifies the most imaginative and effective solutions for building the region’s pool of manufacturing talent. NEMA Publishes RT 1-2014 to enhance radiation therapy treatments.

NEMA, on behalf of Medical Imaging and Technology Alliance (MITA), published NEMA RT 1-2014 Gating Interface, which is intended to enhance safety and effectiveness of radiation therapy (RT) treatments. RT 1 provides key technical information to developers for synchronizing equipment with patient's breathing and other movements during cancer treatment. Also, standard defines technical fail safe provisions to improve interoperability among various manufacturers' devices. Read More

FAA Announces Operational UAS Test Site and grants 2-year COA.

April 29, 2014

First of 6 test sites chosen to perform unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) research is operational more than 2 ½ months ahead of deadline. FAA provided North Dakota Department of Commerce team with Certificate of Waiver or Authorization (COA) to begin using Draganflyer X4ES small UAS at its Northern Plains UAS Test Site. Team plans to begin flight operations during week of May 5, and goals include checking soil quality and crops status as well as collecting safety-related operational data.
