AAMA Specification streamlines fenestration industry BIM process.

AAMA 912-13, Voluntary Specification for Non-Residential Fenestration Building Information Modeling (BIM), identifies and outlines minimum requirements for Design intent (DI) models and Project execution and coordination (PEC) models. Intended to be referenced in other industry standards, contract documents, proposals, and marketing materials, specification should, according to AAMA BIM Task Group chair Dan Luoma, "provide a more streamline BIM process for the fenestration industry." NEMA publishes dimensional requirements for plugs/receptacles.

NEMA has published ANSI/NEMA WD 6-2012 Wiring Devices—Dimensional Specifications, which covers dimensional requirements for plugs and receptacles up to 60 A and 600 V. Substantive changes to current document include introduction of marking for automatically controlled receptacles adopted by NEMA and mandated by National Electrical Code®, and dimensions for single and dual 2 1/8 in. mounting plates. As part of FOUNDATION for Remote Operations Management solution implementing wireless and remote I/O, preliminary technical specification defines fieldbus transducer block used within FOUNDATION for ROM devices to communicate with ISA100.11a instruments. In addition, it describes method for configuration tools and asset-managing hosts to access ISA100.11a devices, as well as structures to identify and maintain device status in ISA100.11a networks connected to FOUNDATION for ROM devices. Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber's proclamation of August 1 as "IEEE Oregon Sustainable Technology Day" coincided with IEEE-USA Annual Meeting, which began in Portland, OR with first IEEE Conference on Technologies for Sustainability (SusTech). From 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. on September 30, Dr. Dean Webster will present keynote address titled "Improving the Sustainability of Thermosets Using Renewables." Dr. Webster is Professor and Chair in the Department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials at North Dakota State University. He received a B.S. in Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Materials Engineering Science from Virginia Tech. Prior to joining NDSU in 2001, he worked for Sherwin-Williams and Eastman Chemical Company. Read More

ASTM Homeland Security Committee to develop body armor standards.

ASTM International is launching initiative to develop standards for body armor worn by military and criminal justice personnel. This effort is supported by National Institute of Justice, U.S. Army Program Executive Office – Soldier, and NIST, who are collaborating to harmonize existing ASTM body armor standards, especially test methods, where practical. EPA strengthens chemical assessment process.

EPA proposes rule to modernize Clean Water Act reporting.

August 6, 2013

EPA's e-reporting rule would make facility-specific information, such as inspection and enforcement history, pollutant monitoring results, and other data required by permits accessible to public through EPA's website. EPA estimates that, once rule is fully implemented, 46 states and the Virgin Island Territory that are authorized to administer National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System program will collectively save $29 million each year by switching from paper to electronic reporting. NREL Report details solar land-use requirements.

Published by NREL, Land-use Requirements for Solar Power Plants in the United States is based on actual land-use practices from existing solar facilities. Lead author Sean Ong gathered data from 72% of the solar power plants installed or under construction in USA. Findings include that solar power plant providing all electricity for 1,000 homes would require 32 acres of land. Lincoln Electric (Cleveland, OH) received Certified Robot Integrator designation from RIA. Senators Mark Pryor (D-AR), Roy Blunt (R-MO), Daniel Coats (R-IN), Al Franken (D-MN), and Jerry Moran (R-KS) introduced S. 1413 to exempt future FDA user fees from sequestration. AdvaMed, BIO, GPhA, MITA, and PhRMA, representing biopharmaceutical and medical device companies, praised efforts to prevent sequestration of future FDA user fees. AAMA updates specification for self adhering flashing.

AAMA 711-13 establishes minimum performance requirements for self adhering flashing surrounding exterior wall fenestration products. Specification provides method to determine minimum width of flashing products and to evaluate influence of environmental factors on installation of products applied under typical field conditions. Most significant change made to AAMA 711 was addition of modified version of ASTM G155 Xenon Arc Test as alternative to ASTM G154 for accelerated weatherability testing. Read More
