BIO Lauds Navy, USDA Leadership on advanced biofuel procurement.

BIO thanked Navy Secretary Ray Mabus and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack for announcing advanced biofuel procurement opportunities through Farm to Fleet program. BIO's Brent Erickson postulated that "The Navy’s leadership in procuring advanced biofuels will encourage rapid scale up of new technologies and construction of capacity." He went on to say that "The USDA can help to build the necessary supply chains of sustainable, renewable biomass supplies." BIO Expresses Gratitude for hearing on RFS.

BIO thanked Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works for holding hearing on Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) and EPA's proposed rule for 2014. BIO's Brent Erickson called attention to advanced biofuel companies' "billions of dollars" of investments in building industry from ground up and noted how EPA's proposed rule will strand those investments, inhibit further investment/development, and threaten existing and future jobs as well as efforts to commercialize other biotech R&D. Proposed Standard addresses vacuum cleaner air performance. .

ASTM WK14392, Test Method for Evaluating the Sustained Air Performance and Exhaust Emissions of Central Vacuum Cleaning Units, is being developed by Subcommittee F11.22 on Air Performance, part of Committee F11 on Vacuum Cleaners. Standard will test how vacuum performance will be affected after multiple vacuuming events over extended period of time. It will help identify areas in which manufacturers may be able to improve designs and provide sensible advertising claims based on industry test. Read More

SME announces 2014 Officers and Board of Directors.

Director of the federal Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office has been elected to lead SME as it continues its new strategic direction and brand position. Michael F. Molnar, FSME, CMfgE, PE, was sworn in as the 2014 president of the 81-year-old organization dedicated to advancing manufacturing and attracting future generations. ASTM Standard helps assure implantable medical device safety.

ASTM WK19883, Test Method for Conducting and Evaluating Galvanic Corrosion Tests of Medical Implant Devices, is being developed by Subcommittee F04.15 on Material Test Methods. Cardiovascular, orthopedic, neurovascular, and dental implants will be evaluated using this standard. Making sure these devices do not experience galvanic corrosion helps assure they are biocompatible and can function as intended in the human body without degrading or eliciting an unwanted response. ASTM Textiles Committee will celebrate its 100th anniversary.

ASTM International Committee D13 on Textiles will celebrate its 100th anniversary with reception and dinner on January 27, 2014 in Houston, TX, where D13 will be meeting from January 27–29 during ASTM January Committee Week. Events scheduled for this anniversary event include entertainment, awards ceremony, cocktail reception, and dinner. BIO says EPA's proposal will increase greenhouse gas emissions.

December 17, 2013

EPA's 2014 proposed rule for the Renewable Fuel Standard, which would for the first time cut biofuel use, will require using more petroleum and increase emissions of greenhouse gases. BIO utilized GREET1.2013 model to estimate changes in petroleum demand and associated CO2 equivalent emissions from both 2013 and statutory RFS levels for 2014. According to estimates, EPA proposal will result in an increase of more than 23 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions. Read More

ASTM Standard tests PVC flooring for plasticizer migration.

ASTM International standard will provide qualitative means to determine potential effect of plasticizers contained within PVC floor covering materials on specific adhesive. ASTM D7888, Practice for Evaluating Adhesive and the Effects of Plasticizer Found Within Polyvinylchloride-Backed Floor Coverings, was developed by Subcommittee D14.10 on Working Properties, part of ASTM International Committee D14 on Adhesives. EPA's 2013 Strategic Sustainability Performance Plan, as part of President Obama's Climate Action Plan to cut carbon pollution and lead in clean energy, outlines actions planned over next year to reduce energy use and waste in agency operations. American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) revised its standard for electrified irrigation systems: ANSI/ASAE S397.4, Electrical Service and Equipment for Irrigation. This document incorporates updates to normative references, citations for which have changed since standard was last revised, in 2007. Open, non-proprietary FOUNDATION™ fieldbus technical specifications have been updated to include features for enhancing usability of FOUNDATION technology. Specifically, features include additional advanced support for fieldbus device replacement and backwards compatibility, Device Description (DD) templates, field diagnostics, and alarm/alert integration. BIO Makes Statement regarding Innovation Act (H.R. 3309).

BIO made it know that provisions within H.R. 3309 "would erect unreasonable barriers to access justice for innovators" and cited in particular "small start-ups that must be able to defend their businesses against patent infringement in a timely and cost-effective manner, and without needless and numerous procedural hurdles or other obstacles.” Bio also called provisions "overly broad" and pointed out they would result in "unintended and unknowable consequences" for innovators. RFS Proposal will undercut development of advanced biofuels.

Environmental Protection Agency has proposed to decrease use of advanced biofuels in transportation in 2014, reversing growth path intended in RFS. BIO recently testified at EPA's Public Hearing for the 2014 Standard for the Renewable Fuel Standard Program, telling agency that commercial development of advanced and cellulosic biofuels, as well as other biotechnology applications, could come to a halt if the recently released proposal becomes policy. North American Machine Vision Sales soar in third quarter.

According to AIA statistics, total machine vision sales in North America climbed 23% compared to third quarter of 2012. Machine vision systems category, which includes application specific machine vision systems and smart cameras, continued driving overall growth with 25% increase over third quarter 2012, while sales of machine vision components grew 10% over third quarter of last year. Cameras, lighting, and imaging boards all increased, while optics and software decreased mildly. Read More
