BIO Summit to focus on renewable chemicals, biobased products.

To be held in San Diego, CA from December 8–11, BIO's 2013 Pacific Rim Summit on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy will feature presentations on platforms used to create better and more efficient renewable chemicals for broader applications. Event will feature breakout sessions on Renewable Chemicals Platforms, presentations deliberating on novel renewable chemicals and consumer products, and discussions arguing for inclusion of biobased consumer products in oleochemical value chain. Gary Benson receives Distinguished Service Award.

AMCA International announced that Gary Benson, President of Mechanovent Corporation, received the Distinguished Service Award, which encompasses not just service to the Association, but to the HVACR industry as a whole. A former AMCA President, Benson was instrumental in the development of "system optimization" using microprocessor-based HVAC equipment that communicates with building management systems for occupancy comfort, reduced energy consumption, and improved equipment reliability. AIA mourns former Rep. Isaac N. Skelton.

October 31, 2013

AIA mourns loss of former Rep. Isaac N. "Ike" Skelton (D-Mo), a dedicated servant of his Missouri constituents and the American people. First elected to Congress in 1976, Skelton served for 34 years. From 1998 to 2006, he was Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, and Chairman from 2006 to 2010. Skelton was a true guardian of the armed forces, making sure they had state-of-the-art equipment and protective gear when going into harm’s way. Read More

AMCA Executive Committee, Board Members announced for 2013-2014.

AMCA International announced those AMCA Executive Committee and Board of Directors who will serve during 2013–2014 term. Dr. Geoff Sheard, VP of Fan Technology, Flaktwoods, Ltd, was elected President, while Victor C. Colwell, VP of Sales and Marketing for Loren Cook Company, was elected as Chairman of the Board. Other members include Patrick A. Cockrum (Vice President), Tim Kilgore (Treasurer), and John Knapp (Secretary). Dan Hartlein was newly elected to AMCA Board of Directors. Read More

Medical Device Security Disclosure Standard updated by NEMA.

NEMA published HIMSS/NEMA HN 1-2013 Manufacturer Disclosure Statement for Medical Device Security. HN 1 standard consists of MDS2 form and related instructions on completing it. Changes from previous edition include alignment of MDS2 with IEC 80001-1 Application of Risk Management for IT Networks Incorporating Medical Devices (Parts 1 and 2), and MDS2 data requested of device manufacturers more adequately addresses 19 security capabilities of IEC/TR 80001-2-2. ASTM to develop calibration standard for viscometers.

Being developed by Subcommittee E37.08 on Rheology, part of ASTM International Committee E37 on Thermal Measurements, ASTM WK43494, Test Method for Viscosity Calibration of Rotational Viscometers, will improve agreement of results between laboratories. Once approved, standard will be used by those in paint, petroleum, plastics, adhesive, and rubber industries, where standards already exist for rotational viscometry. Read More

National Award Recipients honored by IREC at 3iAwards Ceremony.

IREC honored national award winners for Best of 2013 in renewable energy and energy efficiency. In celebration of 20 years of recognizing exemplary people, projects, and programs, competitive awards were renamed IREC 3iAwards. Categories included State & Local Government Project of the Year, Community Renewable Project of the Year, IREC Accredited Training Program of the Year, and IREC Certified Trainer of the Year. ASTM Sports Equipment Standard covers wrestling mats.

ASTM F2983, Guide for Manufacturers for Labeling and Care Instructions for Wrestling Mats, provides list of required information to be placed on labels that are affixed to wrestling mats, including identification and contact information for manufacturer and instructions stating that mat is only to be used under supervision of qualified instructors. Standard also provides requirements for additional product literature that can be placed directly on packaging for mat or included with it. Read More

SPE Automotive Division selects 2013 Hall of Fame winner.

First North American implementation of an integrated front-end module system used on 1996 model year Ford® Taurus® and Mercury® Sable® sedans produced by Ford Motor Co. was selected as 2013 Hall of Fame winner in SPE's 43rd annual Automotive Innovation Awards Competition. To be considered for award, automotive-plastic component must have been in continuous service in some form for at least 15 years and preferably have been widely adopted within automotive or ground-transportation industries. IPC Conference aims to clean up reliability problems.

ASTM Road and Paving Committee honors Stuart Schwotzer.

Committee D04 on Road and Paving Materials presented ASTM International Prevost Hubbard Award to Stuart Schwotzer, senior geologist in Construction Services Division at Bowser-Morner Laboratories in Dayton, OH, for his contributions to development of standards for road and paving materials. ASTM International member since 1978, Schwotzer specializes in testing and evaluation of aggregates used in construction. He has also held various roles at Ohio DoT in Columbus. Read More

L. David Suits, executive director of the North American Geosynthetic Society, Albany, NY, has received A. Ivan Johnson Outstanding Achievement Award from ASTM International Committee D18 on Soil and Rock. Award is presented to member whose efforts have produced particular outstanding result or significant contribution to work of committee. Bolivian Government Accepts ASTM Standards for amusement rides.

At amusement ride safety seminar in La Paz, Bolivia on August 23 of 2013, Bolivian officials announced acceptance of amusement ride safety standards developed by ASTM International Committee F24 on Amusement Rides and Devices. Seminar focused on amusement industry sector growth as well as importance of having comprehensive safety programs for all facets of business. Incorporation of ASTM standards by IBNORCA, national standards body of Bolivia, was made possible through MOU signed in 2002. Read More

EPRI will coordinate meetings of North American SynchroPhasor Initiative through 2015. NASPI is a collaborative effort among US DOE, EPRI, and North American electric utilities, vendors, consultants, researchers, and academics to improve power system reliability and visibility through wide-area measurement and control. An active member of E28 since 1992, McCowan was recognized for his notable leadership and contributions to the development of standards in the field of impact testing. BIO announces U.S. Ambassador Gary Locke as keynote speaker.

BIO announced that Gary Locke, U.S. Ambassador to China, will provide keynote address on Nov 12 at the BIO Convention in China. Throughout his public service career, Ambassador Locke has worked to strengthen economic ties between U.S. and China. According to Joseph Damond, Senior VP, International Affairs at BIO, Locke's experience in both countries has been particularly valuable in helping create policies that support development of partnerships between Eastern and Western biotech companies.
