SPE to co-locate conference with AIMCAL conference.

SPE will draw on strong synergies between extrusion and web converting by co-locating its Flexible Packaging Conference with the Fall 2014 Web Coating and Handling Conference sponsored by the Association of International Metallizers, Coaters, and Laminators. Scheduled for Oct 19-22, 2014, event will consist of 4 tracks: AIMCAL’s Web Coating, Vacuum Web Coating, and Web Handling sessions, and SPE’s FlexPackCon. Both groups have issued a call for papers, with abstracts due by May 17. Read More

Settlement with Lowe's protects public from lead pollution.

Lowe’s Home Centers has agreed to implement a comprehensive, corporate-wide compliance program at over 1,700 stores nationwide to ensure that contractors minimize lead dust from renovation activities, as required by Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting Rule. Company will also pay $500,000 civil penalty, which is the largest ever for violations of RRP Rule. Settlement stems from violations, discovered by EPA inspectors, of RRP Rule’s recordkeeping and work practice standards at private homes. Read More

SME Mfg4 Event to offer STEM-focused student program.

At Mfg4 event in Hartford, CT (May 6–8), SME and SME Education Foundation will offer program for middle and high school students interested in manufacturing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Said student program will feature access to show floor; tour at TRUMPF in Farmington, CT; presentations; and hands-on activities. Two SME Education Foundation PRIME schools in Massachusetts will  have students attending both days as mentors and escorts. Read More

NTSB Safety Seminar looks at general aviation accidents.

On May 10, 2014 in Ashburn, VA from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, NTSB will present seminar highlighting lessons learned from its investigations of general aviation accidents involving aerodynamic stalls and loss of control. NTSB is partnering with other organizations committed to enhancing GA safety – Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, FAA, and Society of Aviation and Flight Educators (SAFE) – that will also be participating. ISO Standard addresses pressure regulator testing.

ISO 19973-4:2014 provides test procedures for assessing reliability of pneumatic pressure regulators by testing, using general test conditions and calculation method from ISO 19973-1. Standard applies to manually adjustable and remote-piloted pressure regulators, both relieving and non-relieving, but does not apply to pressure regulators that have a permanent bleed. Standard also specifies test equipment and failure criteria for tests to assess reliability of pneumatic pressure regulators. Read More

SME's Mfg4 Event to feature cutting-edge technologies.

Scheduled for May 6–8, 2014, Mfg4 will enable manufacturing professionals to collaborate, network, and share solutions. Event will highlight more than 45 product categories and technologies – everything from additive manufacturing and 3D printing to precision machining and tooling to micromanufacturing. This year, Marubeni Citizen Cincom will introduce a new high precision 20 mm Swiss style lathe that incorporates a B axis offering greater flexibility for a multitude of applications. Read More

FAA Announces Operational UAS Test Site and grants 2-year COA.

April 29, 2014

First of 6 test sites chosen to perform unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) research is operational more than 2 ½ months ahead of deadline. FAA provided North Dakota Department of Commerce team with Certificate of Waiver or Authorization (COA) to begin using Draganflyer X4ES small UAS at its Northern Plains UAS Test Site. Team plans to begin flight operations during week of May 5, and goals include checking soil quality and crops status as well as collecting safety-related operational data. Restoration Industry Association (RIA) introduced its executive committee and board of directors at 69th Annual RIA Convention and Industry Expo. Executive committee includes President Scott Stamper, 1st VP Chuck Violand, VP Mark Springer, Secretary Jack White, Treasurer Larry Holder, and Immediate Past President Samuel J. Bergman. Duncan Bennett, Michael Goldberg, Scott Jones, Bill Loveland, John Rybski, and Dale Sharp will serve as at-large directors. Read More
