Busloads of architects and mechanical engineers toured NREL's Research Support Facility, one of world's largest net-zero-energy office buildings, and came away inspired with ideas for how to design and build eco-friendly structures on a budget. At Energy Systems Integration Facility, tour participants got to view a high performance computing data center, which will house one of world's most energy efficient super-computers, dedicated to energy efficiency and renewable energy research. EPA Launches Online Mapping Tool to promote access to EISs.

Web-based mapping tool, launched by EPA, provides public with access and information on Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) filed with EPA for major projects proposed on federal lands and other proposed federal actions. Users can click on any state for EIS list and are subsequently provided with comment letters submitted by EPA on EISs within last 60 days. Information about potential environmental, social, and economic impacts of any projects is readily available. Read More

EPA, Coast Guard reach pollution control agreement with Carnival.

September 11, 2013

U.S. EPA and Coast Guard have reached agreement in principle with Carnival Corporation to develop advanced emission control technology, which will be used in waters surrounding U.S. coasts. Under said agreement, Carnival will develop and deploy new exhaust gas cleaning system on up to 32 ships over next 3 years to be used in Emission Control Areas (ECAs). New controls combine use of sulfur oxide (SOx) scrubbers with diesel particulate filters. Read More

Business Index shows PT/MC growth is slowing.

The 2Q13 PTDA Business Index produced reading of 54.7, which represents decrease over last quarter’s reading of 61.1. This indicates that the power transmission/motion control industry expanded for 13th consecutive quarter at a slower pace compared with 1Q13. Conducted jointly by PTDA and Cleveland Research Company, PTDA Business Index tracks change in business activity, new orders, employment, supplier deliveries, inventories, prices, and backlog. U.S. reaches settlement with Safeway to reduce emissions.

In settlement agreement with U.S., Safeway grocery store chain has agreed to pay $600,000 civil penalty and implement corporate-wide plan to significantly reduce emissions of ozone-depleting substances from refrigeration equipment at 659 stores nationwide, estimated to cost $4.1 million. Settlement resolves allegations that Safeway violated federal Clean Air Act by failing to promptly repair leaks of HCFC-22, and failed to keep adequate records of refrigeration equipment servicing. BIO Commends CA Senate for passage of biosimilars bill.

In his statement regarding passage of Senate Bill 598, BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood commended California's Assembly and Senate for "overwhelmingly passing legislation that creates a pathway for the substitution of interchangeable biologic medicines." Greenwood also expressed support for this legislation and encouraged Governor Brown to sign this bill. North American PCB Sales, Orders continue upward trend in July.

July 2013 findings of IPC's North American PCB Statistical Program show sales and order growth continuing to trend upward. Total North American PCB shipments decreased 1.5% from July 2012 and bookings increased 10.2% percent year over year, while year to date shipments were down 4.2% and bookings were up 0.1%. Compared to previous month, PCB shipments and bookings were down respectively 13.7% and 3.2%. Bookings exceeded shipments in July, and PCB book-to-bill ratio strengthened to 1.06. Read More

AAMA updates side-hinged door specification.

AAMA has updated AAMA 925-13, Specification for Determining the Vertical Loading Resistance of Side-Hinged Door Systems, which determines ability of side-hinged door systems to remain operable following application of vertical load along lock stile of door leaf. Specification was updated from 2007 document to include requirement for force-to-latch at beginning of testing, minimum number of times testing will be conducted, and repetition of force-to-latch measurements. Two California Firms agree to settle Clean Air Act violations.

MotorScience Inc., MotorScience Enterprise Inc., and their owner, Chi Zheng, have agreed to settle alleged CAA violations stemming from illegal import of 24,478 all-terrain, recreational vehicles into U.S. from China without testing to ensure emissions would meet applicable limits on harmful air pollution. MotorScience and Zheng have agreed to have stipulated judgment entered against them for $3.55 million civil penalty and to pay additional $60,000 civil penalty within 6 months. Read More
