Greener Cleanup Standard has been approved by ASTM committee.

December 4, 2013

On September 15, ASTM International Subcommittee E50.04 on Corrective Action approved new standard on applying greener best management practices to site assessment and cleanup projects: ASTM E2893, Guide for Greener Cleanups. This standard, according to E50 member John Simon, will "enable environmental professionals to assess greener best management practices in a systematic fashion and then prioritize and select the BMPs to apply during a project." Proposed ASTM Standard addresses explanted hip implants.

To addresses collection and analysis of explanted hip implants, Subcommittee F04.22 on Arthroplasty has developed ASTM WK43442, Guide for the Characterization of Material Loss from Conical Taper Junction Between Femoral Head and Stem in Retrieved Modular Hip Prostheses. Once approved, proposed standard will give user series of options and increase awareness of information and approaches to researchers and companies that need to measure material loss from taper joints in orthopedic devices. ISO/TR 17209:2013, Hydraulic fluid power – Two-, three- and four-port screw-in cartridge valves – Cavities with ISO 725 (UN and UNF) threads, is available from National Fluid Power Association (NFPA). This ISO Technical Report specifies dimensions and provides other data relating to cavities with ISO 725 UN and UNF threads in which 2-, 3-, and 4-port screw-in cartridge valves are mounted to ensure dimensional interchangeability. MTConnect Institute and OPC Foundation announce availability of MTConnect-OPC UA (Unified Architecture) Companion specification release candidate.  It has been developed to ensure a uniform information model that can be utilized via MTConnect standard and OPC UA standard. Dr. John R. Sieber is honored for contributions to ASTM.

ASTM International Committee E01 on Analytical Chemistry for Metals, Ores and Related Materials has presented John L. Hague Award to John R. Sieber, Ph.D., research chemist in the Material Measurement Laboratory, Chemical Sciences Division, at NIST. Award is given in recognition of significant and technical contributions relative to initiation, preparation, or development of standards for testing metals and ores. A member of ASTM since 2000, Sieber specializes in X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. Read More

During AAMA Fall Conference, Doug Anderson, manager of EPA's ENERGY STAR® program, provided insight into rationale EPA used in developing Version 6.0 of the ENERGY STAR for Windows, Doors and Skylights program. In response to stakeholder comments on Draft 2, EPA made adjustments in final draft, including extending implementation date to Jan 2015; adjusting window criteria for North-Central and South-Central Zones to 0.30; and adjusting skylight criteria in North and North-Central Zones to 0.48. FAA and Industry Move Forward on U.S. Air Carrier training.

FAA Administrator Michael Huerta called on airline industry to assess and prioritize voluntary actions to improve pilot, flight attendant, and dispatcher training via joint government and industry steering group. This group would collaboratively evaluate best practices from across industry, review recommendations from previous FAA rulemaking advisory committees on training issues, and examine newly identified areas of risk to develop voluntary training guidelines for air carriers. IREC Responds to SGIP rule changes adopted by FERC.

Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) adopted modifications to Small Generator Interconnection Procedures (SGIP), which should facilitate efficient interconnection process for small renewable generators. IREC's Jane Weissman called these rule changes "an important step forward for interconnection in the United States," and added that utilities will be able to process applications for small generators more effectively while maintaining safety and reliability of interconnection process.
