NEMA Publication covers gamma camera performance measurements.

NEMA NU 1-2012 Performance Measurements of Gamma Cameras establishes definitions, quantitative measurements of performance characteristics, and reporting techniques for specification of various gamma camera parameters. As published by NEMA, amendments pertain to intrinsic count rate performance in air, detector high count rate performance, and intrinsic energy resolution. NEMA has published NEMA TC 2-2013 Electrical Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Tubing and Conduit. Standard covers EPC-40, designed for normal-duty applications for above ground and concrete-encased applications or direct burial; and EPC-80, designed for heavy-duty (areas of physical damage) applications for above ground and concrete-encased applications or direct burial. BIO Convention in China to take place November 11-13, 2013.

BIO announced 3rd annual BIO® Convention in China, which will bring together executives from biotechnology, pharmaceutical companies, and investment firms from North America, Europe, and Asia to explore business opportunities in China. BIO applauds renewable chemical legislation.

BIO thanked Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.), Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas), and other original co-sponsors for introducing the Qualifying Renewable Chemical Production Tax Credit Act of 2013, which provides renewable chemical producers access to production tax credits currently available for other renewable energy producers. Legislation will reduce taxes for U.S. producers of renewable chemicals, helping them to commercialize homegrown technology and build new biorefineries in the U.S. Read More

FAA awards $40 million to new Center of Excellence.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced that the FAA has selected a team of universities to lead new Air Transportation Center of Excellence. Led by Washington State University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, COE team will explore ways to meet environmental and energy goals that are part of Next Generation Air Transportation System. 2013 Environmental Justice Small Grants were announced by EPA.

September 17, 2013

EPA announced $1.1 million in competitive grants to 39 non-profit and tribal organizations working to address environmental justice issues nationwide. According to EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy, "These grants help build capacity, raise awareness, and equip communities with tools to address environmental challenges – from climate change impacts to brownfields and water pollution." Grants will benefit low-income, minority, and tribal communities overburdened by harmful pollution. Read More

EPRI Report documents testing of energy-saving devices.

Assessment of Retrofit Energy Savings Device (RESD) Technologies-Phase II describes and documents energy savings, energy efficiency, and limited power quality and performance assessment of 6 retrofit energy-saving devices that EPRI tested. Devices include lighting controls, electric motor controls, and one residential home energy saver. Devices were subjected to several tests to determine manufacturer’s claims and operation when exposed to real-world operating conditions. CSA Group and AGA have formed strategic alliance.

CSA Group formed strategic alliance with Australian Gas Association (AGA), with centerpiece being registration of CSA Group's Guangzhou laboratory facility as Authorized AGA Testing Laboratory. AGA certification provides free market access throughout all Australian states and territories and New Zealand. Manufacturers in southern China wishing to export to Australian and New Zealand markets can now gain AGA Certification based on testing carried out locally at CSA's Guangzhou laboratory. AASHTO Urges Amtrak, States to complete passenger rail agreements.

September 13, 2013

Paying mind to federally mandated October 16 deadline, AASHTO urged Amtrak and state DOTs to complete negotiations over capital investments and operations along state-supported intercity passenger rail corridors. AASHTO recognized commitment states have made in negotiating to complete agreements with Amtrak to sustain service, and AASHTO executive director Bud Wright added that "significant disruption in travel and mobility" will be seen if said agreements are not in place soon. Manufacturing Technology Orders drop in July 2013.

As reported by companies participating in USMTO program, July 2013 U.S. manufacturing technology orders, which totaled $351.21 million, were down 23.6% from June and down 23.6% from July 2012. Year-to-date total of $2,925.12 million makes 2013 down 7.2% compared to 2012. According to AMT President Douglas K. Woods, such activity "is not atypical for summer months" and is concurrent with other readings. Woods also proclaimed a positive "bigger picture" for manufacturing despite seasonal dip. Read More

TRFA has announced that Qi An of the University of Delaware is the winner of the 4th Annual Excellence in Thermoset Polymer Research Award for paper titled “Epoxy-Based Carbon Nanotube/Fiber Hybrid Composites: Nanoscale Hybridization via Electrophoresis.” Because competition was especially close, TRFA is awarding second place prize to Zhan H. Yang, of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, for “Enhancing Mechanical Performance by Heterogeneity-Promoting Staged Fabrications.” Read More
