Hodgson addresses impact of California regulations on U.S.

Michael Hodgson, ConSol founder, spoke at AAMA 2014 Fall Conference. His presentation, "California Regulatory Proceedings Impacting the Nation," discussed how California’s energy policy is driving market to time-of-use energy pricing, incentivizing ways to reduce peak load and detailing how policy impacts energy choices in buildings. California Energy Commission has proposals for 2016 Energy Code, including using high-performance attics/walls, LED lighting, and 0.82 Energy Factor water heaters. Read More

Executive Actions will advance solar deployment.

White House is announcing series of public and private sector commitments and executive actions to advance solar deployment and promote energy efficiency. Some actions include: partnering with military bases to create veterans solar job training pilot; investing $68 million in 540 renewable energy and energy efficiency projects in rural areas; proposing energy conservation standard for commercial unit air conditioners; and strengthening commercial and residential buildings codes. Energy Department announced executive actions to expand renewable energy and cut GHG emissions. To connect skilled veterans to clean energy industry, Solar Instructor Training Network is launching pilot job training program for veterans at 3 military bases. SunShot Initiative announced online tool to chip away at solar soft costs, such as interconnection, permitting, and financing. BIO lauds House of Representatives for passing H.R. 5405, the Promoting Job Creation and Reducing Small Business Burdens Act. This package of bills, sponsored by Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick (R-PA), will support capital formation and reduce regulatory burdens for emerging biotech companies. FAA proposes $417,000 civil penalty against Tecom Industries.

FAA is proposing $417,000 civil penalty against Tecom Industries, Inc. of Thousand Oaks, CA, for violating federal drug and alcohol regulations. FAA alleges company failed to: include 14 safety-sensitive employees in random drug or alcohol testing pools; receive verified negative drug tests for 13 employees before transferring them to safety-sensitive positions; comply with follow-up drug testing program; and perform testing on required minimum percentage of employees in 2012. NEMA supports technology-neutral energy tax provisions.

NEMA commends Senate Finance Committee for holding a hearing on Reforming America’s Outdated Energy Tax Code. According to NEMA President and CEO Kevin J. Cosgriff, association is especially encouraged by Chairman Wyden’s support for moving to a technology-neutral and performance-based approach to energy tax policy. Consumers Energy to install pollution control technology.

September 22, 2014

In settlement with U.S., Consumers Energy, a subsidiary of CMS Energy Corporation, has agreed to install pollution control technology, continue operating existing pollution controls, and comply with emission rates to reduce harmful air pollution from 5 coal-fired power plants located in West Olive, Essexville, Muskegon, and Luna Pier, MI. Settlement will resolve claims that company violated Clean Air Act by modifying facilities in way that caused release of excess sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. Read More

EPA announces new actions to curb potent greenhouse gases.

EPA announced 3 new actions that will help support transition to climate-friendly alternatives to hydrofluorocarbons. They include: listing additional fluorinated and non-fluorinated chemicals as acceptable alternatives; identifying refrigerant management options to reduce HFC emissions from air conditioning and refrigeration equipment; and organizing with stakeholder engagement a series of sector-specific workshops on seeking transitions away from high global warming potential HFCs. EPA adds 5 hazardous waste sites to National Priorities List.

September 19, 2014

EPA is adding 5 hazardous waste sites that pose risks to human health and the environment to the National Priorities List of Superfund sites. They are located in Elkhart, IN; Houma, LA; Newark, NJ; Harleysville, PA; and Bennington VT. In addition, agency is proposing to add 3 additional sites to the list. These include Birmingham AL; Kokomo, IN; and Gibraltar, MI. Superfund program investigates and cleans up the most complex, uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste sites in the country. Read More

ASABE Revises combine and grain harvesting terminology standard.

Revision initiated by American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) to ANSI/ASAE S343.3, Terminology for Combines and Grain Harvesting, aims to align terminology with currently used practices. Last updated in 1990, standard contains terminology pertinent to grain combine design and performance. Overall, standard helps improve communication among engineers and researchers and provides basis for comparative listing of machine specifications. Read More

IPC Comments RAMI Act Passage by U.S. House of Representatives.

On behalf of IPC and its U.S. member companies, IPC president and CEO John Mitchell applauded U.S. House of Representatives for working in bipartisan manner to pass H.R. 2996 (Revitalize American Manufacturing and Innovation (RAMI) Act). FAA Proposes Civil Penalty against Gulfstream Aerospace Corp.

September 18, 2014

FAA proposes $425,000 civil penalty against Gulfstream Aerospace Corp for failing to comply with Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR). Inspection determined some mechanics did not complete required training within established time limits in FAA-approved training manual and missed multiple training deadlines. Also, inspectors could not determine whether some employees completed training or whether records were inaccurate. Allegedly mechanics maintained aircraft without required training. Read More
