ANSI TAG reaches consensus on social responsibility standard.

The U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to the International Organization for Standardization Working Group on Social Responsibility (ISO SR) reached consensus among group members during its February meeting, held to review Committee Draft (CD) of ISO 26000, Social Responsibility and to develop official U.S. position on standard. ISO 26000 is intended to assist in ushering companies, government agencies, and other organizations toward a more sustainable global economy. Read More

Budget Change may cripple multi-year transportation contract.

In letter which commended President Obama for his expressed support for significant increased investment in transportation infrastructure, 8 major transportation and construction organizations also warned that eliminating multi-year contract authority would undermine financing mechanisms for transportation. NAM Board of Directors opposes Employee Free Choice Act.

Citing the possible loss of 600,000 jobs within the first year, the Board of Directors of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) adopted a resolution in opposition to the Employee Free Choice Act. The resolution states "employees should be guaranteed the freedom to join or not join a labor union, without coercion or intimidation." The resolution also criticizes arbitration provisions that might eliminate employers' ability to make critical economic decisions relating to jobs. Read More

Trade Decline Acceleration signals need for economic action.

National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) said that the accelerating decline of trade in manufactured goods, reflected in January 2009 trade data released by the US Department of Commerce, underscores the need for coordinated economic stimulation among trading partners. According to Frank Vargo, NAM Vice President for International Economic Affairs, manufactured goods export and import rates fell 20% from January 2008. Read More

ASTM International Committee F37 is working on ASTM WK22124, Guide for Compliance with Light Sport Airplane Standards, intended to aid industry in understanding how to use applicable LSA standards to meet regulatory requirements. NIST to hold seminar on time and frequency metrology.

NIST to receive $610 million through recovery act.

NIST will receive $610 million in funds as part of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Total includes $220 million in direct appropriations for research, grants, fellowships, and advanced research/measurement equipment and supplies. It also allocates $360 million for research facility construction, $20 million for standards-related work on electronic medical records, as well as $10 million to develop framework for nationwide interoperable smart grid for U.S. electric power system. ASTM proposes standard on use of infrared thermometers.

ASTM International has proposed ASTM WK21204, Guide for the Selection and Use of Wide-Band, Low Temperature Infrared Thermometers, which is being developed by Subcommittee E20.02 on Radiation Thermometry. According to Frank Liebmann of Fluke Corp., standard is designed to increase basic understanding of infrared thermometers in order to minimize potential for inaccurate measurements. Infrared thermometers are used for noncontact temperature measurement. Read More

ASTM announces standard on adhesives symbol for CAD.

ASTM D7447, Practice for Symbolizing Adhesive Applications, provides way for engineers to represent adhesives on computer-aided design drawing. Symbol described in ASTM D7447 originated with focus group that ASC conducted with engineers, designers, and architects. Results indicated that those questioned would be more apt to specify adhesives if they could be represented on CAD drawing, rather than current method of embedding comments in "notes" section. ASTM presents Award of Merit for waste management efforts.

Susan Sorini, lead scientist at Western Research Institute, received an ASTM International Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow, the highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities. It was awarded "for dedicated participation in Committee D34 on Waste Management, including significant technical contributions in the development and maintenance of standards and valued leadership service as a subcommittee and main committee officer." Economic Recovery Act Money released to PA airports.

U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Ray LaHood, announced that Pittsburgh International and Allegheny County Airports will receive the first funding allocations for airport infrastructure projects under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The FAA will allocate 10-million dollars to Pittsburgh International Airport to repair Runway 14-32 and 2-million dollars for Allegheny County will renovate a taxiway and relocate a ramp. Read More
