Case Studies promote effective utility management practices.

Effective Utility Management Collaborating Associations, in collaboration with the US EPA, have released "Effective Water and Wastewater Utility Management Case Studies." A companion document to "Effective Utility Management: A Primer for Water and Wastewater Utilities," it provides concrete examples and how-to assistance for utility managers through profiles of utilities that successfully applied the primer's concepts and tools concerning effective management practices and sustainability. Coalition issues suggestions for efficient federal buildings.

Headed by Doug Read, program director of government affairs for ASHRAE, the High Performance Building Congressional Caucus Coalition has issued recommendations that would allow the widespread development of high-performance federal buildings. The report, Producing High-Performance Federal Buildings, provides recommendations that will aid in the transition to reduced energy consumption as well as increased sustainability, building operation/maintenance, and national resource use. BIO announces speaker line-up for Leadership Summit.

To be held May 18, 2009 at BIO International Convention, Leadership Summit on Food and Fuel Sustainability will cover how population growth and global climate change affect demands for food and fuel, with effects of biotechnology discussed. NAM Vice President approves of new Under Secretary of State.

Frank Vargo, Vice President of National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), issued a statement regarding the nomination of Rep. Ellen Tauscher (D-CA) to serve as Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security. He relayed congratulatory tidings on behalf of NAM for the nomination and lauded her qualifications in terms of "a wealth of knowledge and experience." NIST Data used to develop new boot technique.

Guided by precision X-ray diffraction data from NIST, Hao Li of Motorola, Inc. developed a finely controlled method of depositing strontium titanate onto silicon crystal in stages. The resulting ferroelectric compound might serve as a fast, efficient medium for data storage according to research done 2 years ago by an NIST team led by Joseph Woicik. The new paper adds experimental and technological demonstration, with the ability to write/read/store/erase patterned bits of data. Read More

High-Rise Fire Study offers insight into wind-driven fires.

Fire researchers at NIST have published 2 reports that provide details of how wind affects fires in high-rise buildings. A set of instructional DVDs, based on the research gathered from 8 lab-based experiments, is available for firefighter training and will lead to improved safety for civilians and firefighters. Research was also conducted in an abandoned 7-story building, and the results confirmed the laboratory findings. Read More

Laser Power Meter features nanotube coating.

Using nanotube-coated power measurement device developed by NIST, U.S. military can calibrate high-power laser systems, such as those intended to defuse unexploded mines. Portable unit can make continuous power measurements and will be used to measure light emitted by 10 kW laser systems. Made of multiwalled carbon nanotubes held together by potassium silicate binder, and surrounded by water jacket, sprayed-on coating conducts heat hundreds of times better than conventional coating materials. Draft Publication addresses computer security verification.

Issued for public comment, NIST's draft publication describes method to automate task of verifying computer security settings. Known as Security Content Automation Protocol, specification has been incorporated into scanners for checking security settings in federal computers. Publication provides overview of SCAP, discusses programs for ensuring that products implement SCAP properly, and recommends how federal agencies and other organizations can use SCAP effectively. ANSI and NIST address needs of nuclear industry.

To identify and respond to current needs of nuclear industry, ANSI and NIST have announced formation of Nuclear Energy Standards Coordination Collaborative. Cross-stakeholder forum will facilitate and coordinate timely identification, development, and revision of standards for design, operation, development, licensing, and deployment of nuclear power plants. Standards for other nuclear technologies, including advanced reactor concepts, will also be addressed. Read More

At Plenary Meeting IDSP solicits input on future work.

ANSI held the third plenary meeting of its Identity Theft Prevention and Identity Management Standards Panel (IDSP) from April 27-28, 2009 in Arlington, VA. With close to 100 participants, the meeting took point-in-time look at state of identity theft prevention and identity management. Panel discussions considered progress made on various fronts and looked ahead at areas that still need attention. IDSP is now soliciting input for new workshops on future work by June 1. Read More
