ASTM developing standard for annealed steel conductors.

ASTM International Committee B01 on Electrical Conductors is developing proposed standard WK24210, which addresses concentric-lay-stranded copper-clad steel conductors. Having standard to reference will increase visibility and viability of CCS and ease evaluation of this alternative to solid copper while ensuring all manufacturers are provided necessary product criteria to meet requirements for grounding applications. As U.S. member of ISO, ANSI invites stakeholders to be involved with activities of PC 245, Cross-border trade of second-hand goods, in creating related standard. ANSI has also created and is looking for additional members of TAG to PC 245. Committee PC 231, Brand valuation, is developing draft International Standard 10668, while other opportunities include developments of PC 240, Product recall; ISO PC 239, Network services billing; and PC 243, Consumer product safety. Eleven Organizations to participate in accreditation program.

ANSI's pilot Certificate Accreditation Program (ANSI-CAP) will provide neutral, third-party accreditation that given certificate program meets ASTM E2659-09, Standard Practice for Certificate Programs. By demonstrating compliance to this standard, certificate programs will further development of well-educated and qualified workforce. Addressing Aviation Energy Demand Through Propulsion Efficiency, a public policy panel, will be presented by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) on August 4 at 12:30 pm as part of the 45th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference. It will explore demand-side fuel efficiency, calling for reduced fossil fuel consumption through increased aircraft engine efficiency, decreased aircraft weight, and improved aerodynamic efficiency of fuselages. FAA mandates new rules on ice protection systems.

August 4, 2009

FAA changed certification standards for transport airplanes to require automatic activation of ice protection systems or method to tell pilots when they should be activated. New aircraft designs must include this or definition of visual signs of ice buildup or identification of conductive temperature/moisture conditions. Systems must operate continuously, automatically turn on and off, or alert pilots when they should be cycled. Standard applies to all types of ice protection systems. Read More

Approved by ASTM International Committee F08 on Sports Equipment and Facilities, ASTM F2334 provides standard for basic safety and performance requirements relating to skatepark equipment within above ground public skatepark facility. Standard covers elements intended to be used in performance of skateboarding, in-line skating, and bicycle motocross (BMX) biking, and will be used by skatepark owners and operators, as well as equipment designers and manufacturers. NIST announces 3rd Smart Grid workshop.

Scheduled for August 3-4, in Chantilly, VA, Smart Grid Public Workshop will engage standards development organizations (SDO) in addressing standards-related priorities. Sessions will promote discussing of individual SDO perspectives on roadmap for interoperability standards, reaching agreement on which organizations should resolve specific standards needs, and developing plans/setting timelines for meeting responsibilities. NIST Scientists study how to improve organic solar power.

August 3, 2009

In paper titled "Substrate-dependent interface composition and charge transport in films for organic photovoltaics," NIST scientists have deepened understanding of complex organic films in photovoltaic devices. Current types convert less than 6% of light to electricity at best. By applying X-ray absorption measurements to film interfaces, team found that structure of electrode surface is changed such that it could improve photovoltaic efficiency and lifetime. Read More
