Report Details decline in passenger demand, cargo traffic.

According to a report from the Air Transport Association of America (ATA), passenger revenue fell 18% in April 2009 versus its 2008 counterpart. This marks the sixth consecutive month passenger revenue fell from the prior year. The number of passengers traveling on US airlines in April fell 6.3%, while the average price to fly one mile fell 12.6%. Also, US airlines saw cargo traffic (revenue ton miles) decline 21% year over year in March 2009 for the eighth consecutive month. Read More

Proposed Standard focuses on mass casualty event equipment.

Developed by ASTM International Committee F30 on Emergency Medical Services, ASTM WK23835 provides guidance for how medical equipment is expected to perform under severe conditions of mass casualty event. Standard will be used to educate and assist those involved in selection of medical equipment. It will focus on how non-traditional environments can have deleterious effects on operation of traditional medical equipment and dangers these environments present to patient and caregiver. Jim Sanford named recipient of Standards Leadership Award.

Jim Sanford, Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Market Access and Industrial Competitiveness, has been selected as 2009 recipient of Ronald H. Brown Standards Leadership Award, which recognizes leadership in promoting role of standardization in eliminating global barriers to trade. In his current position, Sanford addresses concerns about non-tariff barriers such as standards and conformity assessment requirements as they relate to Doha Development Round trade negotiation efforts of WTO. NASA Releases interactive, 3D views of space station, rover.

NASA released an interactive, 3D photographic collection of internal and external views of the International Space Station as well as a model of the next Mars Rover. Developed by NASA and Microsoft's Virtual Earth team, the online experience delivers hundreds of photographs via Microsoft's Photosynth photo imaging technology. Click-and-drag interface lets viewers zoom in to see details of space station's modules and solar arrays or zoom out for a more global view of the complex. Read More

ANSI and NIST announce agenda for NESCC meeting.

Scheduled for June 1, 2009 at NIST headquarters in Gaithersburg, MD, Nuclear Energy Standards Coordination Collaborative will provide cross-stakeholder forum to facilitate and coordinate timely identification, development, and revision of standards for design, operation, development, licensing, and deployment of nuclear power plants. FAA and NATCA start mediation talks.

To end ongoing contract dispute, Federal Aviation Administration and National Air Traffic Controllers Association signed process agreement to move negotiations forward as planned. Agreement provides for extensive mediation sessions and for binding resolution of any unresolved issues, guaranteeing new collective bargaining agreement between parties. National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) Vice President for International Economic Affairs, Frank Vargo, released a letter to US Trade Representative Ambassador, Ron Kirk, signed by 2 dozen industry trade associations. The Restoration Industry Association (RIA) has issued a Call for Presentations aimed towards individuals who would like to speak at the 65th Annual Convention and Exhibition, which will take place from March 23-27, 2010 at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta in Atlanta, GA. Presentations may run 50-90 min and should relate to environmental, textiles/floor coverings, property damage repair and restoration, or business issues. BIO Convention to host domestic/international officials.

Taking place May 18-21, 2009, in Atlanta, GA, 2009 BIO International Convention will be attended by Governors of Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, North Carolina, Virginia, and Wisconsin. IPC is inviting researchers, academics, technical experts, and industry leaders to submit abstracts for 2010 IPC APEX EXPO in Las Vegas on April 6-9, 2010. Participants must submit 300-word abstract summarizing original and unpublished work covering case histories, research, and discoveries by July 17, 2009. Qualified Technician Emblem Program for technician-based certificate courses focuses on fire/smoke/water and mold. Program includes bold red, white, and black RIA Qualified starter emblem with designation tab for Mold Remediation Technician (MRT), Mold Remediation Supervisor (MRS), and Certified Restoration Technician (CRT). Revealing profit challenges and opportunities in power transmission/motion control industry, 2009 PT Distributor Performance Report indicates that typical PT/MC distributor experienced increase in gross margins but slower sales growth than anticipated at beginning of year. Actual sales growth rate for median PTDA distributor was 1.7%, while gross margins beat expectations with increase of 3.0%. With IPC support and input from members, CEA®, DIGITALEUROPE, and JGPSSI have released Joint Industry Guide-Material Composition Declaration for Electrotechnical Products-JIG-101 Ed. 2.0. It includes regulatory requirements such as EU REACH and sets minimum requirements for material declaration, but does not preclude companies to inquire on presence of additional substances if needed.
