EPA updates Clean Air Act requirements for gas stations.

Beginning later this year, states may begin process of phasing out vapor recovery systems at the pump since approximately 70% of all vehicles are equipped with on-board systems that capture these vapors. This final rule will ensure that air quality and public health are protected while potentially saving the approximately 31,000 affected gas stations located in mostly urban areas more than $3,000 each year when fully implemented. Hand Soldering Competition will crown new champion in 2012.

Second annual IPC Midwest Hand Soldering Competition will take place August 22-23, 2012 in Schaumburg, IL to determine who reigns as Best Hand-Soldering Technician in the Midwest for 2012. Within half-hour time limit, participants will compete against each other to build functional electronics assembly. IPC Master Instructors will judge assemblies on soldering in accordance with IPC-A-610E Class 3 criteria, overall electrical functionality of assembly, and speed of assembly. Read More

ASTM Committee approves damage resistance testing standard.

May 22, 2012

ASTM D7766/D7766M, Practice for Damage Resistance Testing of Sandwich Constructions, will provide instructions for modifying composite laminate quasi-static indentation and drop weight impact test methods to determine damage resistance properties of sandwich constructions. These properties are required to design composite sandwich constructions, to demonstrate structure is sufficiently durable and exhibits either no damage or limited damage under specific damage-producing events in service. NTSB Makes Several Safety Recommendations to FMCSA.

Safety recommendations H-12-7 through -12, issued by NTSB for Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), include development and enforcement of MCS-150 reporting requirements. Other points deal with information on FMCSA website and SaferBus mobile application, issues concerning National Consumer Complaint Database (NCCDB), as well as development and implementation of NCCDB-based system for information about passenger carriers for prioritizing passenger carrier inspections. Joe Robbins Earns Award of Merit for contributions to G03.

Joe S. Robbins III, CEO of Arizona Desert Testing LLC, received ASTM International's Award of Merit from Committee G03 on Weathering and Durability for his contributions to standards activities. ASTM International member since 1984, Robbins currently chairs G03 and works on several G03 subcommittees. He also chairs Subcommittee G03.02 on Natural and Environmental Exposure Tests, actively participates as member of several other committees, and is member of SAE International. Read More

Monthly Confidence Index dips in May.

ELFA released May 2012 Monthly Confidence Index for Equipment Finance Industry. Overall, confidence in equipment finance market is 59.2, down slightly from April index of 62.1, reflecting uncertainty about pace of U.S. economic growth and concerns about global political and economic factors. When asked to assess business conditions over next 4 months, 17.1% of executives responding said they believe business conditions will improve, down from 23.5% in April. Read More
