NIST Researchers simplify design of molecular electronics.

NIST research team, along with collaborators from University of Maryland, found a way to sandwich organic molecules between silicon and metal. Known as flip-chip lamination, it involves attaching molecules to gold and flipping assembly onto silicon base, with organic molecules sandwiched inside and avoiding problem of heat vaporizing molecules. Process could lead additonal applications such as biosensors, according to Mariona Coll Bau, materials scientist at NIST. Read More

NIST Airframe Tests ensure shielding for flight instruments.

Recent tests by researchers at NIST will provide independent data on how electromagnetic radiation penetrates aircraft, helping to ensure continued air travel safety. NIST performed High Intensity Radiated Field tests on 3 representative aircraft to give FAA officials frame of reference for procedures and data reduction techniques used for typical low-level airframe HIRF attenuation/shielded tests. Information will help FAA ensure commercial aircraft are meeting minimum shielding requirements. Read More

ANSI encourages all full company members that manufacture physical products made or sold in China to join Institute's Manufacturer Member Roundtable. Voluntary Standards cover spacecraft to food equipment.

ANSI will publish snapshots of diverse standards initiatives undertaken in global and national standards. Concerning spacecraft, aerospace systems standard SAE AIR 1168/11-2008, Spacecraft Boost and Entry Heat Transfer, presents theoretical methods for computing and optimizing heat transfer to ensure efficient and safe launches. To protect consumers from food-related illnesses, NSF/ANSI 170-2008, Glossary of Food Equipment Terminology, defines terminology related to food equipment. Read More

Scheduled for Sept 13-15, TRFA 2009 Annual Meeting will include keynote by John R. Dunlop, Senior Technical Outreach Engineer for American Wind Energy Association. Hogentogler Award given to Vincenzo Fioravante, Ph.D.

Dr. Vincenzo Fioravante received the C.A. Hogentogler Award from ASTM International Committee D18 on Soil and Rock for his paper, "Physical Modeling of Landslide Stabilization Methods in an Overconsolidated Clay," which had formally appeared in the 2008 ASTM Geotechnical Testing Journal. This annual award is given to the author or authors of a paper of outstanding merit on soil and/or rock for engineering purposes that is published by the Society. Read More

Equipment Finance Survey shows YOY business volume decline abates.

ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) showed overall new business volume for July declined by 35.1% compared to the same period in 2008. Month-to-month new business volume also decreased 7.7% from June to July. However, year-over-year (YOY) receivables over 30 days increased by 18.2%. Charge-offs decreased to 1.67% from 2.44% in the prior month but rose by 56.1% compared to July 2008, while credit approvals remained flat at 65.5% and declined from 73.3% in July 2008. Read More

FAA names new government affairs advisor.

FAA Administrator, Randy Babbitt, has announced appointment of Roderick D. Hall as new FAA Assistant Administrator for Government and Industry Affairs. As agency's chief congressional liaison, Hall will serve as advisor to administrator and agency representative on matters concerning Congress and other government organizations. Hall spent last 9 years as congressional staffer, most recently as deputy chief of staff and associate professional staff member to Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Texas. Read More

ASTM encourages paper submittal for international symposium.

ASTM International Symposium on Surface and Dermal Sampling will be held October 14-15, 2010, in San Antonio, TX. Papers submitted for publication in Journal of ASTM International will be featured on 1st day, while 2nd day will feature presentations not to be published, allowing for open discussion of current issues. Online abstract submittal form must be submitted, with 250-300 word preliminary abstract, by January 14, 2010, with notification of acceptance by March 14, 2010. Read More

TIA accepts comments in response to NHTSA proposed rules.

In response to NHTSA Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for Tire Fuel Efficiency Consumer Information Program, TIA points out that poster or pamphlet should be just component of campaign. The organization proposes to bridge communication gap between salesperson and consumer by training tire sellers and enacting public outreach campaign. Under NHTSA's supervision and advisement, TIA program will use current training models used to educate technicians on maintenance/diagnostic techniques. Read More

Manufacturing Executives Poll indicates economic recovery.

According to a poll conducted in late July, 53% of questioned manufacturing executives indicated they have seen/experienced signs that signal the start of economic recovery. Positive signals included increases in new sales inquiries (27%) and orders (23%), reduced layoffs (18%), and the need to replenish inventory levels (14%). Additionally, 27% of those polled agree with economists' forecasts that the economy will return to moderate growth in the third and fourth quarters of 2009. Read More
