Houston NextGen Project completed ahead of schedule.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and FAA Administrator Michael Huerta announced successful implementation of the Houston Metroplex NextGen airspace redesign project, which will deliver more on-time flights for passengers while reducing pollution. Airspace improvements will reduce distances flown by as much as 648,000 nautical miles annually, based on flight plans. This will save up to 3 million gallons of fuel and reduce carbon emissions by as much as 31,000 metric tons each year. Read More

ASABE seeks input on manure spreader standard revision.

ASABE is revising ASAE S324.1, Volumetric Capacity of Box Type Manure Spreaders – Dual Rating Method, and is seeking comment on proposed draft. Last revised in 1986, standard is being updated for clarity and simplification of calculation process. Proposed revision will be applicable to vertical beater-type machines and add a box-width relation to heaped capacity for improved accuracy. Read More

As part of U.S. Department of Energy's SunShot Solar Outreach Partnership, ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability U.S.A. and IREC present a series of 3 webinars on solar permitting and inspection. Series will review components of rooftop solar permitting processes, and share best practices and tools for improving them. ISPE announces launch of Metrics Pilot Program.

ISPE has announced official launch of its Metrics Pilot Program, which is headed by ISPE’s PQLI® Quality Metrics Team, and is now open to any drug manufacturing company that is registered with FDA. Primary objectives are to test harmonization of definitions for industry consensus metrics that represent both leading and lagging indicators, and to test feasibility of data collection across companies who are at different maturity levels with their own internal metrics programs. See-Through Sensors could enhance smartphone intelligence.

As described in "Making Smart Phones Smarter with Photonics," which appeared in OSA's Optics Express journal, researchers from Montreal and New York-based company Corning Inc describe laser-written, light-guiding systems efficient enough to be developed for commercial use. This technology could open up new real estate in phone by embedding glass with layer upon layer of sensors, including ones that could take temperature, assess blood sugar levels, or even analyze DNA. Size of 3D Printing Marketplace doubles at International CES.

CEA announced that the 3D printing footprint at 2015 International CES® has doubled from 2014 CES. Returning for its second year, 3D Printing Marketplace, presented by TCT Magazine + Personalize, will feature more than 30 innovative companies showcasing latest advancements in 3D printing technology. NREL Boosts Battery Power and Durability using nanotubes.

NREL's Energy Storage group, working with Energy Department, automotive battery developers, and car manufacturers, aim to enhance performance and durability of advanced lithium-ion batteries via crystalline nanotubes and nanorods to enable clean, secure transportation future. Scientists at NREL are able to create useful objects as well as guide their formations into particular shapes. Nanotubes and nanorods can be combined to aid battery charging while reducing swelling and shrinking. Read More

EPA Identifies Safer Substitutes for toxic flame retardants.

U.S. EPA announced safer alternatives, as identified through Design for the Environment (DfE) Alternatives Assessment Program, to flame retardants hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and pentabromodiphenyl ether (pentaBDE) used in such products as building insulation and products with flexible polyurethane foam. Respectively, report on alternatives to HBCD and updated draft report on alternatives to pentaBDE name butadiene styrene brominated copolymer and oligomeric phosphonate polyol. Read More

EPA Requires Ford to Correct Fuel Economy for 6 vehicle models.

June 20, 2014

To correct errors found in internal audit, Ford Motor Company is revising fuel economy estimates for 6 of its vehicle models. Fuel economy labels on affected vehicles must be corrected within 15 days. Ford will re-label 4 versions of Ford Fiesta, Hybrid and Energi versions of Ford Fusion, C-Max Hybrid and Energi, and Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. Most labels will change between 1 and 5 mpg. Also, Ford has agreed to implement enhanced validation tests for future vehicles under EPA oversight.

AEM launches exclusive online REACH training.

Available through AEM's Market Access Pathway training platform, REACH training will educate members about compliance with REACH regulations that could otherwise cut off global access to highly regulated markets. Training modules will teach companies and the vendors in their supply chain how to document substances used in manufacturing, their origin, and concentrations in each product. ASC challenges DTSC Priority Product profile.

Questioning both inaccurate and incomplete information referenced in the Department of Toxic Substance Control’s Priority Product profile for spray polyurethane foam systems, ASC urged Department officials to remove the document from their website until all corrections were made. ASC also urged DTSC to consider developing an external advisory committee—comprised of experts familiar with the products under review—to evaluate documents for accuracy before they are made public.
