NTSB investigates 2014 truck-motorcoach collision.

July 27, 2015

After investigating a truck-motorcoach collision that resulted in 10 fatalities in Orland, CA, NTSB recommended that motorcoach interiors be designed with improved flammability requirements as well as improved emergency exits, and that event data recorders be installed on commercial trucks and motorcoaches. In the crash, a 2007 Volvo truck-tractor operated by FedEx Freight, Inc. crossed a 58 ft wide median, struck a 2013 Nissan Altima, and then collided head-on with a 2014 Setra motorcoach. Read More

ELFA releases economic outlook for Q3.

According to Q3 update to 2015 Equipment Leasing & Finance U.S. Economic Outlook, investment in equipment and software is expected to grow 5% in 2015 and GDP is expected to grow 2.6%. As U.S. economy rebounds from disappointing Q1, report predicts that business confidence will improve, which should encourage greater investment over second half of 2015. Outlook for 12 individual equipment and software verticals tracked in report is mixed, with some sectors outperforming others. Read More

ANSI Seeks Comments on proposed ISO field activity on SRFs.

ANSI invites all interested stakeholders to submit comments on International Organization for Standardization's (ISO) proposal for new field of activity on solid recovered fuels (SRFs). Comments due by end of business day on August 31, 2015. Work item proposal, submitted by Finnish Standards Association SFS, specifies that intended program of work for standardization of solid recovered fuels would include basic standards, testing and analysis standards, and technical specifications. Guidelines updated for Common Patent Policy implementation.

World Standards Cooperation partners — the International Electrotechnical Commission, International Organization for Standardization, and International Telecommunication Union —have issued updated guidelines for implementation of Common Patent Policy for ITU-T/ITU-R/ISO/IEC intended to address patented technology in international standards. Policy encourages early disclosure and identification of patents that may relate to standards under development, as greater transparency promotes efficiency. Read More

NEMA endorses IDEA as preferred source for product data.

During NEMA Board of Governors meeting, NEMA endorsed Industry Data Exchange Association as the electrical industry’s preferred source for timely, synchronized manufacturer-supplied product data for the electrical products supply channel. IDEA’s Industry Data Warehouse includes more than 950,000 fully attributed stock-keeping units that consist of such particulars as pricing, packaging, and safety data; digital media; installation video links; and images. Retired chemicals expert Donald Snyder, Ph.D., formerly of Atotech, received Frederick A. Lowenheim Memorial Award from ASTM International Committee B08 on Metallic and Inorganic Coatings. Member of ASTM and Committee B08 since 1975, Snyder was honored for his competence and professionalism in technology of metallic and inorganic finishes. BIO CEO Participates in Stakeholder Forum on Section 9003 Program.

BIO's Jim Greenwood presented and participated in national stakeholder forum, hosted by U.S. Department of Agriculture, to announce new Biorefinery, Renewable Chemical, and Biobased Product Manufacturing Assistance Program (Section 9003 Program). "With proper implementation," Greenwood said, "we believe the Section 9003 program will provide greater access to capital and equity for biorefineries...and will help spur the private investment needed to finance important new innovations." ANSI invites nominations for persons to serve on its Personnel Certification Accreditation Committee (PCAC). Nominations Committee seeks national experts in personnel certification, accreditation, and policy development. Duties include creating recommended policies and procedures for ANSI PCAP, determining accreditation status of certification bodies, and providing input and advice regarding operational issues.
