EPA releases list of cities with most Energy Star buildings.

EPA announced sixth annual list of top 25 U.S. metropolitan areas with the most Energy Star certified buildings. Energy Star certified buildings, including office buildings, schools, hotels, and retail stores, use an average of 35% less energy and are responsible for 35% less carbon dioxide emissions than typical buildings. Top 10 cities on the list include: Los Angeles; Washington, D.C.; Atlanta; New York; San Francisco; Chicago; Dallas; Denver; Philadelphia; and Houston. Read More

Translucent Panel redirects sunlight to urban alleyways.

In dense urban centers, many people live and work in dim and narrow streets surrounded by tall buildings that block sunlight. To alleviate the problem, Egyptian researchers have developed a corrugated, translucent panel that is mounted on rooftops and hung over the edge at an angle, where it spreads sunlight onto street below. Researchers describe their design in a paper published in Energy Express, a supplement of The Optical Society’s open-access journal Optics Express. Read More

SME Leadership Series trains manufacturing leaders.

SME Leadership Series marked its 8th year with session in Atlanta, March 28–29. Interactive workshop provides workforce development to attendees by demonstrating how to create structure as a leader, examining why people choose to follow leaders, and highlighting behavioral traits of successful leaders. IPC Elects Renee Michalkiewicz as TAEC chair for 2 years.

Renee Michalkiewicz, MIT, general manager, Trace Laboratories, Baltimore, has been elected chair of IPC Technical Activities Executive Committee (TAEC) for 2-year term. According to Michalkiewicz, one of her goals include working with TAEC task group to produce plans to improve standards development process and time required to go to publication. AMT Urges Action on 2014 bipartisan manufacturing agenda.

Letter sent by AMT's Board of Directors to U.S. congressional leadership requests action on bipartisan manufacturing agenda in 2014. Specifically, said letter urges House and Senate leaders to consider legislation where common ground exists and points to several initiatives with bipartisan support that would strengthen U.S. manufacturing if enacted into law: reauthorization of America COMPETES Act; renewal of trade promotion authority; and passage of tax, regulatory, and immigration reforms. Biotech Leader testifies at Congressional hearing.

The House Subcommittee on Capital Markets and Government Sponsored Enterprises held a hearing titled "Legislative Proposals to Enhance Capital Formation for Small and Emerging Growth Companies." Brian Hahn, Chief Financial Officer of GlycoMimetics, Inc. presented testimony at the hearing on enhancements to the capital markets that can increase access to investors and decrease unnecessary regulatory burdens for emerging biotech companies trading on the public market. BIO Honors Renee Ellmers as BIO Legislator of the Year.

BIO announced its selection of Congresswoman Renee Ellmers (R-NC) as Legislator of the Year for 2013–2014. Calling Ellmers "a champion of America's biotechnology industry," BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood cited her leadership and support of such critical issues as Medicare Part B, Medicare Part D, and release of sequestered of FDA user fees. Mazak Corp. is doubling support for SME Education Foundation's Mazak Manufacturing Technology Scholarship, which will provide 4 full-tuition scholarships for next 2 academic years (2014–2015 and 2015–2016). Delaware Senate passes biologic medicine legislation.

BIO and Delaware BioScience Association commend Delaware State Senate for passing legislation designed to create pathway for the substitution of interchangeable biologic medicines. AIM honors HID Global for RFID technology innovation.

AIM has selected HID Global of Austin, TX as winner of 2014 RFID Case Study Competition. Bodega Norton Winery, one of Argentina’s leading vintners, wanted to automate vineyard’s harvest tracking and payment system without fundamentally changing underlying grape-gathering process. HID Global provided each harvester an armband equipped with unique HID Global contactless card, tagged grape collection bins with HID Epoxy Disc tags, and outfitted vineyard supervisors with NFC-enabled smartphones.
