SDSU offers tours of animal research facilities.

To kick off 2014 BIO Livestock Biotech Summit, South Dakota State University, South Dakota Biotech Association, and select Brookings firms will provide attendees the opportunity to tour the campus and select facilities at no cost. Summit will highlight latest advances in livestock biotechnology, address societal concerns surrounding care and use of agricultural animals in both biomedical applications and food production, and explore value of intellectual property to animal biotechnology. Safety Recommendations address loss of helicopter engine power.

Recommendations made to U.S. Department of the Interior and U.S. Coast Guard by NTSB included identifying and developing systems and procedures to mitigate risk of ingestion of raw gas discharges as well as subsequent implementation by fixed offshore oil platform operators. Recommendation to American Petroleum Institute included finalizing API Recommended Practice 2L revisions to address venting of raw gases as risk to turbine-powered helicopters operating near fixed offshore oil platforms. IPC releases F revisions of electronics assembly standards.

With F revisions, IPC J-STD-001, Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies, and IPC-A-610, Acceptability of Electronic Assemblies have been updated to include technical advances in solder on plastic surface mount components, new criteria for P-style and solder-charged Butt/I SMT terminations, and change to void criteria for BGAs. Also, enhancements have been made to language within documents to provide ease of use and clarity. Read More

HI Executive Director Retirement sparks search for replacement.

September 4, 2014

Hydraulic Institute (HI) announced planned retirement, effective June 30, 2015, of Robert K. Asdal, who has served as HI Executive Director since February 1, 1991. HI Board Chairman Dennis Wierzbicki complemented Asdal's "ceaseless energy, enthusiasm and ideas" that helped continually grow HI programs and services. Continuing, Wierzbicki noted that "a worthy successor" is currently being sought via work with search committee and board. Read More

EPA releases 3 final chemical risk assessments.

September 3, 2014

EPA released final risk assessments for specific uses of 3 chemicals found in common household products. Risk assessment for Dichloromethane, which is widely used in paint stripping products, indicates health risks to both workers and consumers who use these products, and to bystanders in workplaces and residences where DCM is used. Risk assessments for antimony trioxide used as a synergist in halogenated flame retardants, and HHCB uses as fragrance ingredient in products did not show concerns. Read More

North American PCB Business reflects normal seasonal slowdown.

September 3, 2014

July findings from IPC's North American Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Statistical Program show total North American PCB shipments down 2.3% from July 2013, leaving year-to-date (YTD) shipment growth flat at -0.6%. Compared to June, PCB shipments were down 13.0%. PCB bookings decreased 6.3% compared to July 2013, putting YTD order growth rate at -6.1%, and order growth declined 14.4% compared to June. North American PCB book-to-bill ratio remained at parity at 1.00. Read More
