BSA Winter Meeting draws record number of attendees.

At BSA's 2010 Winter Meeting in Tampa, FL, on January 17-19, record number of attendees included 30% more distributors than manufacturers, 2 first time attendees, and 1 guest. Scott Lynch, President of ABMA, explained how BSA authorized bearing distributors can partner with ABMA to assist in addressing $600 billion/year counterfeiting problem. Metalforming Economic Report indicates rising optimism.

As economic indicator for manufacturing, January 2010 PMA Business Conditions Report expressed optimism of sampled U.S./Canadian metalforming companies. Economic activity improvements were expected by 45% of participants, while 45% predict no change, and 10% expect activity to decline. Also, companies anticipated uptick in incoming orders during next 3 months, while number of metalforming companies with portion of workforce on short time or layoff dipped to 52% in January. FMA receives Platinum Partner Award.

FMA received Platinum Partner Award to honor its commitment and contributions to Austin Polytechnical Academy, a manufacturing and engineering high school in Chicago Public Schools. FMA funded $20,000 grant request from Chicago Manufacturing Renaissance Council to support APA's FIRST Robotics Team, a summer manufacturing camp for youth, and the school's new Manufacturing Technology Center, which is a computer controlled equipment center for hands-on engineering practice. PTDA Manufacturing Sales Report shows monthly US decrease.

Following gains in October 2009, US manufacturers' sales decreased while Canadian manufacturers posted no change in November 2009 according to PTDA's Market Outlook Report. US manufacturers' sales dropped 6.1% from October 2009 sales, following 3 months of increasing sales, while year-to-date sales figures comparisons for November still reflect sales declines. US manufacturers' year-to-date sales are down 27.9%, and Canadian manufacturers' year-to-year sales are off 25.8%. Read More

NADCA Report aids aluminum die casting coating selection.

Performance Evaluation of Surface Finishes on Aluminum Die Castings examines results from 15 surface finishes applied to 15 aluminum die castings that were tested in 30-day accelerated corrosion test. This report reveals 6 surface finishes were continuing to provide protection, while remaining 9 coatings were determined to have failed - offering little or no further corrosion protection. PTDA Foundation Vanguard Campaign hits targets.

As 2009 drew to a close, PTDA Foundation challenged association's members to lead the charge in linking young adults to career paths in industrial distribution. Eighteen employers rose to the occasion by making 2010 PTDA Foundation contribution before the year ended, helping PTDA Foundation to surpass its Vanguard goal and raise $51,350. Along with support of other Alliance Partners, distributors, and manufacturing partners, these gifts funded a number of advances in ICP program. Read More

NIST announces officers of Smart Grid Standards Panel.

NIST announced that John D. McDonald, general manager of marketing for GE Energy's transmission and distribution business, will serve as chair of Smart Grid Interoperability Panel. Board also chose John F. Caskey, senior director of Power Equipment Division at NEMA to be vice chair and George Bjelovuk, managing director for marketing, research, and program development at American Electric Power, to serve as secretary. Secretary Chu announces projects to improve vehicle efficiency.

January 19, 2010

At an event in Indiana, Secretary Chu announced 9 projects totaling more than $187 million to improve fuel efficiency for heavy-duty trucks and passenger vehicles. Funding includes more than $100 million from American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and with a private cost share of 50%, will support nearly $375 million in total research, development, and demonstration projects across the country. By 2015, projects expect to create over 6,000 jobs, many in manufacturing and assembly. Read More

SME Announced first woman president and 2010 Board of Directors.

Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) elected Barbara M. Fossum, PhD, FSME to lead the organization as 2010 president and was officially sworn in, with the rest of the 2010 SME Executive Committee, on November 14. As president, Fossum plans to coordinate efforts among professional societies and other organizations to achieve key manufacturing community objectives. She would also like to refine manufacturing's career option image and develop educational paths for future generations. Read More
