ANSI Paper Competition celebrates World Accreditation Day 2010.

Interested stakeholders are invited to participate in ANSI's 2010 paper competition by submitting one paper of no more than 2,000 words that highlights value of accreditation in facilitating acceptance of products, services, and professional credentials across borders. Authors are encouraged to cite concrete examples that demonstrate how globally accepted conformity assessment solutions have enabled trade and opened new markets. NAM commends Senate on passage of tax extenders in Jobs Bill.

Following passage of American Workers, State, and Business Relief Act of 2010 by Senate, NAM President John Engler said that its tax and pension relief provisions are vital to job creation. He states that "by providing additional time for companies to make required pension payments, the retirement security provisions will put cash back in the hand of employers, allowing them to grow and create jobs." BSA 2010 Convention breaks registration records.

Hydrogen, Fuel Cell Leaders brief Senate on clean vehicle technology issues.

Hydrogen and fuel cell industry experts joined Senator Daniel Akaka to brief Senate staff on balance needed between industry and government commitments. Until there are enough fuel cell vehicles to support stations that service them, said stations need continued government investment. But funding hydrogen and fuel cell development/deployment should not occur at expense of other technologies, because balance of advanced transportation alternatives is required to compete with incumbent fuels. IPC developing best industry practices for IP protection.

IPC Intellectual Property Committee will release its first draft of standard for protection of IP designed into PCBs at open meeting, April 6, at IPC EXPO®. Titled "Best Industry Practices for Intellectual Property Protection," draft addresses issues such as physical and information security, employee data access, computer networks, and destruction of scrap metal. Layered Graphene Sheets could solve hydrogen storage issues.

According to research at NIST and University of Pennsylvania, graphene - carbon formed into sheets a single atom thick - appears to be promising base material for capturing hydrogen. Graphene does not store hydrogen well in its original form, but if oxidized graphene sheets are stacked atop one another, connected by molecules that link layers to one another and maintain space between them, graphene-oxide framework can accumulate hydrogen and potentially store hydrogen for fuel cells. NIST helps develop testing infrastructure for health IT systems.

As mandated by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, NIST and Department of Health and Human Services are working with health IT system vendors, standards organizations, certification bodies, and system implementers to develop suite of software tools to support health IT testing infrastructure. Tools are intended to help vendors test health IT products and ensure basic functionality, such as the calculation of body mass index or proper formatting of common electronic health records in XML. From March 29-31, experts will gather at "U.S. Workshop on Roadmap for Digital Preservation Interoperability Framework" to develop a standards roadmap on preserving vast amount of digital data over long term. According to study by International Data Corp, by 2011 there will be 1,610 exabytes of digital information. ANSI invites comments on U.S.-China conformity assessment.

ANSI has teamed with U.S.-China Business Council (USCBC) in support of U.S. Department of Commerce project on conformity assessment issues in China. Project aims to include roundtable discussions with U.S. and Chinese industry, government, and conformity assessment practitioners to address concerns by U.S. companies.
