Princeton Review Releases Guide to Green Colleges

Ahead of Earth Day on April 22, The Princeton Review, in partnership with U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), released its fourth annual “Guide to Green Colleges” today. The guide features the top colleges that have demonstrated a commitment to sustainability, with school profiles on eco-initiatives and career advice for green jobs.

The latest guide reflects a recent applicant trend: Most prospective college students (62 percent) indicated that having information about a college’s commitment to the environment would play a factor in their decision in attending a school, according to survey findings from  Princeton Review’s 2013 “College Hopes and Worries Survey.”

“Selecting a four-year college is a big choice. When we learned that the majority of prospective college students factor a school’s commitment to sustainability into their selection criteria, we wanted to ensure we were providing the best information,” said Rachel Gutter, director of the Center for Green Schools at USGBC, in a statement release.

The green schools were selected and scored from 60 to 99, based on a Princeton Review survey of hundreds of colleges across the nation, which have sustainability-related programs, policies, and practices in place. Criteria to get on the green list included whether a school offers an environmental studies major, minor or concentration, and whether new campus buildings are required to be certified LEED Silver, among other requirements.

In the free 215-page guide, prospective college students can find more detailed information on school programs, a glossary of “green terms,” getting into a green college, and advice for living on a green campus.
