So How Does it Feel to Win a $58,000 Bike?
On a Friday morning in May, Angela Stanett, a bookkeeper at Hydraulic Services Inc., in Columbus, OH, got an unexpected phone call and received the news that nearly 105,000 people had been hoping to hear.
She learned that she was the lucky winner of the ThomasNet.com Chopper Giveaway Contest and would be riding off in a T-Rex Soft Tail motorcycle, custom built by Orange County Choppers, the well-known motorcycle shop featured in the popular Discovery Channel show "American Chopper."
I interviewed Angela about a week before she received the bike, which is valued at approximately $58,000. The Ohio resident (pictured below in dark blue receiving the keys from ThomasNet.com's Michelle Mischler) seemed extremely surprised and even a bit shaken by her incredible luck.
IMT: How did you react when you first heard the news?
AS: (Chuckling) I was having a real problem digesting that one. I thought there was no way, no how I had won the chopper.
IMT: I heard it took Tom (Thomas Marren, the chief motorcycle logistician at ThomasNet.com) several attempts to convince you that you actually were the winner.
AS: Yup. I just couldn't believe him.
IMT: I'm still not sure you believe it.
AS: Oh no, I'm getting there. It was shocking, very shocking. I never win anything. So for me to win it, it was very shocking.
IMT: Did you tell any of your friends or family members that you had won? Were they shocked, too?
AS: Oh yeah, my whole neighborhood is. They're all into bikes and stuff like that. They ride Harleys.
IMT: So the news has already spread to your whole neighborhood?
AS: Yes. To six neighbors. They're going "when are we getting this, when are we getting this?" They're already insisting, "we get to ride."
IMT: What did you do after you got the news?
AS: After Tom e-mailed me pictures, I e-mailed the pictures to my husband, Joseph, at work because his first reaction was 'no way' too.
A lot of the guys at his work are like, "Oh my goodness!" As proof, I showed him the pictures and went "look what I won." Now, I keep teasing my husband that he only gets the tailpipe. He keeps saying "OUR bike," and I say, nu-uh, it's "MY bike. You get the tailpipe."
IMT: Sounds like he told more people than you did.
AS: We pretty much told everybody, and he has it up on his computer at work. For about a week, every time he turned around from his computer, a bunch of the guys would be standing there looking at it.
IMT: So do you plan to do all the riding? Are you letting him ride it at all?
AS: He'll ride it. I'll probably ride it once or twice.
IMT: You don't want to ride it more or take it to work or...
AS: I might. I don't have my license yet since I've always ridden as a passenger. I ride with my neighbors. I have always enjoyed bikes. We were actually thinking about buying one soon. Our kids are getting older so now we can go have time to ourselves and enjoy the things that we like and both of our kids enjoy motorcycles.
IMT: Tom says that you just started learning how to drive a motorcycle.
AS: Yes.
IMT: When did you start?
AS: Well, I've driven before. It's been 10 years since I drove a bike.
But I've ridden for a long time. In fact, I've been in a motorcycle accident as a passenger. But, it was not our fault. Some guy turned in front of us and I broke my ankle as a result. I came out of it and got right back on a bike. In fact, I was still in my cast when I got back on a bike as a passenger.
But I haven't driven in years so now I'm back into practicing again.
IMT: So will winning the chopper speed up your quest for that license?
AS: Oh yes.
IMT: What is it about riding that appeals to you? Despite being in an accident, you're still...
AS: The relaxation. We have a Jeep. Since we didn't have money for a bike, we always just took the top down on the Jeep and went for a ride. The wind going through your hair...just the relaxation...these are the reasons I just love to ride.
When my husband first got his Jeep, anytime I was stressed out about a test, we'd go for a ride. So now I have a motorcycle to do that on.
IMT: So this will be your very first motorcycle?
AS: I've owned one before, a Kawasaki.
IMT: But this is going to be your first experience riding a chopper?
AS: Oh yes. To get it home, I'm probably gonna trailer it home. At least for a little while, I'm gonna use a trailer to transport it. My sister has a trailer that holds bikes since my sister has two bikes. Actually, there's a lot of us that ride bikes in my family. For instance, my sister and bother-in-law both ride. I have aunts and uncles that ride, and my cousins that I work with ride also.
IMT: You just decided to enter the contest while visiting ThomasNet.com?
AS: I was checking on an address for a customer who had called, on doing the same thing that we do. And I just caught sight of "enter for an OCC chopper" and I just thought "what the heck." So I entered for the heck of it. I never win anything so I thought, "this isn't going to happen." But I entered anyway.
IMT: Had you heard about the "American Chopper" TV show?
AS: I watch it all the time.
IMT: You're a fan?
AS: Oh yes.
IMT: My last question is...you know how the chopper looks like...do you like the color green?
AS: (Chuckling) Not really, but I do like that one. It's not my favorite color but I like when I've seen it and when I've seen the picture. One of the guys where my husband works printed it out on Kodak paper. And it looks really sharp.
IMT: Wait till you've seen it in person.
AS: I'm so excited.
Angela received the chopper on June 28th. Here's some of the TV coverage.
