Assignment Completed: Twenty Things That Work.

By Mark Devlin

Wireless? No, too many glitches. Computers? Ditto. The cable company? Too arrogant. The vast right-wing conspiracy? Well, yeah, but it didn't make the list. Hope you enjoy, and feel free to add your own. Could we come up with 50 Things That Actually Work by '06?

FedEx
They know where your package is down to about a ten-foot radius. Usually.

Computer-Aided Design
Speaks for itself, though the linked article also speaks well.

Hype
Marketers tell us we that should be better, thinner, stronger, faster; with more stuff, from breast implants to SUVs. We believe them.

Gmail
Over 2 gigs of space and counting. You never have to delete e-mail. That works. Just take it out of beta. Let me know if you need an invite.

Spam
Works very well, as long as the spammers don't get your Gmail address.

The Onion
This is great stuff. Always smart, always creative, always very funny. Five "Things that Work" stars.

TechRepublic.com E-Mail Blasts
God, make them stop working.

The iPod
I've said enough about this.

The Thomas Register
Okay, you might see this as kissing up. But nobody does it better. That works.

AMD
Works very well, especially the new dual-core chip. Fun stuff, but needs Hype (see above) to make us believe that we can't live without it.

Big Fish
Dreamers, storytellers, reality, fiction, true love. What's not to work?

Superchargers
Some say they're a cheap shortcut to horsepower. The problem with that would be?

Microsoft
Much as I hate to admit it…

Engineers
Look around. Thank an engineer.

NASA
Okay, it's not perfect. For a variety of reasons, however, it works. Quite well.

Opinion
Still works, along with free speech. Enjoy it while you can.

Healthcare
Okay…I know, I know. But think about it. We're living longer. Something's working.

Maui
Paradise, delivered via webcam.

The World Toilet Organization
Hey, I'm serious here.

Pets
Nothing works better.

Cheers, and enjoy your weekend.
