The Top States for Manufacturing Job Gains
USA-90x90

New state employment data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics reveal the top states where manufacturing employment had the greatest gains last month, with Indiana leading the country, adding 4,300 new net workers in June.

Although Indiana’s unemployment rate rose from 8.3 in May to 8.4 percent in June, officials said that the manufacturing job growth last month reflected the largest one month gain in almost nine years, according to The Associated Press, which noted that The Department of Workforce Development indicates that the state has the largest percentage of manufacturing employment as a portion of the private sector in the country.

California also had recent major hiring gains, with an additional 2,600 jobs in the sector in June, followed by Georgia (1,700), Wisconsin (1,500) and Texas (1,300).

Other new reports indicate that Georgia also saw significant manufacturing gains over the past year, with 7,779 manufacturing jobs added over the past year, between May 2012 and May 2013, according to Manufacturers’ News, Inc., which publishes the 2014 Georgia Manufacturers Register. It found that a food products manufacturing accounted for the most industrial employment in Georgia, up by 3.1 percent from the previous year with 68,692 of these jobs in the state.

Furthermore, earlier this month, the Triangle Business Journal published a slideshow list of the country’s best states for new manufacturing jobs, based on data compiled by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). Michigan ranked the highest in the top 20 states for manufacturing job creation between December 2009 and March 2013, followed by Texas, which ranked ahead of Indiana.

Here are the top 10 states for manufacturing jobs. For the full list, see the slideshow here:
