“Desalination and water reuse in industry has emerged as one of the most important themes in the water sector over the past five years,” declared research firm Global Water Intelligence (GWI) in a report last year. “Over the next five years the technologies associated with salt removal and the reuse of wastewater will become an essential part of sustainable economic growth.”

Driving the desalination trend is the simple reality of environmental limits and water scarcity. As I reported in May, the United Nations (UN) says that about 1.2 billion people, or one-fifth of the world’s population, live in areas of water scarcity and that “By 2025, 1.8 billion people will be living in countries or regions with absolute water scarcity, and two-thirds of the world’s population could be living under water-stressed conditions.” Read more
