The biannual event, presented by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, will run from May 14-16 in West Springfield Mass. More than 500 exhibitors will be organized in five exhibit categories including design, engineering, and rapid technologies; tooling, workholding and machining accessories; automation, quality and process improvement; plant, energy and environmental efficiency; and precision manufacturing equipment and systems.

Highlights will include several conference tracks that underscore core workforce development issues from both educator and industry perspectives, including a session “Addressing the Manufacturing Skills Gap Through Active Collaboration,” which will be presented by Ted Bauer, the program manager at Workforce Development Program, MassMEP.

“There’s no denying that manufacturing is experiencing a job crisis, with hundreds and thousands of jobs currently unfilled,” said Kim Farrugia, SME senior show manager.

Educational events will include EASTEC’s Dream it Do it Manufacturing Student Challenge on May 16, when qualified students will participate in two category challenges. The first challenge requires students to create a plan to improve process and waste for process improvement in manufacturing, while the latter will involve creating a CAD 3D drawing based off a part used or manufactured by their sponsor manufacturer.
