Viral Video Highlights Wealth Inequality in America

Over the past week, a YouTube video that highlights the wealth inequality in America has seized the nation’s attention. Using data from several sources, the approximately six-minute video compares how 5,000 Americans think the wealth in this country is divided, as opposed to reality.

In the video, uploaded by user “politizane” a narrator reveals: “While the richest 1 percent take home almost a quarter of the income today (24 percent), in 1976, they took home only 9 percent, meaning their share of income has nearly tripled in the last 30 years.”

It also claims that while the top 1 percent owns half of the country’s stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, the bottom 50 percent own only half a percent of such investments.

Other media outlets are highlighting how corporate earnings have continued to rise, and how the sequester, set to impact businesses, will have little to no impact on Wall Street profits, MSNBC reports.

During the closing statement, the narrator poses a controversial question: “Do you really believe that the [average] CEO is working 380 times harder than his average employee?”
