According to a 2011 report from the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), “Today’s priority of reducing fuel consumption places an emphasis on mass reduction, with the assumption that other performance criteria will not be unduly compromised” — criteria such as structural stiffness, crashworthiness, comfort, and standards around noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).

Obviously, smaller cars use less fuel, so manufacturers have continued to introduce smaller vehicles and have achieved greater fuel savings that way. But not everyone is going to buy a Smart car or a MINI — the market also demands larger vehicles, so manufacturers seek ways to reduce mass without sacrificing space. Read more
