Manufacturing Better Online Awareness

The long-term effort to revitalize manufacturing and boost the industry image has spread to the Web. The recently launched “Manufacturing is Cool” website encourages student from grades K-12 to be original thinkers, and features need-to-know information and videos for students, parents, and teachers to get a better understanding of the industry.

The kid-friendly website, funded by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Foundation (SME-EF) and its partners and sponsors, features information about manufacturing engineering careers, and students can also learn about getting involved in different educational initiatives, such as the PRIME program and the Gateway Academy. Scholarship information can also be found on the site.

Students can find out what seasoned experts have to say about their line of work by viewing videos that chronicle different careers and creative jobs. They can also access www.CareerMe.org, which highlights stories about young professionals in advanced manufacturing positions, and the path that led them to their jobs.

Chuck Temple, an artist and illustrator, explains how he has learned to use the tools of the engineering tools to produce his artistic creations:

“The explosion of technology and advanced manufacturing processes [is] evolving faster than it can be learned and applied,” Bart A. Aslin, CEO, SME Education Foundation said in the website announcement. “We designed the Manufacturing is Cool website to inspire, prepare and support young people for careers in advanced manufacturing without patronizing them. We’re giving them access to real-world people, jobs and technologies, all critical to them finding their place in a global economy.”

For the latest updates, can check out the foundation’s Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn pages.
