Sustainability Spotlight: Schneider Electric, Philips, and Suntech are Among Those Recognized With Gigaton Awards

Presented by the Carbon War Room, along with the Gigaton Throwdown and the World Climate Summit, the Gigaton Awards honor businesses that inspire gigaton-scale change by making measurable carbon reductions and taking quantifiable steps toward sustainability. Awards are given across five sectors: Consumer Discretionary, Consumer Staples, Telecommunications, Industrials, and Utilities.

Schneider Electric received the Gigaton Award for ‘Outstanding Business Leadership in Action’ in the Industrial category for its outstanding efforts to shrink carbon usage. Their solutions focus on two key areas for addressing this challenge — in addition to offering products, systems, and services that promote energy efficiency, their solutions put emphasis on improving the energy infrastructure through the use of environmental friendly installations, achieved through a range of solutions developed to advance the “Smart Grid.”

Other recipients of Gigaton Award winners include:

Consumer Discretionary

Tesco plc, UK — for its work on supply chain emission reduction and Knowledge Hub showcasing pilots of carbon reduction plans and training

Consumer Staples

Philips, Netherlands – for its EcoDesign process – identifying environmental impact in terms of energy efficiency, hazardous substances, take-back, recycling, weight and lifetime reliability

Swisscom, Switzerland — for its portfolio of green ICT products and services – supporting a more sustainable work and lifestyle for its customers

Centrica, UK – for its ‘energy in a low carbon world program’ – enabling consumers to generate their own low carbon energy and energy efficiency

The special Gigaton Prize was awarded to Suntech, the company that has grown the renewables energy sector, while at the same time, growing a profitable business.

A total of twenty-five companies were nominated for awards. To learn more about the Gitaton Awards, visit
