Light Friday: Personal Attributes that Can Cost You a Promotion

Plus: Curiously Shaped Anomaly on the Sea Floor and What the Moon Looks Like from Space.

Ocean Exploration Uncovers…Millennium Falcon?
Swedish salvaging team Ocean Explorer spends most of its time looking for wrecks containing expensive alcohol along the Baltic Sea. On dives in June, the team found century-old champagne, cognac and, possibly, a vessel capable of making the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs.

Sonar images taken on June 19 reveal a curiously shaped anomaly at the bottom of the Sea of Bothnia that reminds many of Han Solo’s Millennium Falcon. The images aren’t clear enough to determine what the object is, and theories suggest it could be a flooded archaeological site or the remnants of a downed aircraft or sunken ship. Enough curious people, many of whom hope the object has an interstellar origin, have donated money to Ocean Explorer that the group plans to dive to investigate the object closer up.

Expedition leader Peter Lindberg told CNET that the object, which is 60 meters across, is unlike anything he’s seen in 18 years of dives. Lindberg speculated that the object “might be a ‘new’ Stonehenge” at the bottom of the sea.

Superficial Things that Can Cost You a Promotion
Wondering why you haven’t received a bump in title or made it into the corner office yet? Maybe it’s because of a generally superficial thing that has little to no bearing whatsoever on your work performance.

In a recent study from CareerBuilder.com, employers nationwide shared some personal attributes that would make an employee less appealing for a promotion. Among the attributes:

  • Piercings (37 percent);
  • Bad breath (34 percent);
  • Visible tattoo (31 percent);
  • Wrinkled clothes (31 percent);
  • Messy hair (29 percent);
  • Dresses too casually (28 percent);
  • Too much perfume or cologne (26 percent);
  • Too much makeup (22 percent);
  • Chewed fingernails (10 percent); and
  • Too suntanned (4 percent).

Another recent CareerBuilder survey determined that being perceived as a hoarder can also cost workers a promotion. Approximately 28 percent of employers surveyed said they are less likely to promote someone who has a disorganized or messy workspace, and, even if an employee is actually working on multiple projects with positive results, 38 percent of employers said workplace clutter negatively affected their perception of that employee.

Simultaneous Sunsets and Moonsets
On July 31, Ron Garan, an Expedition 28 astronaut aboard the International Space Station (ISS), looked out his window and saw a simultaneous sunset and moonset, which looks like this:

Because the ISS orbits Earth every 90 minutes, the crew experiences this about 16 times a day.

Cheers.
