On April 22, 2011, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly observed International Mother Earth Day with a debate on the theme of “Harmony With Nature.” The UN organized the program in response to the General Assembly’s Resolution 65/164 passed in December 2010. That resolution called for dialogue “to inform the on-going preparations for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development to be held in Rio de Janeiro in 2012 (Rio+20).” Read more


GE Appliances & Lighting is the first full-line appliance manufacturer in the U.S. to adopt a foam-blowing agent, known as cyclopentane, to significantly reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the insulating process. Using cyclopentane in the manufacturing of its top-freezer refrigerators in the Decatur plant is expected to reduce the facility’s GHG emissions from the foam-blowing process by an astounding 99 percent. This reduction is so large that it will reduce the overall emissions for the entire plant by 80%. Read more
