Sustainability Spotlight: Top 50 Green Power Organizations

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has named the national top 50 green power partners using the most renewable electricity. The Green Power Partnership’s top purchasers use more than 12 billion kilowatt-hours of green power annually, equivalent to the annual carbon dioxide emissions from the electricity use of more than 1 million average American homes.

The top 10 on the list are Intel Corporation, Kohl’s Department Stores, Whole Foods Market, City of Houston, Dell Inc., Johnson & Johnson, Cisco Systems, Inc., commonwealth of Pennsylvania, U.S. Air Force, and the city of Dallas. Of those, Kohl’s, Whole Foods Market, and Dell also hold the status of purchasing 100% green power. In fact, many organizations participating in the Green Power Partnership, from small mom and pop shops to large financial institutions qualify as 100% Green Power Purchasers. The combined green power purchases of these organizations amounts to nearly 6 billion kilowatt-hours of green power annually, which is the equivalent amount of electricity needed to power more than 500,000 average American households each year.

Green power is generated from renewable resources such as solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, biogas, and low-impact hydropower. Green power resources produce electricity with an environmental profile superior to conventional power technologies and produce no net increase to greenhouse gas emissions.

EPA’s Green Power Partnership works with more than 1,200 partner organizations to voluntarily purchase green power to reduce the environmental impacts of conventional electricity use.
