Burning Question

What, if anything, have we learned from attempts to address/resolve the disastrous BP oil spill on either a government or corporate level? Let us know in the comments section below.

Also, we know many of our engineering readers might have their own ideas for capping the gusher and ensuring a similar disaster does not happen again. If you think you have a solution for stopping the flow of oil or containing the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, propose your idea at the Deepwater Horizon Response Web site.

You can’t wait for the federal government to take care of all problems. If you are looking for a helping hand – check the end of your arm first. Then roll up your sleeves and get to work.

Corporate self interest is not a sufficient driver to prevent stupid management mistakes. The losses in oil into the sea that now cannot be sold alone swamp the savings BP gained by cutting corners on safety. The damages done that BP will certainly have to pay for are 150 times the cost of preventing this accident. Nobody knows what the total costs will be and how much will be left for taxpayers to cover. Less government is not the answer to these issues – there must be government regulators doing their jobs and insisting that companies follow prudent procedures when attempting to exploit public resources. If the blowout preventer had been properly tested, properly repaired, and properly equipped, this spill would have lasted for mere minutes, not months.
