Should Christmas gifts be exchanged in the workplace?

I have no problem of gifts being exchanged in the workplace for Christmas any more than I have to gifts being given for a person’s birthday.
Christmas parties (or Hanukkah parties) should not be mandatory for employees in any shape or form.
As far as offending people goes: I get offended when a company does not recognize Christmas.
I am also not offended when one recognizes Hanukkah.

I think gift exchange is good as long as it is completely voluntary. I personally plan on passing out small trinkets to my co-workers.

It all depends on your Company. A small personal group might enjoy exchanging gifts but, a large group might have some employees already taxed out with other obligations outside of work that makes exchanging gifts another added stress and expense.

We have the Dirty Santa type of gift exchange, where you don’t give to a specific person. That works better in the long run, as when working for the Government there are specific rules on gift giving. When done in a party session and no one is singled out, it is OK. The price levels are kept low as well, to keep someone from getting a high-priced gift and someone else getting a cheap one.

I work for the Federal Government and we have to follow the Ethics Rules regarding gifts. Basically, we don’t give presents to each other, but we do bring in cookies, cakes, etc. to share over the Holidays. In the Government it is illegal to give gifts “up the chain” i.e. to your Supervisors, Managers.

No. its costly and not the proper place to exchange gifts. Christmas gifts are for family and really close friends only.

I just gave small gifts to the 3 other people in my office this morning. Small gifts – chocolate – under 15 dollars for all three together. This is my first Christmas here. I knew they all celebrated Christmas. I didn’t know they shun it at work though – I feel very upset because I was promptly told that we don’t do that here by 2/3 people. I was just trying to be nice, it’s a small office, I didn’t think it was a big deal. People need to chill out and make an effort to be happier.

I suppose there are a few aspects to the question at hand:
1) Mass obligation — Assuming that the gift-giver didn’t get something for everyone, should *any* gifts be exchanged during the holiday season?
2) Hallmarkization — As the argument goes, gift giving in the workplace further encourages the commercialization of what was once considered a religious holiday.
3) Political correctness — Then there is the word “Christmas.” Not everyone celebrates it. To the point that some are offended by it. Increasingly more companies are banning Christmas decorations in their workplace for fear of offending other faiths.
Any of these, or your own reasons, can be addressed in this section.
